A macro shot of my older poker dice from the 1950s, taken for my Macro Mondays group, “Board game pieces” theme (dice were accepted).

This is probably one of the last photos I will ever take with my trusty Micro–Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. I bought it in March 2008 and it served me well for a solid 13–year stint and a slew of assorted photographs, not all of them macros, far from it!

Now, however, with the advent of mirrorless and the Z mount, it is time to move on. I have already pre–ordered a copy of the new 105mm f/2.8 S that has just been announced by Nikon, and I wil soon put my old friend to auction on eBay, in the hope of finding a new home and a new owner who will appreciate it as much as I have over all those years together.

This is also the first time I use the new geared head that I purchased recently, a Benro GD3WH (a mouthful!) which I thought would serve me better for architectural shots than tha Leofoto panoramic head I have been using these past few months. We will see. The Benro seems to work fine. Of course, it is a lot bulkier and almost double the weight, but it does allow for much more precise adjustments.

Originally painted sky blue, this is a genuine World War I steel helmet from the French army. It has been in the family on my mother’s side since then.

For this 1:1 macro shot, I used my new Micro–Nikkor 85mm f/2.8 PC–E tilt–shift and macro lens. Natively, it can only achieve 1:2, but in this case, I added a Fotodiox Pro extension tube to reach life size. I used it because it is also a tilt–shift lens and I tilted it almost all the way to get all of what I wanted in focus.

Not very original, I’ll admit: after doing cufflinks last week for the “Pairs” theme, I’m doing cufflinks again (albeit different ones) this week for “Circles”.

S.T. Dupont of Paris gold and onyx cufflinks from the late 1980s. Camicissima cotton shirt for background (a different one as well!).

Single exposure. I wanted some depth of field and some bokeh, and I wanted the sharp area to follow the orientation of the shirt sleeve, so I used my newly–acquired Micro–Nikkor 85mm f/2.8 tilt–shift lens: I rotated it about 40 degrees left to place the plane of focus where I wanted it, then tilted the lens almost 7 degrees to achieve the amount of depth of field I thought was needed. Even though it is labeled “Micro–Nikkor”, that lens can only achieve a 1:2 reproduction ratio natively, and so I had to use a 45–mm Fotodiox Pro extension tube too.

Strobist and technical: One Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a Profoto light stand in lateral position to camera left, 2 meters from subject and 1 meter above it, firing horizontally at 1/8 and ⅔ power through a Phottix Pro 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser. Large white card reflector to camera right.

Strobe set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7 hot shoe, manual mode. Gitzo GT3543 XLS tripod with Arca–Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Nikon Z7 camera body, Micro–Nikkor 85mm f/2.8 PC–E tilt–shift lens, manual focus. FTZ adapter and Fotodiox Pro 45–mm extension tube.

I have owned a Danbo for quite awhile now but i have only ever done one shot with it. My friend set up a tumblr (cheek it out Here if you want) and put a couple of shots on there with Danbo's, kinda inspired me to do one.

A tilted lens

1:1 macro shot of a detail of my workhorse lens for architecture, the 19mm f/4 tilt-shift. I never realized the relief was so high... nor so dirty! It’s a shame, as I clean the lens thoroughly (or so did I think) after every shooting...
