A sculpture in Zilker Park, near the Barton Spring Pool. The plaque says:
"Philosophers' Rock, or 'Bedi's Rock', was the name given to a shelf of limestone that once rose out of the glittering water at the edge of Barton Springs. It was here, on hot summer days, that the naturalist Roy Bedichek and the chronicler and folklorist J. Frank Dobie sat in the sun and talked for hours about everything from classic works of literature to tall tales of lost Spanish treasure. Their great friend, the historian Walter Prescott Webb, was not a swimmer, but he would often join in the talk.
These three - Dobie, Bedichek, and Webb - strove to create a vibrant and distinctive intellectual climate in Texas, and their influence reached far beyond the state. This monument has been erected to celebrate their friendship, their enlightened spirit, and their love for Barton Springs."
I think I would have liked to hang around and listen to them. I certainly love that sculpture. Bedichek's the one with the book to the left, Webb's the man to the right. Dobie is the man in the center.

My sense is that these two elderly gentlemen were both born in the small fishing village of Cetara situated on the Amalfi Coast of Italy and have been lifelong friends. And... I am betting they have been together talking like this almost every day of their adult life.
Below is a photo of Cetara, a delightfully picturesque small fishing village.

Had no time to shoot anything "intentional" so let me present my favorite model who's always there on the weekends.
This guy has a generally positive outlook in life. Especally after a couple platefuls. I wish the goddamn glass was not in the frame, but by the time I moved it the subject changed his expression from "Yeah, life's like that" to "What the hell are you doing?".
Tucked them in bed and watched "2012". It has slightly less BS than "The day after tomorrow", but the obligatory Holly wood "love line" is too importunate. When the Governator (Mr. Schwarzennegger) reads his "all's well" speech, the lead character (John Cusak) says "Don't believe him, the guy's a professional actor, he reads from the script!". That's the only truth in the entire movie.

Panamarenko ( 1940 Antwerp – 2019 Brakel )
To describe Panamarenko with the single term ‘artist’, detracts from his abilities. He should be called an inventor as well, an engineer, a technician, a mathematician, a philosopher and a visionary. He has conducted exceptional research into space, movement, energy and gravity. His work is therefore a combination of artistic and technological experiment. From the 1970s, Panamarenko has been building his scale models of numerous imaginary vehicles, airplanes, balloons or helicopters in every possible original-surprising form. They are variations on the dream of flying from the mythological figure Icarus. Whether these things can really fly is part of the mystery and appeal. His body of works is so unique and innovative, that it is impossible to frame it within a certain style or movement. His miraculous world is centered between pure science, technical genius and childish enthusiasm. He said: “In fact, I only make toys, because that is the real art: the poetry of a toy. What others call real art is too much like art, that's the problem. After all, art is the only vehicle that one should try to stay out of the sphere of influence at all times, not to do what the power or those in power say: that is the essence of art. ” These birds can actually walk around.

Enkel de term ‘kunstenaar’ op Panamarenko plakken, doet afbreuk aan zijn kunnen. Noem hem gerust ook uitvinder, ingenieur, technicus, wiskundige, filosoof en visionair. Hij heeft uitzonderlijk onderzoek gedaan naar ruimte, beweging, energie en gravitatie. Zijn werk is dan ook een combinatie van artistiek en technologisch experiment. Vanaf de jaren 70 bouwt Panamarenko aan zijn schaalmodellen van talrijke imaginaire voertuigen, vliegtuigen, ballonnen of helikopters in alle mogelijke origineel-verrassende vormen. Het zijn varianten op de droom van het vliegen van de mythologische figuur Icarus. Of deze tuigen echt kunnen vliegen, is een deel van het mysterie en de aantrekkingskracht. Zijn oeuvre is zó uniek en innovatief, dat het onmogelijk is er een bepaalde stijl of stroming op te plakken. Zijn wondere wereld houdt het midden tussen pure wetenschap, technisch vernuft en kinderlijk enthousiasme. Hij zei: “ Ik maak in feite alleen maar speelgoed, want dat is de echte kunst: de poëzie van een stuk speelgoed. Wat anderen de echte kunst noemen, lijkt te veel op kunst, dat is het probleem. De kunst is namelijk het enige vehikel waarvan men zou moeten proberen te allen tijde uit de invloedssfeer te blijven, niet te doen wat de macht of de machthebbers zeggen: dat is het wezenlijke aan kunst.” Deze vogels kunnen effectief rondstappen.

Coller uniquement le terme «artiste» sur Panamarenko est préjudiciable à ses capacités. N'hésitez pas à l'appeler inventeur, ingénieur, technicien, mathématicien, philosophe et visionnaire. Il a mené des recherches exceptionnelles sur l'espace, le mouvement, l'énergie et la gravité. Son travail est donc une combinaison d'expériences artistiques et technologiques. À partir des années 1970, Panamarenko a construit ses modèles réduits de nombreux véhicules imaginaires, avions, ballons ou hélicoptères sous toutes formes originales et surprenantes. Ce sont des variations sur le rêve de voler de la figure mythologique Icare. Que ces appareils puissent vraiment voler fait partie du mystère et de l'attrait. Son œuvre est si unique et innovante qu'il est impossible d'y mettre un certain style ou mouvement. Son monde merveilleux est un croisement entre la science pure, l'ingéniosité technique et l'enthousiasme enfantin. Il a dit: «En fait, je ne fais que des jouets, car c'est ça le vrai art: la poésie d'un jouet. Ce que d'autres appellent le véritable art ressemble trop à l'art, c'est le problème. Après tout, l'art est le seul véhicule que l'on devrait essayer de rester en dehors de la sphère d'influence à tout moment, de ne pas faire ce que le pouvoir ou ceux qui détiennent le pouvoir: c'est l'essence de l'art. " Ces oiseaux peuvent se déplacer effectivement.

Souvent considéré comme l'inventeur de la démocratie, il fait partie des Sept Sages de la Grèce. Il naît à Athènes dans une famille eupatride. Il se rend populaire lors d’une guerre contre la cité voisine de Mégare, gagnée sur ses conseils. Il joue ensuite un rôle politique important, et promulgue une série de réformes accroissant considérablement le rôle de la classe populaire dans la politique athénienne, réformes qui portent son nom.
