Lichfield is our best known three-spired cathedral, and one I have visited many times over the years (both for business and pleasure).
The cathedral suffered more than most during the Civil War when the Close was besieged (twice) and the central spire shot down (the aftermath of which is memorably conjured in one of Kempe's windows). As a result of this (and the soft red sandstone) the cathedral has been heavily restored and nearly all the furnishings are Victorian, but there are some notable tombs and monuments, and every time I come here I seem to notice more medieval survivals of some kind in various corners.
Pierre-Félix Guattari (April 30, 1930 – August 29, 1992) was a French militant, institutional psychotherapist and philosopher, a founder of both schizoanalysis and ecosophy. Guattari is best known for his intellectual collaborations with Gilles Deleuze, most notably Anti-Oedipus (1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980).
Widely considered one of ancient Rome's greatest orators, Cicero understood the importance of having one's financial house in order. A quote attributed to him greets visitors in my front office.

The 1950s also saw the development of Philosophers' Rock. Roy Bedicheck, a naturalist, J. Frank Dobie, a folklorist, and Walter Prescott Webb, a historian, would gather on a flat rock near the diving board and talk about an infinite number of things. John Henry Faulk, Walter Bremond, and Skinny Pryor were known to drop in. A statue by Santa Fe artist Glenna Goodacre at the main entrance to Barton Springs honors these men. "If I have to fight for this country, I will not fight for the flag, or the American 'way of life', or democracy, or private enterprise or for any other abstractions, which seem cold as kraut to me. But I will fight to the last ditch for Barton Creek, Boggy Creek, cedar-covered limestone hills, blazing star and bluebonnets, golden- cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos... This love of your native land is basic." - Roy Bedicheck.
A sculpture in Zilker Park, near the Barton Spring Pool. The plaque says:
"Philosophers' Rock, or 'Bedi's Rock', was the name given to a shelf of limestone that once rose out of the glittering water at the edge of Barton Springs. It was here, on hot summer days, that the naturalist Roy Bedichek and the chronicler and folklorist J. Frank Dobie sat in the sun and talked for hours about everything from classic works of literature to tall tales of lost Spanish treasure. Their great friend, the historian Walter Prescott Webb, was not a swimmer, but he would often join in the talk.
These three - Dobie, Bedichek, and Webb - strove to create a vibrant and distinctive intellectual climate in Texas, and their influence reached far beyond the state. This monument has been erected to celebrate their friendship, their enlightened spirit, and their love for Barton Springs."
I think I would have liked to hang around and listen to them. I certainly love that sculpture. Bedichek's the one with the book to the left, Webb's the man to the right. Dobie is the man in the center.

"The Role of Axioms in Mathematics" was presented by UC Berkeley student Kenny Easwaran, at the second session of the day.
My sense is that these two elderly gentlemen were both born in the small fishing village of Cetara situated on the Amalfi Coast of Italy and have been lifelong friends. And... I am betting they have been together talking like this almost every day of their adult life.
