Going through old family photos, I came across this one my wife took in 1978. That’s me, apparently exhibiting my Napoleon phase. Why, I don’t know, having no recollection of this at all.

The camera around my neck was a 35mm Yashica viewfinder. This was just a few months before I bought my first SLR, the Pentax K-1000, which I still have, still love, and occasionally still use.

Phase Two Team by Greater Manchester Police

Around 1980, Greater Manchester Police command realised the force needed a new control room that could service the entire region.

Plans were drawn up to build the new structure on the same site of the force’s recently acquired headquarters in Stretford.

Pictured are some of the officers and staff who worked on the project.

The new building – said at the time to be the most advanced in Europe – was finally completed in 1986 and officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in April of that year.

It was often referred to as Phase 2 because it was the second stage of development on the site.

The building continued to serve the force until it finally closed its doors in late 2019.
