In 2023 I'm using as many of my half-frame cameras as I can. This was taken with the new Kodak Ektar 35H half frame camera. Stylistically it's based on the Kodak Instamatic cameras from the 1960s and 70s.
The film is Kentmere ISO 100 developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 15mins at 20 degrees.

Study of the day:
On s'assoit sur une dune de sable. On ne voit rien. On n'entend rien.
One sits on a sand dune. One sees nothing. One hears nothing. And yet something shines in silence (...) What embellishes the desert is that it hides a well somewhere.

regarde bien petit
© Jacques Brel - 1968
regarde bien petit, regarde bien
regarde bien petit, regarde bien....

Hi everyone!
Vincent Van Gogh is my personal hero. I admire his courage and persistence to become the artist he envisioned himself to be. However troubled his life was, he kept on painting and drawing. In many ways his life relates to mine. The quote I picked for today is a good one. It reveals...
For the entire post go to www.danielnovotnyart.com/?p=1995.
Hummer was a brand of trucks and SUVs, first marketed in 1992 when AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee. In 1998, General Motors (GM) purchased the brand name and marketed three vehicles: the original Hummer H1, based on the Humvee; and the H2 and H3 models that were based on smaller, civilian-market GM platforms.
The original Hummers were first designed and built by AM General Corporation, which was formerly AMC-Jeep's General Products division, in its Mishawaka, Indiana, assembly plant. The vehicles were created under a contract for the United States armed forces. The first model, the Humvee, was built in a variety of military-based equipment and versions. The US$1.2 billion contract won by AM General in 1983 was to produce 55,000 Humvees by 1985, which was later increased to 15,000 additional units.
AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of the Humvee as far back as the late 1980s. Having the same structure and most mechanical components, the civilian Hummers were finished in automotive gloss paint, adding passenger car enhancements such as air conditioning, sound insulation, upgraded upholstery, stereo systems, wood trim, and convenience packages. The civilian model began in part because of the persistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw an Army convoy while filming a movie.
In 1990, two matching white Humvees were driven from London to Beijing over the rough roads of central Soviet Union. The Hummers made the trip with ease, for they were built to drive on off-road terrain. The highlights of this journey were broadcast in the United States on CNN. This publicity would pale in comparison to the attention that the Humvee received for its service in Gulf War Operation: Desert Storm, the following year. Also, a privately-owned Humvee was modified into the first Snow-Vee, including the addition of caterpillar tracks, a new rear compartment and a new engine. This vehicle was designed for use in and just below the Arctic Circle, and the Antarctic.
In 1992, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle to the public under the brand name "Hummer".
The Hummer H1 is a civilian off-road vehicle based on the M998 Humvee, which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006, and was the first of what became the Hummer line. It was initially known only as the "Hummer"; however, in 1999 in a joint venture between General Motors and AM General, GM began marketing the Hummer H2, which was built on the Chevrolet Tahoe chassis. It was at this point that the original Hummer was given the H1 designation. For collectors, the most desirable model is the H1 Alpha, produced in the final model year of 2006. It had the most powerful engine and the best fuel mileage of the H1 vehicles. Overall, the H1 was a very limited production vehicle.
"Originally designed strictly for military use the four-wheel-drive utility vehicle was released to the civilian market due to popular demand. Boasting 16 inches of ground clearance as well as super-aggressive approach and departure angles, the Humvee could clamber over a 22-inch high obstacle, handle a 60 percent grade and wade through up to 30 inches of water."
Originally released in the civilian market in 1992, the Hummer H1 owed its birth to the popularity of photos from Operation Desert Storm and the enthusiastic campaign from actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, who owns several variants of Hummer vehicles. AM General announced that 2006 would be the last model year for the Hummer H1, with production winding down in June 2006 due to a new emission law for diesel engine vehicles, which took effect in 2007.
The Hummer H1 has three common variants: a convertible-like soft top, a four-door hard top Sport Utility Truck and an Alpha Wagon body version. Other less known variants include a two-door pickup truck, most commonly seen in the military sporting Anti-Air turrets and other launchers, or used as troop and cargo transports, and a four-door slantback, which shares the same body style of the Humvee employed by the U.S. Military. The convertible/soft top and the station wagon versions were the last ones available in the mass market. The two door and four door pickup versions are only available in fleet livery.
Currently, five engine types and three automatic transmission types can be found in Hummer H1s. The common engine/automatic transmission combinations are:
6.2 L GM Diesel V8/GM TH400/3L80 3-speed
6.5 L GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
5.7 L Vortec 5700 gasoline V8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
6.5 L turbo GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
6.6 L turbo Duramax LLY V8 turbo Diesel/Allison 1000 5-speed (model year 2006)
The Hummer H1 shares some common driveline parts with its HMMWV brethren. Items like brakes, axles, frame and major body panels (hood, tailgate and quarter panels) are identical between the HMMWV and the Hummer H1. All Hummer H1s and HMMWVs come off the same assembly line, and then civilian H1s get painted and finished in a separate building across the parking lot.
Hummer H1s are unique in the way they handle off road[citation needed], and in their interior arrangement. Passenger and highway comfort are sacrificed for maximum mobility compared to civilian SUVs, with features much more radical than the original Jeep[citation needed], though they do share a similarly cut simple grille opening. They are inherently very stable, thanks to their wide track. They can ford 30 inches (76 cm) of water and climb a 22-inch step. Their stock ground clearance of 16 inches (41 cm) is made possible by tucking driveline components inside a channel in the central space between the left and right seats. They have high approach/departure angles of 72/37.5 degrees. Most H1s are equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire air pressure at the push of a button, since lower tire pressures are more suited for off road, and higher tire pressures are desirable on-road.
Hummer H1s have many unusual features. They use inboard brakes. They have portal gears, allowing the drivetrain's half shafts to be up high for greater clearance. The radiator is up high, sloping back over the engine on a forward hinged hood. The air intake is mounted high, enabling fording waist-level water. Rather than using simple runflat tires, magnesium-aluminum alloy or rubber inserts are an optional feature for runflat ability. A chemical agent resistant coating, or CARC, is available only on the military version.
The "Alpha" was an extensively re-engineered H1 that was equipped with GM's Duramax Diesel and 5-speed Allison transmission. The previous version of the H1 with the 6.5L "Optimizer" turbo-diesel engine suffered from sluggish sales; lack of power was one of the reasons for customer resistance. In 2002, AM General CEO Jim Armour took the idea of repowering the H1 to Bob Lutz and the GM Luxury Vehicle committee. GM soon approved the use of their Duramax/Allison powertrain for the H1. This would support the continuation of the H1 as the grandparent of the Hummer portfolio; it would also allow AM General to give the truck a much needed dose of updating in terms of power, torque, refinement and the ability to meet 2004 heavy duty EPA emissions requirements.
The update program commenced in late 2002 with production launch slated to be fall of 2004. The engineering team chose the engine variant out of the GMT560 truck (the C4500) because it packaged better into the H1 engine bay; however, 23 engine component changes were required and the team had to do a 2.0 inch body lift to accommodate the taller engine and its turbo housing (a prior 0.5 inch lift had been done for MY96 to accommodate the turbo on the 6.5L engine). The GMT560 engine calibration was used with minimal modification; engine output was 300 hp and 520 lb·ft of torque. Due to the Duramax engine being equipped with cooled exhaust gas recirculation and an internal engine oil cooler, the team had to deal with a 40 percent heat rejection increase to engine coolant. However, they were unable to increase the size of the cooling pack between the air-lift brackets that protrude from the hood. This meant dramatically re-engineering the fan system by putting the fan directly under the coolpack and driving it through a special gearbox directly off the crankshaft damper pulley. Several other cooling system modifications were required to assist with cold starting from −30 °F .
Other major modifications included the use of special high-strength steel in the chassis frame, a more powerful steering gear; quieter axle differentials, redesign of the geared hubs to use quieter helical gears, new induction, exhaust and electrical power systems; and re-engineering of the fuel supply and filtration system.
Off road the much higher torque of the engine, combined with a lower gearing ratio (about 44.5 to 1 in low lock), made the truck much more powerful. The Duramax engine delivered more torque at lower engine speeds than the 6.5L, so the team actually had to calibrate the torque management to protect certain driveline parts. This new torque profile coupled with centralized tire inflation and AM General's new interior resulted in the complete re-engineering of everything except the carryover body made of aluminum beams and panels.
Production launch was early in 2005, and continued until production ceased in mid-2006. All vehicles built during this time are classified as model year 2006 (10th digit in VIN is a 6.)
The program was cancelled May 12, 2006 because GM decided to withdraw technical and financial support for future engineering and recertification.
In the original 1992 production run, the price of the basic open-top was $40,500 while a fully loaded wagon with all options was $54,700.
In 2006, the suggested retail price was $129,399.00 for the open-top; the wagon was $140,796.00, H1 Alpha was priced at $150,975.00. ~Wiki

this tree across the street has the most persistent leaves...i wonder if they'll ever fall?
i see them as a gentle reminder to be unwavering in my determination. especially in winter when all i want to do is curl up with a warm mug of something delicious and read....
"Time don't have nothing
To do with how high you can
Time don't got nothing
To do with how high you can count
Time and life
Life and time"

Persistence and Patience in Prayer
Ecclesiastes 7:8; Romans 12:12; 1 Corinthians 15:58
It is not enough to begin to pray, nor to pray aright; nor is it enough to continue for a time to pray—but we must patiently, believingly continue in prayer until we obtain an answer. And further, we have not only to continue in prayer unto the end, but we have also to believe that God does hear us and will answer our prayers. Most frequently we fail in not continuing in prayer until the blessing is obtained, and in not expecting the blessing.
GEORGE MÜLLER
Elliot Ritzema and Elizabeth Vince, eds., 300 Quotations for Preachers from the Modern Church (Pastorum Series; Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2013).
Hispaniola, a Caribbean island smack dab in the hurricane belt, is known as the hurricane shredder. That's because the island has five distinct mountain ranges, with Pico Duarte, at 10,128 ft (3,087 meters) above sea level, as the highest peak in the Antilles. These mountains literally reach into passing hurricanes and disrupt the system, not only slowing the system, but literally shearing and destabilizing the directional winds with their immovable presence.
The mountains of western North Carolina affect weather in much the same way... this tree from along the Craggy Pinnacle trail at Craggy Gardens gives evidence of that. I've watched from the top of Craggy Pinnacle as cold air from the west collides with warm air from the east... clouds form, swirl, and move off directly overhead of these high ridges. These mountains often divert harsh colder weather north into Virginia, which is partly why we enjoy overall temperate weather where I live in Durham, some 200 miles east of here. Often, when it snows in Durham (which isn't very often) it has already snowed further south in Atlanta, Georgia. Those frontal systems push under the Appalachian Chain, meet warm air from off the coast, and push back up into North Carolina. These kinds of frontal collisions produce wind, and in the case of where this photo was taken, that wind is quite incessant and often high speed... that, along with cold temperatures and low clouds, can create a pretty harsh environment.
Patience is a necessity for any nature photographer... here, even the most patient can become quite frustrated waiting out the combination of "just right" light and wind. This tree, however, exhibits the ultimate in patience. The trail follows the ridge for a good ways, but from about where this tree is, the ridge rises sharply with many exposed rocks dominating that rise. That's obviously of no matter to this tree as it wraps its roots around the rocks to firmly establish its place on the mountain... it persists against the harsh elements and won't be bullied by the wind as it protects the understory beneath it.
Craggy Gardens, near milepost 375 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is so named because of the proliferation of beautiful Catawba rhododendron that grow there... but, as with many things, there are stories within stories that shouldn't be missed. Be sure to see the notes here.
In my garden I have a patch of hens and chicks. They're nestled amongst these stones at the base of an oak stump. When the tree fell the Virginia Creeper that covered it fell with it, but soon made a comeback. A week ago, I pulled it out and the roots ran so deep that I ended up dislodging my entire hens and chick family. I replanted them, and transplanted the Virginia Creeper. Today I see that it has made a comeback. Persistant little thing, isn't it? :D
Charleston Rd., Mountain View
Takes some patience and persistence, but the bird can be found. Out with John and Tom today, but I got to claim the honors on the first find, for a change!
Several of the trees hold their leaves for a long time...the Japanese maple and the oaks. Soon even these will let go.

Study of the day:
"... The production of motive power is due, ... not to an actual consumption of calories, but to its transport from a warm body to a cold body, ie to restore its balance, balance assumed broken for any reason whatsoever ... it takes place not only for steam engines, but for all fire machines, ie for any machine which engine is the caloric. The heat can obviously be a movement source only under the changes in volume or form it causes to the bodies, these changes are not due to a constant temperature, but due to alternatings between heats and colds, yet to heat any substance one must have a warmer body , and to cool it, we need a colder body. ... "
( Sadi Carnot - 1824 - Thoughts about the motive power of fire and about the machineries able to develop this power. )

Persistence Works, 21 Brown Street, Sheffield S1 2BS
1998-2001.
By Feilden Clegg Bradley.
A purpose-built fine art and crafts studio for Yorkshire ArtSpace Society.
The building is by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, and as their website observes:
Persistence Works was the UK’s first purpose-built fine art and crafts studio complex. Located in Sheffield, it provides a permanent base for 89 artists. The client was Yorkshire ArtSpace, a charitable organisation supporting artists and craftspeople by providing studio space at affordable rents, while offering a wide range of visual arts events and activities to the community.
The project was part funded from the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England and the European Regional Development Fund, although the intention was that this low maintenance, low energy facility would provide sufficient studio space to enable it to become financially independent.
The site is a prominent one, situated at the inter-section between the cultural and industrial developments within Sheffield’s old cutlery industries’ quarter. The function of the building is a synthesis of the two aspects of the cultural and industrial sectors; a synthesis which is also reflected in its form.
The building demonstrates innovation in our use of materials. It explores the use of concrete and the design and method of construction were carefully researched to achieve the highest quality affordable finish. The cast in situ concrete is contrasted with lightweight, frameless glass elements. The building incorporates a number of artists’ works, with the primary collaboration a “floating wall” to the main frontage.

Yorkshire ArtSpace is a project established to provide studio space for artists which opened in October 2001 at the Persistence Works building in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The Yorkshire ArtSpace Society, originally established in Sheffield in 1977 by a group of artists, aimed to provide accessible studio space. At that time, the Society was based at Washington Works, but only on a short term lease. Persistence Works was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. It is the UK’s first purpose built studio complex for artists and craftspeople. The project has created studio space for sixty eight practicing artists and craftspeople in addition to exhibition, project, education and office spaces, The building won an RIBA Yorkshire White Rose award and a Civic Trust Award Commendation. It was also a finalist in the Prime Ministers’ Better Public Building Awards in 2002.

Edwards's pheasant (Lophura edwardsi) is found in the rain forests of Viet Nam and sometimes called the Vietnamese pheasant. It is considered Critically Endangered. The number of wild birds is estimated 50-249, but there has not been a confirmed sighting since 2000. Ex-situ conservation by zoos may prove critical to the persistence of this species. Taken at the Dan Moran Aviary in the OKC Zoo. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
