It's been a cold spring. The last children of winter cling to us. And although I enjoy the winds of change, I see in that persistence something heroic and beautiful.

Plumbeous Ibis was a bird that I really wanted to get a shot of in flight during our Pantanal trip and persistence paid off.

If you think you have a hard life... Think again!

When you stand on the rim of the Grand Canyon, you stand on the precipice of time. The persistence of the river shows in the strata of the rocks - each layer another epoch through which the river patiently ran its course. It makes me feel small - the same feeling I get standing on the edge of the ocean or looking into the endless night sky.
The Canyon teaches us the same lesson that Herman Hess found in trees. The River is persistent, single-minded. Day after day, year after year, century after century, the river pursues its single purpose. It wants to be nothing other than what it is.
When we achieve that. We are home. That is happiness.
(see Herman Hess' "Trees: Reflections & Poems")
Anyway, all waxing poetic aside. the Grand Canyon is pretty awesome! Pictures do it no justice... But it's fun to try.
Happy shooting!

This tree root stood near the middle of a spring fed stream. I can only imagine that during a dry period a small sapling emerged and took root. Beating the odds it grew to maturity and now even though just a stump remains it is "Persistence even in death."

No, I haven't flipped it.....they were climbing upwards, or at least one of them, on the back of a bench...
Macro April-Sigma 105
A Note: Some of the interpretations of this mini scene (however true they may be!) are far from what I had in mind. I was just fascinated how one bug can carry the other on its back and still climb the vertical back of the bench without even "breaking a sweat"! You try doing this.....:)
Trees at a shoreline. Lake nearby Berlin / Germany. Berlin has many lakes. This one we visited for the first time during a short visit to Berlin. I was impressed by the persistence of those trees that still formed leaves and grew despite their unusual way to grow. It is an unspectacular image, but this place created some nice childhood memories. I spend as a child many weekends at and on such a lake where my parents had set up a tent at a permanent campsite for a couple of summer seasons.
Every morning you wake up is a blessing. Best part is the opportunity not to let yesterday's mistakes and problems hold you down as you start a new day.
This shot marked the beginning of Spring for me - my second most favorite season. Getting this right hand-held with Sony's big zoom was pretty challenging - I was still waking up and standing on a steep slope. It took around 10 shots before I could get decent focus and composition even with the good IS and optics. For me, long shots like this have several challenges, some of which never really diminish with practice - save for some persistence and luck.
NS 1635, a high hood SD40-2, works the riverfront in Alton, IL, and a pleasant March afternoon.
I initially saw this train heading north thru Wood River earlier in the day, and kept with it as much as I could until this shot was taken in the evening. He took quite a while working in the yard in Alton, and ended up getting a new crew late in the afternoon to continue work. This is the first time I've been able to snag a train in this area. I almost went home, too, before this guy came to the riverfront.
The years have certainly left their mark on this millions of years old seashore cliff. However - unlike many other things in our world - storms, winters, and ice ages have only made it smoother.

Have a great week everyone!

This tiny 1 day old Hyena cub was very keen to explore its surroundings and tried several times to escape from mom, even though he could not yet use his back legs properly. Mom just kept picking him up and gently returning him to the den.
Stay tuned for more....

There are names that go through the generations with calm persistence. Names that heal a person just for taking them, and names that destroy. Names that travel, names that bring you home, names that you only mutter in the deep waters of your sleep...
-Louise Erdrich from the novel Four Souls
Long past the season to grow and show off its beauty,
the Rose bush keeps offering up a new blossom, one at
a time, in a show of strength, even of stubbornness, like myself! And of Persistence.
That's my kind of Rose!

Upornost
Kamen je ostao kamen. Život je pronašao put.
Today was my 4th trip to a local area where Cedar Waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) usually are seen December through Jaunuary feeding on Toyon berries; The first 3 trips I saw nothing, but today, BINGO!; I get a rush everytime I see a flock of these waxwings blitz into a toyon tree and devour berries;
Patience met precision at Loch Lomond Marina today. This Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) demonstrated exactly why it's a master of the shoreline, landing a lightning-fast strike to secure a mid-morning meal. The sharp focus in its golden eye says it all. Against the calm blue of the bay, it was a perfect display of nature’s hunter-gatherer at work.
Some persistence paid off today as I pushed the boundaries of "lunch" to catch Wheeling 96 leaving Toledo several times. Early cloud problems gave way to better skies blowing in from the west and my final shot of them just past Pearson Park in Oregon was the real winner for the day showing off the "matched" 4 unit consist. TENACITY and PERSISTENCE in achieving goals
Always go ahead, set new goals each time and fulfill them. You can fall nine times, but you have to get up ten and get stronger and step higher. The key to success is clear planning and tactics. Ability to think, count and see two steps ahead of their opponents. Use new ideas and scientific advances for your own purposes. Reasonable audacity, the ability to take risks and courage in actions are the qualities of a real Emperor.
Alexander, in his desire to follow the heroic paradigm, naturally placed great value on honor, and with it to the virtues of self-control and self-denial. He always went forward, having a great goal and fulfilling it without fear, inspiring many people, changing history and the map of the earth.

Persistence of Life - Achalm View
A dusk landscape taken from the slope of Achalm hill, looking down towards the city of Reutlingen, Germany. The main subject is a solitary, old tree trunk that has been cut but is still pushing new growth, providing a strong metaphorical element. The soft pastel colors of the fading sun provide a beautiful backdrop to the composition.
Beneath the quiet hush of the forest floor, where the light barely filters through the canopy, a moment of life unfolds in secret. With wings like velvet painted in iridescent blue, the Archduke butterfly descends—not to bask in sunlight, but to feast on decay.
A forgotten fruit, shriveled and blackened, becomes a treasure trove of nutrients. The butterfly unrolls its slender proboscis and drinks deeply, drawing sustenance from what the forest leaves behind. There is elegance in this moment—where beauty meets the cycle of life and death, where even rot plays a vital role.
Here, in the silence, the Archduke reigns—not by grandeur or glory, but by the quiet persistence of life in the shadows.
Goldfinch - Carduelis Carduelis
On closer inspection male goldfinches can often be distinguished by a larger, darker red mask that extends just behind the eye. The shoulder feathers are black whereas they are brown on the hen.In females, the red face does not extend past the eye. The ivory-coloured bill is long and pointed, and the tail is forked. Goldfinches in breeding condition have a white bill, with a greyish or blackish mark at the tip for the rest of the year. Juveniles have a plain head and a greyer back but are unmistakable due to the yellow wing stripe. Birds in central Asia (caniceps group) have a plain grey head behind the red face, lacking the black and white head pattern of European and western Asian birds. Adults moult after the breeding season with some individuals beginning in July and others not completing their moult until November. After moult birds appear less colourful, until the tips of the newly grown feathers wear away.
The goldfinch is native to Europe, North Africa, and western and central Asia. It is found in open, partially wooded lowlands and is a resident in the milder west of its range, but migrates from colder regions. It will also make local movements, even in the west, to escape bad weather. It has been introduced to many areas of the world. It was introduced to Canada, United States, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, the Falkland Islands, Uruguay, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, in the 19th century, and their populations quickly increased and their range expanded greatly. They now occur from Brisbane to the Eyre Peninsula in Australia, and throughout New Zealand.
Because of the thistle seeds it eats, in Christian symbolism the goldfinch is associated with Christ's Passion and his crown of thorns. The goldfinch, appearing in pictures of the Madonna and Christ child, represents the foreknowledge Jesus and Mary had of the Crucifixion. Examples include the Madonna del cardellino or Madonna of the Goldfinch, painted by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael in about 1505–6, in which John the Baptist offers the goldfinch to Christ in warning of his future. In Barocci's Holy Family a goldfinch is held in the hand of John the Baptist who holds it high out of reach of an interested cat. In Cima da Conegliano's Madonna and Child, a goldfinch flutters in the hand of the Christ child. It is also an emblem of endurance, fruitfulness, and persistence. Because it symbolizes the Passion, the goldfinch is considered a "saviour" bird and may be pictured with the common fly (which represents sin and disease).
The goldfinch is also associated with Saint Jerome and appears in some depictions of him.

I wanna feel something
I wanna feel something
I drink to feel something
I sleep and feel nothing
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Verse 2: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
I want some good loving
I want some good loving
Want it to mean something
Set this old heart buzzing
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Chorus: SYML, SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
No, I don't need a heavenly home
A place beyond the clouds with everyone we've ever known
It doesn't matter where we go
If you were born to run
I was made to run with you
I was made for you

I need some church, darling
I need some church, darling
I am a false prophet
I must confess, darling
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Verse 4: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence, SYML]
Our love's a great mountain
Our love's a great mountain
Climbed up and fell down it
We lived to laugh about it
Well, baby, you and I survived
Maybe God thanks you that I'm alive
[Chorus: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence, SYML]
No, I don't need a heavenly home
A place beyond the clouds with everyone we've ever known
It doesn't matter where we go
If you were born to run
I was made to run with you
I was made for you
I was made for you
You
[Verse 5: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
I wanna feel something
I want some good loving
Take me to church, darling
Our love's a great mountain
Baby, after all this time
Maybe home is you and I've arrived
After every missed attempt, the Amazon Kingfisher flew back to its branch, shook off the water, and reset its focus. It made its catch on the eighth dive I saw, though it may have been hunting long before I arrived. Reserva Natural Marashá, Santa Rosa de Yavarí, Peru.
Life Finds A Way. Nature possesses an extraordinary capacity for persistence, often manifesting in the most unforgiving of landscapes. When a seed settles into the narrowest fracture of a pavement or a roadside curb, it initiates a silent, monumental struggle against a world of man-made barriers. Despite the absence of rich soil and the constant threat of pedestrian traffic or harsh pollution, these botanical pioneers draw upon hidden reservoirs of nutrients and water trapped beneath the asphalt. As the seedling germinates and pushes its stem upward, it exerts a subtle yet relentless force, turning the rigidity of concrete into a mere hurdle. This act of growth is not just a biological imperative; it is a profound testament to the tenacity of life, proving that even within a stifling urban grey, organic vitality will invariably find a way to reclaim the space, pushing through the cold stone to reach for the light.
Shirley poppy (Papaver rhoeas cultivar) or a similar ornamental poppy that has self-seeded in an urban environment. Poppies are well-known for their ability to colonise disturbed ground, which is why they are often found growing in cracks in pavement, alongside roads, or on wasteland
When you zoom in like this you can see the advantages of a camera over a phone. I suppose I should have stopped the car and got out to get closer - - - Oh well next time.
