It was really windy and this Monarch hung on this flower as the wind blew and bent the flowers it to and fro.. I admired them for their tenacity! Somehow they know they have to get this nectar to make the long journey that lies ahead of them.
Haven't see quote as many Monarchs this year as years past but I know many people are aware of their plight and doing everything they can to help save these beautiful butterflies... ; )

My first and second days were a bust with the sky - but on the third day, I was given a beautiful sky to compliment this fantastic landscape
Upper Packrat Trail, Tilden Nature Area, Berkeley, CA.
This Brown Creeper was doggedly picking apart the thick layers of spiderweb and proteinaceous spider silk with persistence, and eventually was able to snatch the crown jewel behind the structure.
While this may seem like a tender moment between this bull and cow bison, he was in the mood and she definitely was not! He kept nudging her with his head while she generally ignored him. He was persistent (and obnoxious!) enough to where she got up and tried to walk away. When she did he followed closely, continuing his advances. She grew tired of him and laid back down. We watched for a good 10 to 15 minutes admiring both of their strong wills - his trying and her denying!

Every year, for the past four yrs, I have tried to grow sunflowers. The workers around the house, the lawn guy and others, would destroy my flowers, only a small half open flower would survive. This year I planted the Mammoth Sunflower. It is over 5' ft tall, reaching up to the sky. In a few days the flower will bloom. Persistence does pay off.

I had just about given up hope of getting a decent shot of this one when it finally paused on this fallen leaf.
dragon characters. Mine being an Astral dragon, his being a Mirage dragon that kept repeatedly breaking into the Astral realm just to get near her and her who kept kicking him out till his persistence finally wore her down.

A persistent fern manages to find a way to survive. It is growing on a Victorian steam engine parked at the train station in Betys-y-Coed, Wales.
A combination of persistence and dumb luck led me to stumble into a Weller crew loading coal at Consol at the crack of dawn this morning. We had expected to see something load here on Saturday, but found no empties at the mine or at nearby Weller Yard. I decided to make an extended side trip to the mine on my way back north just in time to see them bringing their first set of cars under the loadout. This is actually the start of the second half of the train, which they began loading three hours later - I had much better light for this half since it was closer to mid-day. Although still called Consol by the railroad, this mine is currently operated by Coronado Coal. It is at the end of track on the NS Buchanan Branch, and at present is the busiest mine on this scenic coal country branch. Those trees on the hillside are looking good for this early in the month!
With the cold patch we had in fall, many leaves just dried out before coloring. But many of the dried leaves clung to the trees and stayed through winter, especially Japanese maples. At the moment of this capture, the snow was coming down fast - on me, my camera and the trees and I had to increase the speed to 1/1250 to "freeze" the snow flakes.

I knew there was an owl that frequented this hole but every time I went there, he was not visible. Finally, today in the bitter cold and blowing snow, he was hanging out where I could see him.
Eastern Screech Owls are highly nocturnal, and therefore are rarely seen hunting and feeding. The owls swoop down from their perch to capture their prey; they rarely hover while hunting and have been known to cache uneaten prey items in tree cavities. These owls are primarily solitary except during the breeding season.
Mother Nature is so amazing! Plants will find a way to survive almost anywhere, especially weeds :) I observed these plucky survivors basking in the morning sun in Granada, Spain.

After squealing to mum for a good length of time the persistence of this little one payed off when it was able to suckle. Baby elephants suckle from their mother for six months and then are gradually weened off her milk over the next year and a half. Our guide advised that this one was likely the best part of two years old so getting a feed for this one was probably getting harder.

PERSISTENCE...Spinning deer hair is an acquired skill that is learned through persistence. This Morrish Mouse is an example of persistence. 1, 2, 3, and on the 4th try I was satisfied with an acceptable result. Life is like this tie. Persistence can and will make all the difference in the world to the outcome.

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins. Not through strength, but through persistence.” Taken at The Pinnacles Youth Park.
My typical attempts to capture a belted kingfisher go like this:
A Kingfisher rattles away in the distance. I follow the sound and see the bird perched above the water. I take two steps and off it flies, only to land a bit farther away. I follow, get semi-close, raise my camera and off it goes again. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. Until I give up.
Not this time.
Last week we stayed in a condo that overlooked the Arkansas River. I opened the sliding door to go out onto the deck to listen and marvel at the beautiful stream right below me when I heard a familiar rattle. A female kingfisher was sitting on the deck post of the condo next door! I grabbed my camera, snuck back onto the deck and snapped a few quick shots in bad light before she flew off. This was as close as I had ever been to one. She had obviously staked a claim to the condo deck posts and used them to spot fish in the river below. Now, would I see her again?
I left the sliding door cracked so I could listen better and sure enough I heard her again. Over the next few days this went on until I could get her in the kind of light that worked for a decent image. Finally!

The years have certainly left their mark on this millions of years old seashore cliff. However - unlike many other things in our world - storms, winters, and ice ages have only made it smoother.

The beauty of erosion.
Seashore cliff far up north. Come into being millions of years ago, shaped and smoothened by waves, storms and ice ages ever since.

It's been a cold spring. The last children of winter cling to us. And although I enjoy the winds of change, I see in that persistence something heroic and beautiful.

I wanna feel something
I wanna feel something
I drink to feel something
I sleep and feel nothing
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Verse 2: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
I want some good loving
I want some good loving
Want it to mean something
Set this old heart buzzing
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Chorus: SYML, SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
No, I don't need a heavenly home
A place beyond the clouds with everyone we've ever known
It doesn't matter where we go
If you were born to run
I was made to run with you
I was made for you

[Verse 3: SYML, SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
I need some church, darling
I need some church, darling
I am a false prophet
I must confess, darling
Maybe that's where you come in
Maybe that's where you and I begin
[Verse 4: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence, SYML]
Our love's a great mountain
Our love's a great mountain
Climbed up and fell down it
We lived to laugh about it
Well, baby, you and I survived
Maybe God thanks you that I'm alive
[Chorus: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence, SYML]
No, I don't need a heavenly home
A place beyond the clouds with everyone we've ever known
It doesn't matter where we go
If you were born to run
I was made to run with you
I was made for you
I was made for you
You
[Verse 5: SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]
I wanna feel something
I want some good loving
Take me to church, darling
Our love's a great mountain
Baby, after all this time
Maybe home is you and I've arrived
If you think you have a hard life... Think again!
