tonight, january 19, 2007, is the opening night of "a thousand cranes", play written by kathryn miller schultz and performed by the hawaii theatre for youth at tenney theatre.
the play is based on the true story of sadako sasaki, a little girl who survived the horrific atomic bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki. she was 2 years old when the bombs were dropped on Japan and, at the age of 11, she became ill and was diagnosed with leukemia, the "atomic bomb disease". sadako was told by a friend that if she folded a thousand paper cranes, the gods would grant her one wish. "a thousand cranes" is sadako's story, a story of perserverence, determination and hope.
the paper crane has become recognized worldwide as a symbol of peace.
sadako sasaki died on october 25, 1955 at the age of 12 of radiation induced leukemia.
i encourage everyone who will be in honolulu over the next three weekends to go and see this wonderful play performed by the honolulu theatre for youth. the 1:30pm performance on february 10th will have an asl sign language interpreter as well.

The Kulluk, which grounded on Sitkalidak Island near Kodiak on New Year's Eve, was refloated late January 6 and taken to Kiliuda Bay for repairs and a survey. The Kulluk is being kept in place by the anchor handing ship Aiviq and the tugboats Alert, Corbin Foss, Lauren Foss and Ocean Wave. Supporting the effort are the ships Nanuq, Perserverence, Warrior and the Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley.

With all the wintry weather Dallas has been seeing, I was a little surprised to find some buds coming out on one of the Sweetgum trees during a walk with Murphy. Also surprising, with all the fallen "gumballs" littering the ground, was this lone pod hanging on, one of the few pods that hadn't dropped yet. I couldn't resist the metaphor and the melancholy sky.

Shot @ Coonor Nilgiris.. I have seen this bird in most of my trips up the hills but never got a shot that I can be happy about. this time after many many years of perserverence I am satisfied with the few frames that I can feel happy about.
Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr. welcomed to the Senate chamber the people behind the "Life Within the Journey," a photo exhibit showing the strength and determined perserverence of children battling cancer. Pictured with Senator Kennedy, who is a survivor of childhood cancer, are Erynn Fray, a volunteer with Life Within the Journey, Jeanna Shepard, the organization's photographer, Jeff Salguero, who serves on the Board of Directors, Liz Salguero, a Co-Founder of Life Within the Journey, and Carlos Salguero, their son, who is himself a child cancer survivor. (June 1, 2017)
Take me as I am. Subtract an attitude and substitute it with a mask molded perfectly to my distorted face. Add a dash of danger with a pinch of perserverence and you've almost got a girl worth fighting for. She'd be brave, beautiful, and bold. She'd be everything you hoped for, the two of you would intertwine like vines on an old abandoned home, still standing through the years of neglect. Your body would compliment hers, and your laughs would ring a harmony so clear, so perfect that people would stop their stories just to hear a second of yours. Smiles nearly identical in shine but one is lacking a sense of sincerity. Personality was stolen when the love was granted, yet love was not love for it was conditional. Changes must be made so that the ticking time will go on in peace. Without these changes, life is flawed and futile. Without an eraser, the first marks were permanent. You're stuck with the original. A rough draft.
You're stuck with me.
A visit to the Launceston Steam Railway, a two-foot gauge line in Cornwall using the standard-gauge trackbed of the LSWR "Withered Arm" towards Bude. It runs for around two miles from Launceston to Newmills and is entirely wonderful! The quaint collection of rustic buildings around Launceston station contains an excellent collection of vintage motorcycles, cars and commercials as well as some Railwayana displays. Well worth a visit.

"Gaman" -Perserverence. Not only a motto for Japanese Americans or those who practice Zen Buddhism, but also for all ethnicities that have persevered through the racism and struggle to assimilate to American culture to bring us to where we are today.

...if you have faith as small as a mustard seed...nothing will be impossible for you.- Matthew 17:20-21, The Bible
Location: The end of Punggol, Singapore
Over the weekend I armed myself with the camera and decided to take a second trip to the small beach at Punggol. There was a passing shower, but after which the sky became extremely clear and the rays of the sun started to beat down relentlessly. Because of the glaring conditions, I was squinting as I combed the beach. It was an endless stretch of sand and rocks.
It was quiet and beautiful, but I needed to look for something more interesting. Then I spotted a little salt-encrusted seedling growing in an almost non-existent gap between several small boulders. It was surprisingly resilient for its size. This tiny plant seemed to remind me of how much more I could accomplish, if only I had just a little bit of Faith.
Yipee!!! Another 2 pounds gone this week! THANK YOU for your continued support for me on this long journey. I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere! I pray I will have the perserverence to make it through another successful week.
I had to resurrect an old photo this week, as I didn't get around to taking a "focus" photo for my weekly challenge. This week, I want to work on getting adequate sleep. And tonight is a write-off :o) but I will start tomorrow. There is nothing I need to do around here that can't wait until another time. I don't have a lot of alone time after Emma goes to sleep before it's time for me to retire, so I usually end up staying up VERY late, just cause I'm doing "stuff" that I can't any other time of day. But I'm also getting very run down. There's nothing that can't wait for another time. I need to stick to a regular bedtime so that my body has time to rest and rejuvinate at night. This old photo of Emma was the closest thing I could find to represent this week's challenge :o)
I'll keep checking in to read your words of encouragement...they really do help. THANK YOU.
And Goodnight!!! ;)
Still plugging away. This week, my focus is perserverence. I find that there are days when I have the attitude that it's okay to take a day "off", it won't hurt anything. And while I want to stay real and not totally cut off any particular food completely from my life, I do need to keep in mind that every morsel I put into my mouth does "count". So while it's okay to have, say, a cookie, I'm going to try not to let myself have 3 cookies, AND a Mcdonalds meal, AND an iced cappacino, AND pizza...all on the same day! (which by the way, I did this week).
This is the longest I've lasted on a weight-loss program in a LONG time. I have you to thank. Knowing I'm accountable to my flickr friends each week DOES make a big difference. THANK YOU for your support, from the bottom of my heart :o)
This was from an expired roll of Tri-X 320 I shot in the Holga a couple months back and just recently got around to developing. It was taken at almost the same place as this one on the way to Ruby Falls just outside of Unicoi State Park in Northern Georgia.
In other news - spring has hit Georgia. Yes, it is a little bit early this year, but some of the trees are already in bloom. I think they all might be regretting their decision to bloom this weekend though when it drops back down into the 20s at night. Even still, I have been thinking about possible photographs that I want to make this spring. Does anyone else ever get like that? I see a place/thing/person and I think, "there is a photograph to be made here...I just can't figure out what it is yet..." There are several places around Atlanta that I have wanted to photograph, and have tried to photograph, for a while and just haven't quite gotten them right yet. I guess it's just a lesson in patience and perserverence...and hope of photographs to come.
Despite the fact that it is the end of January, I found this poor fellow struggling through the cold and rain. It's perseverence was something almost beautiful.
Blue Sky Alpacas Sportweight yarn
Originally a natural color, dyed with Grape and Cherry Kool-Aid
Size 2 Needles
Picque Rib Pattern from Barbara Abbey's The Complete Book of Knitting
These socks weren't the most fun project to knit, mostly because I got somewhat bored with the pattern and because I was very anxious about leaving the correct amount of yarn to make my first attempt at an afterthought heel. Pulling them on, I knew that my perserverence paid off because they are DELICIOUS. So soft and warm, they will be perfect for chilly days.
As I mentioned, I decided to attempt an afterthought heel with these. Although this technique is easy, I didn't particularly like it. It fits well enough, but I jsut prefer a heel flap.
i can't really describe this any more really. some might think he's hard to find, but he's not. he's just cradled, taking in his surroundings. loved and protected. isn't he lucky?

Ein Hod, Haifa, Bat El Shmueli, an Ethiopian woman who has been here for 18 years and currently works closely with the new Ethiopian community as a supervisor of the organization Ethiopian National Project, in Haifa. She strives to build bridges between the Israeli and Ethiopian culture. She lives with her husband, a famous Israeli Sepahardic artist, in Ein Hod with their two children and her niece who was orphaned in Ethiopia. She has an incredible story of perserverence from her home in Ethiopia coming to Israel and being separated fro her family when sent to boarding school, finding a mentor who helped her believe in herself, went through the army in a high up position and finally realizing how rich her Ethiopian culture is and wanting to impart that to all the new immigrants. Gave the info to Michele hopefully she interviewed her.
