Central wholesale markets, established by local governments under the Wholesale Market Law, sell fresh foods indispensable to out daily life such as fish, vegetables, fruit, meat and flowers. It is difficult to store perishable foods for a long period as the spoil easily. In addition, the production of perishables is greatly affected by natural conditions such as the weather, so the price is subject to greater fluctuation than other goods. So the wholesale market, standing between producers and consumers, promotes the smooth distribution of perishables and contributes to stabilization of diet through the fair and speedy transactions between wholesalers and jobbers in the clean and functional facilities.

Role The Central Wholesale Market Law of 1923 has laid the foundation of the wholesale market system in Japan. The Law was revised in 1971 and the present Wholesale Market Law was newly promulgated to cope with the succeeding social changes.

The present system of wholesale market in Japan has two features: (1) Local governments found and manage their central wholesale markets. (2) Prices are fixed on the basis of auction regardless of volume of transaction. This is an unique system around the world; the law restricts transactions in the markets to maintain impartiality.

Before central wholesale markets were established, although auction had been held partially in vegetable markets, most prices had been negotiated in secret between sellers and buyers. It sometimes caused unfair transactions and placed producers and consumers under disadvantages.

The principle of public auction established by the Central Wholesale Market Law had a marked effect on distribution of perishable foods: fair prices and proper transactions are ensured. Thus, thanks to the central wholesale market, producers and consumers have become able to supply or consume perishable foods without anxiety.

I run a group home, so shopping and cooking for a lot of people is what I do, this is one weeks worth of groceries, $350 is about average for a week.

Staples I always start the week with are:

8 gallons of milk

5 dozen eggs

8 loaves of bread

2 dozen bagels

assorted cereals, pastas

Fresh Fruits and veggies

Fresh meats and cheeses

Cleaning products and detergents

Paper products

We may not use it all in a week, but we start each week fully stocked, I make a menu before I shop, so I make a list from the menu then pick up staples to keep us well stocked. Part of our regs say we have to have 1 week non-perishable and 3 days perishable on hand at all times.

I went to the Hair Clinic for a hair set this morning. Since we've been out of town for a couple of days, we needed some perishable items from Publix. I noticed several containers while there. Outside the store, there's three recycle containers: paper bags, plastic bags, foam egg cartons/foam trays. Inside the store, there's a machine to receive bills from loose coins.

I pushed my grocery cart up the hill to my car and put the bags in the trunk to get a little exercise.

I bought some Light Progresso soups--about 70 or 80 calories per cup. I ate some Italian Style Meatball for lunch. It was tasty.

For dinner we are meeting James, Jim's business partner, and his wife at the Catfish House in Adel. I'll have to look for something low-calorie on the menu. It's the first time I've met either of them. I've heard that James is going to Japan soon.

Urban Camo Ski Mask Project

These artworks are build from pieces of paper sourced mostly from the streets of Amsterdam. These bits and pieces are mixed up with torn screenprints, magazines and comicbooks. There is not much commentary for this picture and the ones which follow, so I will keep the text to the minimum and let you enjoy the pictures. After a long-ish drive down the hill after viewing the sunset point at Promthep Cape, (see previous pictures), my guide brought me to the head of a small lane running out from the parking lot at Rawai Beach. Go there, see fish market, he said. Conch, abalone and other assorted shell fish for sale in the fish market at Rawai beach in Phuket, Thailand. Don’t know about the fancy shells on the top shelf but the conch and other shellfish are definitely for use as food. Heck, these look so beautiful I wouldn’t have the heart to eat these suckers! Although I had no intention of buying fresh fish, upon reflection, I think it might have been a good idea, as Phuket is on Thailand's west coast, on the Andaman sea, and so the kinds of fish and crustaceans you can see in this market would be much different to what you see in say Bangkok or Koh Samui which are on the east coast of the country. Featured Program, Dada Ball

Thursday, February 25, 2016, 5:30 pm

Dadaists used paper, cardboard, and rugs to create costumes for their performances-which included poetry readings and dance pieces-at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. Perishable, deliberately ugly, and absurd, the outfits symbolized the artists’ anti-authoritarian spirit and their claim that “everything is Dada.” This ball fully embraces Dada’s assault on good taste and celebrates it with an evening of music, poetry, photography, refreshments, and more. Dada-inspired costumes are encouraged, but please note that oversized costumes and objects will not be allowed in the galleries. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Everything Is Dada. Generously sponsored by the Lydia Winston Malbin Fund.

The NBR K Class is a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The first batch (later LNER Class D26) was designed by Matthew Holmes in 1902 and had 6' 6" driving wheels for express passenger work. Three more batches (later LNER Classes D32/D33/D34) were designed by William P. Reid with 6' 0" driving wheels for mixed traffic work. This included perishable goods, such as fish from Mallaig and Aberdeen. They had inside cylinders and Stephenson valve gear. Later locomotives had superheaters.

Urban Camo Ski Mask Project

These artworks are build from pieces of paper sourced mostly from the streets of Amsterdam. These bits and pieces are mixed up with torn screenprints, magazines and comicbooks. They are glued in the shape of a ski mask forming an urban camouflage pattern. The eyes and mouthpieces are made of laser-etched and or laser-cut photo’s, comics and logo’s.

Ski masks to me are a symbol of the current struggles around the globe. The news is dominated by men wearing ski masks whether it be terrorists or the special forces battling them.

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich joined Taos Feeds Taos volunteers to help prepare food baskets for needy families this holiday season. Senator Heinrich, Ret. 1SG Francis Cordova, and National Guardsmen picked up non-perishable foods from the Taos Mesa Brewery--the facility hosting this year's Eighth Annual Food Drive and Benefit Show--and delivered them to the Taos U.S. Army National Guard Armory, where the baskets will be sorted and prepared for distribution to families. This year marks Taos Feeds Taos' 30th anniversary.
