The African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the Black-footed Penguin, is found on the south-western coast of Africa, living in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Because of their donkey-like braying call they were previously named Jackass Penguins. Since several species of South American penguins produce the same sound, the African species has been renamed African Penguin, as it is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa. The presence of the penguin gave name to the Penguin Islands.

Two colonies were established by penguins in the 1980s on the mainland near Cape Town, namely Boulders Beach near Simon's Town and Stony Point in Betty's Bay. Mainland colonies probably only became possible in recent times due to the reduction of predator numbers, although the Betty's Bay colony has been attacked by leopards. The only other mainland colony is in Namibia, but it is not known when this was established.

Boulders Beach is a tourist attraction, for the beach, swimming and the penguins. The penguins will allow people to approach them as close as a meter (three ft).

The closest relatives of the African Penguins are the Humboldt Penguin and Magellanic Penguins found in southern South America and the Galápagos Penguin found in the Pacific Ocean near the equator.

This photo was taken at a huge colony located on Right Whale Bay where many of the King Penguins were in varying stages of moulting. During moulting the birds can not go to sea. They stand near the stream/water to keep cool.

My first attempt to make a softie. I designed my own simple pattern and used lovely, huggable, fleece. Love the result. Made a grey penquin for my son.

Colby Armstrong jacks up Patrick Eaves, with a perfectly clean hit as he was playing the puck. Jason Spezza (aka Bitch Boy) and the rest of the Senators cry about it. Eaves goes off on the stretcher. Thankfully, he's not hurt too seriously (concussion).

Penguins Café™ has made some earth-friendly changes, switching to napkins, utensils and packaging that are made of either corn or potato starch and completely compostable. Roughly two trash bins of waste are picked up at the café by the Facilities Department for composting every day, furthering our mission of inspiring people to care for and protect our ocean planet.

Penguins Café™ has applied its environmental focus to its menu, as well. Produce, seafood and some meats and cheeses served at the café are now locally grown, harvested or caught.

Entrée salads and vegetarian options will soon be added to the menu. Stop by and try this new cuisine. The Penguins Café™ is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Don't shoot me flicker members..My Grand daughter loves Penguins so I photoshopped a piece together. And they are all my own photos..LoL

The penquin colony at Punta Tombo Argentina started an flurry of activity around 4:30 pm. Thousands of penguins all around started squawking and bellowing as if some mystical ritual had begun. It was a delightful cacophony.

March 2014

Is this Chinstrap penguin looking for a mate? I photographed six penguin species on this trip. Weather prevented us from visiting a chinstrap colony but we encountered a few nesting with other penguin species.
