Penguin Expedition at Jurong Bird Park
Occupying 1,630 square metres, Penguin Expedition is home to endearing penguins. The five species on exhibit are the Humboldt, the Rockhopper, the Macaroni, the Fairy and the majestic King Penguin.
The Penguin Expedition, with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, has a large pool set against a landscape of rocks, cliffs, nesting alcoves and burrows.
A special lighting system recreates the four seasons to enable the penguins to maintain their bio-rhythm. Visitors at the exhibit will be treated to a vast panoramic view of these fascinating birds ‘flying’ underwater through a specially constructed viewing gallery, which has a 30-metre long window. Catch these birds in action at their feeding times and they will certainly enthrall you.

I just got back from another stint in South Africa and while there I didn't have access to my computer... so I have a lot of pics to process and catch up on...
This pic is from my visit to Cape Town and my drive to Cape Point. Along the way is a small beach/cove that is famous for it's resident penguins. While heading along the roadway I almost missed the turnoff. Luckily I didn't and was treated to a close encounters of tuxedo wearing birds :-)

Oh lucky me. I was driving today and out of the corner of my eye I saw this penquin, just as you see above. Quick checked mirror, stopped, & backed up quickly. All to the amusement of some people parked nearby as I took my shots. The Gods were smiling on me. Everybody else too! :)
Scattered throughout Dundee are Sculptures of penquins, These were near thew Discovery and in a shop window. Much loved by local residents and by visitors, they are often used for charitable purposes and some of them have facebook pages. If you arrive by train one of the first things you see are some of the penquins

A signature of 21c Museum Hotels, a flock of "Green Penguin" sculptures by artist collective Cracking Art Group.
21c (twenty fist century) Museum Hotel in Bentonville opened in February 2013. It is a very moderne hotel building which doubles as an art museum open to the the public 24/7. The $28 million hotel/restaurant/meeting center/museum is 1 block from Bentonville's courthouse square and a 15 minute trail walk from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
Bentonville’s 21c is much like the flagship hotel - the 21c Hotel & Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. It was designed by the same architect, Deborah Berke & Partners of New York. The firm also designed the James Hotel (now the Saguaro) Scottsdale, Arizona in 2004.
The owners are Kentucky art collectors Laura Lee Brown and husband Steve Wilson. Ms. Brown, is the 72-year-old great-granddaughter of the founder of liquor company Brown-Forman, whose brands include Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort.Mr. Wilson, is a 65-year-old former public-relations officer for four Kentucky governors. The project was built in conjunction with the Walton family and the nonprofit Bentonville Revitalization Inc.
Emmanuel Gardinier was the opening general manager of the 21c Museum Hotel. Previously Gardinier was managing director for the Planters Inn in Charleston, S.C.
Art is everywhere at 21c. There are pieces in each of the rooms and suites. Art is found in the most unexpected of places, including the fitness center, which features the piece “Fat Batman” suspended from the ceiling.
Each 21c location features large penguin statues designed by Cracking Art Group of Italy throughout its property. A different color at each museum/hotel (green in Bentonville), the penguin is a staple for 21c. The penguin statues, which are “mysteriously” moved throughout the property, are one of only a few permanent art fixtures in the museum, which changes exhibitions every six months.

Atlantis Marine World’s year-round Penguin Pavilion provides an Atlantis-themed home to African penguins (Spheniscus demersus). The exhibit’s 800-square foot enclosure features representations of the ocean and beach, as well as burrows in the back that the penguins will use for nesting.
Visitors can view the penguins both above and below the water, and can even “pop in” through an observation bubble in the beach portion of the exhibit.
Native to Namibia and South Africa, African penguins – the first penguin species to be discovered by Europeans – have declined dramatically in the wild over the last century. In the early 1900s, the population stood at 1.5 million penguins; today, just over 179,000 remain.
The African penguins exhibited here were captive-bred in South Africa and imported illegally into the US. They arrived at Atlantis Marine World in April 2004, when the US Fish and Wildlife Service contacted the Aquarium about providing the penguins with a new home.
The African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the Black-footed Penguin, is found on the south-western coast of Africa, living in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth, South Africa, with the largest colony on Dyer Island, near Kleinbaai. Because of their donkey-like braying call they were previously named Jackass Penguins. Since several species of South American penguins produce the same sound, the African species has been renamed African Penguin, as it is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa.
Two colonies were established by penguins in the 1980s on the mainland near Cape Town at Boulders Beach near Simon's Town and Stony Point in Betty's Bay. Mainland colonies probably only became possible in recent times due to the reduction of predator numbers, although the Betty's Bay colony has been attacked by leopards. The only other mainland colony is in Namibia, but it is not known when this was established.
Boulders Beach is a tourist attraction, for the beach, swimming and the penguins. The penguins will allow people to approach them as close as a meter (three ft).

Spheniscus magellanicus
Magellanic Penguins are medium-sized penguins which grow to be 61-76 cm (24-30 in) tall and weigh between 2.7 kg and 6.5 kg (5.9-14.3 lbs), with the males being larger than the females and weight dropping while each parent nurtures its young.
Adults have black backs and white stomachs. There are two black bands between the head and the breast, with the lower band being in an inverted horseshoe shape. The head is black and has a broad white border running from behind the eye, around the black ear-coverts and chin, and joining on the throat. Chicks and juveniles are grey-blue on their backs, with a more faded grey-blue color on their chest. In the wild, Magellanic Penguins can live up to 25 years, while ages of 30 years have been reached in captivity.
Young birds usually have a blotched pattern on their feet, with this 'blotching' fading as they age. Older birds of over ten years usually have solid black feet.
Like the other species of penguins, the Magellanic Penguin has very rigid wings used to 'fly' under water.

African Penguins grow to 68–70 cm (26.7–27.5 in) tall and weigh between 2 and 5 kg (4.4 and 11 lb). They have a black stripe and black spots on the chest, the pattern of spots being unique for every penguin, like human fingerprints. They have pink glands above their eyes. The hotter the penguin gets, the more blood is sent to these glands so it may be cooled by the surrounding air, thus making the glands more pink. The males are larger than the females and have larger beaks, but their beaks are more pointed than those of the Humboldt. Their distinctive black and white colouring is a vital form of camouflage–white for underwater predators looking upwards and black for predators looking down onto the dark water.
African Penguins forage in the open sea, where they pursue fish such as pilchards and anchovies, and marine invertebrates such as squid.

Watch them interact on the exhibit’s rocks, then head below to the underwater viewing windows, where you get an up-close look at the birds swimming and socializing.
