The Galapagos penguin is quite diminutive. We saw several LATE in the afternoon around Sombrero Chino; in fact, the sun had already sunk. So, challenging even with the high ISO of my 7D, needless to say. It was in a tight little cove and the engine conked out on our zodiac. Luckily, it was a very calm cove so we easily fended off the lava shore, and the guide radioed another zodiac that pulled us back into the bay. Got that engine started again, and we made it back to the ship for dinner. Love that technology! Love those penguins.

Calgary Zoo Penguin Exhibit

Avian Island, Antarctica - 13 January 2013

A group (a waddle) of penguins rushed over to greet us, then stood in the road in front of our vehicle for a long time. Upon our return hours later, they were still in the same place. October 2011

The Penguins Walk Today!

One year ago today, the kings arrived at the Calgary Zoo! With this special day, we have a special announcement to make…

We have been waiting until the New Year to share this exciting news with you. The much anticipated Penguin Walk is here! After a series of practice sessions, our king penguins are ready to meet the public…closer than ever before!

Today, January 11, we are hosting a media event for our first ever Penguin Walk. The walk is held outside Penguin Plunge from 11:00am until 11:15am.

If you have some time today, please join in on this first of a kind Penguin Walk for the Calgary Zoo, something you won’t soon forget!

Meet king penguins Arthur, Asa, Ceasar, Diana, Grace, Hera, Solomon, and Tut as they waddle their walk.

Following the media launch today, the official walk will begin January 14 and run until the end of February each Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 11:00am until 11:15am.

We hope you see you here!

Penguins chilling out in their native environment

Emperor penguins, Cape Evans Antarctica, November 2011

Headed to Saint Louis for a weekend excursion with Jason, Jeremy, Kelly and Owen. We stayed with Kevin and Paige, played in their beer tasting bracket, went to the zoo and the Cahokia Mounds.

The zoo had a penguin exhibit! They had two sections; one for warmer weather penguins and one for colder weather penguins. They were SO cute. So sorry everyone, but there are a lot of penguin pictures. :)

These are King and Gentoo penguins in the indoor cold weather part of the exhibit.

I managed to get up close and personal with about 10 penguins earlier this year. Quite a few good shots, so I just picked one. This may well be the one that bit my girlfriend.
