The King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second largest species of penguin at about 11 to 16 kg (24 to 35 lb), second only to the Emperor Penguin. King Penguins eat small fish, mainly lanternfish, and squid and rely less than most Southern Ocean predators on krill and other crustaceans. On foraging trips they repeatedly dive to over 100 metres (330 ft), and have been recorded at depths greater than 300 metres

An King penguin watches me as I photograph him, Edinburgh Zoo.

Headed to Saint Louis for a weekend excursion with Jason, Jeremy, Kelly and Owen. We stayed with Kevin and Paige, played in their beer tasting bracket, went to the zoo and the Cahokia Mounds.

The zoo had a penguin exhibit! They had two sections; one for warmer weather penguins and one for colder weather penguins. They were SO cute. So sorry everyone, but there are a lot of penguin pictures. :)

These are King and Gentoo penguins in the indoor cold weather part of the exhibit.

I managed to get up close and personal with about 10 penguins earlier this year. Quite a few good shots, so I just picked one. This may well be the one that bit my girlfriend.

Edinburgh zoo is probably best known for its penguins. The first three king penguins arrived on a Christian Salvesen whaling expedition which docked in Leith in 1913.

Edinburgh Zoo was opened to the public on 22 July 1913 and is run by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Education is at the core of the zoo's activities. The zoo has won awards for the stimulating habitats it creates for the animals.
