SET 2 – HLT Remodel: 4-20-2023

Over at the far left side of the rear actionway, what was formerly the toy department is now a couple of vacant aisles, looking just a tad bit worse for wear. The endcap toppers are all askew, the pegboard graphics are peeling, and the taped-on remodel notices are canted. These aisles were getting prepared for removal so that the floor tile underneath could be replaced; notice how those old tiles are yellower in color when compared to the surrounding, brand new white tiles. It’s scenes like this that really make those old gondolas look, well, old, even if it wasn’t necessarily blatantly, or even marginally, noticeable before (case in point, see the aisles in the background, looking normal as ever – and, in my opinion, not aged).

my husband made me this peg board. he put two peg boards together and slid the bottom one down a little so that the pegs would slant upward. if anyone needs detailed instructions, just let me know!

Throughout our lives, we search for home. My husband's job brought us to a new town and it was time to search again. We didn't want to buy a house others had fixed up to match their dreams. We wanted one we could invest our creativity and energy in.

While our Realtor was talking on the phone, I thumbed through the blue Multiple Listings book on the desk in front of me and there it was! We bought our 3-story 1895 Victorian fixer-upper... and the adventure began.

We pulled up the kitchen linoleum and discovered rotted joists and studs had been eaten by termites. All three floors had to be rewired and replumbed. We'd wake up in the middle of the night suddenly realizing how we could fish a wire or run a pipe. We stripped, burned, scraped, painted and wallpapered. We laid stone for a wildflower wall and built a Koi pond.

As part of my Master's Degree, I designed and built new kitchen cabinets with a pull-out pastry island, created stoneware dishes, containers and wall hangings. Our 212 renovation was the subject of numerous articles and honors. And it was home for our kids during their early school years.

Previously I added pegboard to a canvas frame to create a jewelry board. Now it's being re-purposed into a bulletin board.

The underside of the pegboard. The wires were taken out of some network cable. You can see the undersides of many of the LEDs, which are held in place by a dab of hot glue. This photo also shows the bottom side of two of the circuit nodes, with their wires sticking out through the holes.

The multi-tool was put up in sort of a ceremonial "I HAVE PEGBOARD" moment.

The reason why EK Success Brands makes the large pegboard with the parrot pattern, seeing as how this creature had about 3 pegs clearance on all sides.

Transitioning back to the rear wall again for a split second, we see a slight work in progress here: you don’t normally see exposed pieces of wood in store interiors like that, haha! Aside from that, though, this view looks pretty much complete, with the fresh uplighting, wall paint, pegboard graphics, and all.

The student pulls out each peg from the pegboard and places the peg into the container on the right (film canisters in the bottom of an egg carton).

This weekend, we started settling into our new art studio and bringing it to life, with the help of our maker art friends. Sarah moved boxes with art supplies, Mark helped set up the pegboards, Howard filled them with tools, Natalina decorated the shed, Jean set up an art bench and Phyllis treated us to fresh fruit.

It felt like an old-fashioned community barn raising! I am very lucky to have such a supportive group of friends, and am really grateful for all their hard work and creative touches.

Our new backyard makerspace is a wooden 12’ x 10’ Tuff Shed, made to order, opening into our patio. It will be a great place to make art with friends, prepare for my classes and work on new ‘pataphysical projects.

I’m so happy to finally have an open space to create in, after decades of clutter in my overcrowded office. Can’t wait to start making cool things in it!
