Peerless Pool is one of the most beautiful outdoor pool complex in the region. Give it a shot. $8 to enter Saratoga State Park, $2 to enter the pool. And it's 5 mins away from Saratoga Springs: make it a hike+pool+dinner day!

Ghost town visits in Nov. 2017.

Peerless, Utah

According to ghosttowns.com this is a 'true ghost' town. We couldn't see anything.

[In fact, this town's name doesn't even register on many maps! The gps coordinates are: 39.69314166666666, -110.9087000000000.] There is no one really out here. Half paved roads, a little spooky!!

The website says this about the history of Peerless:

"Around 1917 the Peerless coal company bought this sight and the town of Peerless soon sprang up. The population was around 300. The mine closed in 1955 and the town soon died."

The website entry is from 1996, so we are here 20 years later! We did see a bike trail (this is along Spring Canyon Road). When I looked up the bike trail, I don't find much information. I found a hiking trail listed. Not sure if they are connected.

**Note in many ghost towns there are signs that say no trespassing and/or these lands have been bought by an individual or company, so it's better not to get caught roaming on them.

Cardiff boxing hero "Peerless" Jim Driscoll wore these during his career in the early decades of the 20th. century.

Driscoll, a member of the Cardiff-Irish community, was as well-known for his charitable works as his top-class boxing career. These two worlds collided when he turned down a World title fight because of a prior engagement to raise money for the nuns of Nazareth House, Cardiff.

If I could go back in time and meet just one non-family member, it would be him.

Shelsley Walsh Classic Nostalgia - Sunday 19th July 2015

Clearly, Peerless was once a thriving town. It has several grain elevators. A big restaurant. Churches. A good size school. The problem is that when I was there most of those things seemed empty--abandoned, even. The church was overgrown. The school was clearly empty at a time when school should still have been in session. One of the elevators is falling down (though the others seem used). The big restaurant was listed for sale and seemed totally devoid of life. And there were far more abandoned homes than ones that are lived in. Peerless was very very quiet. I had to wonder what happened here, that so many people left? This place used to have plenty of amenities. But when I was there the only activity I saw was a tumbleweed blowing across main street.

"Peerless was originally a development of the Great Northern Railroad. It appears that Peerless once went by the name of Tande or Battleson, but because of the popularity of a local beer the name was changed to Peerless...Dutch Henry's Bar...is a namesake of an outlaw who roamed these parts in the late 1800s. A display of photos on the walls tells quite a bit about the history of the surrounding area. The original town, settled in 1914, was a few miles away. Like many other places in northeast Montana, the laying of the railroad bed required the town to be moved to the railroad." -travelmt.com

The Peerless was designed by the Austin Motor Company in Birmingham to help the British Army police troubled areas. Constructed at Cleveland in Ohio the chassis had already been used in several lorries from World War 1. As well as being used abroad the Peerless saw service in Ireland in 1921 and in food convoy escorts around London during the General Strike in 1926.

Sandstones in the Cambrian of Colorado, USA.

The dark-colored unit in the middle and upper parts of the photo is the Peerless Formation, which here consists of dark reddish quartzose sandstones with dolomite. The lighter-colored unit in the lower part of the picture is the Sawatch Sandstone, which is mostly quartz, with a minor potassium feldspar component. Bleached Sawatch looks like a quartz arenite. A basal lag with pebbles occurs at the base of the Sawatch, which nonconformably overlies the Pikes Peak Granite (1.08 billion years old). Both the Peerless and Sawatch are shallow marine units of Late Cambrian age.

Stratigraphy: Peerless Formation (Upper Cambrian) over Sawatch Sandstone (Upper Cambrian)

Locality: Ute Trail Outcrop - exposure along the northeastern side of old Ute Trail, adjacent to Fountain Creek, northwestern end of the town of Manitou Springs, west of Colorado Springs, western El Paso County, central Colorado, USA (38° 52’ 07.28” North latitude, 104° 55’ 28.36” West longitude)

Been meaning to take this for a while. The Pier Hotel stands on the corner of Canning Street and Hamilton Street in Birkenhead. I've only ever known it as this empty shell, a stunning facade left on the corner of a building converted and added to in order to create an office building - also empty. I'm glad they had the good sense to leave this facade intact, though, it's fantastic. Takes you back to a time when companies took real pride in themselves and weren't afraid to be ostentatious about it.

The Birkenhead Brewery Company no longer exists, but in order to make sure that was true I came across some interesting information about its history and was surprised to learn how big it once was and how many famous names still familiar to the British drinking public it once owned.
