LOTUS is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She is 92 feet long with a beam 18 feet and a draft 5.5 feet. She displaces 102 tons. She was designed by naval architects Lee and Brinton, and built in the Sloan Yard, Seattle , Washington. LOTUS was launched in May, 1909.
Built to cruise the Inside Passage of the Pacific Northwest, LOTUS was built for Maurice McMicken, attorney, legal counsel to the legislature of the State of Washington, publisher of the Seattle Post Intelligencer Newspaper, sportsman and civil leader. He cruised her extensively in the waters of the Inland Passage between Olympia WA, through British Columbia and as far north as Alaska.

Impressions of the dazzling topography of Grand Canyon have changed and shifted since that day in the summer of 1540 when Garcia Lopez de Cardenas gazed out from the South Rim. The conquistador saw a worthless desert wasteland, nothing more than a barrier to political expansion. At the opposite extreme, the modern view tends toward the romantic, reveling in what we today perceive as the remarkable spirituality of the gorge. Products of the age in which they lived, American pioneers arriving in the 1890s were more practical and utilitarian: they assumed with so much exposed bedrock inevitably there had to be mineral riches waiting to be claimed by those willing to go below and look. Would-be miners fanned out across the inner canyon, probing everywhere, and at a place called Horseshoe Mesa found what they sought. Rich copper deposits initially averaging 30% pure promised wealth, but only if transported from the depths. Optimism reigned supreme, a route was scratched out, and in February 1893 an endless succession of mule trains began moving raw ore to the rim along a rough canyon track originally known as the Berry Trail, more recently as the Grandview Trail. More than any other canyon trail, the Grandview is steeped in the legacy of the mining days at Grand Canyon. Numerous small artifacts associated with these halcyon days are scattered across the top of Horseshoe Mesa, providing a link across the years. Hikers can inspect the physical remains of this bygone era while enjoying canyon scenery at its finest.
Trail Description
The original Grandview Trail was created to connect the rim with the copper mines on Horseshoe Mesa. The well built trail eventually provided access to more tourists than miners, as the Grandview trail provided one of the best access routes into the canyon for its time. The undamaged segments of the pioneer trail in the upper half of the canyon testify to the engineering prowess of the builders as they devised solution after creative solution to the problems posed by the landscape.Start off the rim from the established Grandview Point overlook. The Kaibab/Toroweap section traverses steep ground and the old trail is eroded so attention to the problems at hand is essential. Vertical steps were surmounted by construction of log "cribs" that were chained or pinned to the cliff face to provide a foundation for the trail where nature provided none. The exposure here impresses some hikers as hazardous. Unfortunately, several of the historic cribs were swept away by landslides during the winter of 2005. Trail crews restored the trail, but not the historical context of the old logs. A series of sloping ledges at the top of the Coconino cliff demands caution especially when icy or wet. Be careful throughout the Kaibab and Toroweap - a fall here could have catastrophic consequences.
Original "cobblestone riprap" trail construction shows throughout most of tthe Coconino. Large slabs of sandstone placed edgewise provided a durable (albeit labor intensive) walking surface. The trail comes to the top of a dramatic east-facing gully at Coconino/Hermit contact (known locally as Coconino Saddle) that offers tantalizing views into the upper valley of Hance Creek. Steep cobblestone switchbacks below Coconino Saddle dispense with most of the Supai Formation before the walking moderates and the trail begins a gradually descending traverse across the slope to Horseshoe Mesa. Horseshoe Mesa offers a myriad of attractions. The campsites are located east of the historic masonry structure. Remnants of mining operations, including rusty cans, nails, tools and structures are protected as archeological resources. Please leave these objects as you found them, where you found them. Backpackers headed deeper into the canyon can choose between three trails that link the rim of Horseshoe Mesa and the Tonto Trail. The northernmost trail that descends the east side of the western arm of the "horseshoe" is the most civilized of these options. Most of the original switchbacks have survived so this route is relatively straightforward, intersecting the Tonto Trail north of Horseshoe Mesa. Hikers can continue along the Tonto about 1.5 miles west to Cottonwood Creek or about 2.2 miles east to Hance Creek. The trail down the west side of the mesa is more demanding, severely washed out in the Tonto Group above the bed of Cottonwood Creek. The path off the east side to Page Spring and Hance Creek is probably the most difficult and exposed. Recent trail work has rendered the hardest place a bit easier, but the potential for a nasty fall exists throughout the Redwall descent. Watch for the spur trail to Page (aka Miners) Spring near the bottom of the Redwall. Modern backpackers use the Tonto Trail to connect the Grandview Trail with points beyond. An established trail follows the bed of Cottonwood Creek to the top of the Tapeats Formation where the Tonto heads west toward the South Kaibab Trail. Hikers walking east from Hance Creek can follow the Tonto Trail toward Mineral Canyon. The Tonto Platform starts breaking down near the west rim of Mineral Canyon causing the trail to drop below the Tapeats Sandstone to descend Supergroup slopes to the bed of Mineral Canyon. Exiting at the mouth of Mineral Canyon on the east side is a bit tricky. The trail splits as it rounds the point before starting down the slope to Hance Rapids. The upper trail is straightforward, but the lower option requires walkers to bend low and traverse a narrow and exposed ledge. There are a couple of ways across the talus to the shoreline at Hance Rapids and the foot of the New Hance Trail.

A new issue of Red Earth (Vol. 1 No. 3, May 29, 1970) has been obtained by Washington Area Spark. Articles in the paper include a declaration of war against the U.S. authored by Bernadine Dohrn of the Weather Underground; coverage of the UMD, GW and Montgomery County high schools student strike; and coverage of the Black Panthers; women’s liberation; and anti-imperialist struggles around the world.
A staff split at the Quicksilver Times alternative newspaper resulted in about half the staff leaving to publish Voice from the Mother Country in April 1970. The paper was renamed Red Earth in subsequent issues.
They took over the Quicksilver offices at 1932 17th Street NW that later in the year became the Community Center of the Black Panther Party. A total of four issues were published.
The start-up paper was initially disrupted by an FBI raid on May 7, 1970 that was ostensibly looking for former DC Regional Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) leader Cathy Wilkerson who at the time was a fugitive member of the Weather Underground Organization.
Two of the staff members of the Voice were arrested on weapons charges.
Nick Greer, the former George Washington University SDS president, was charged with a felony charge of carrying a deadly weapon and possession of an unregistered firearm when agents found a pistol in his pocket. Greer was on probation for charges stemming from the takeover of the Sino-Soviet center on the GW campus.
Robert Chrichton Jr. was taken into custody for possession of prohibited weapons, a sawed-off shotgun and an automatic rifle and possession of unlicensed ammunition.
The newspaper was informally aligned with the Weathermen (later Weather Underground) split-off from SDS that advocated armed action and conducted a years-long bombing campaign of political targets and sought to align itself with the Black Panther Party.

Members of the First Kandak, equivalent to a British Army battalion at their graduation parade from the Afghan National Army Officer Academy (ANAOA ) situated outside Kabul, Afghanistan.
The first cadets from Afghanistan’s British-mentored officer academy were ready to secure their country’s future after completing their training, the Defence Secretary said.
Michael Fallon MP witnessed the passing out of the first intake of the Afghan National Army Officer Academy (ANAOA) at its mountainside base near Kabul on Wednesday 24 September 2014.
He met a number of the 243 graduates, drawn from across Afghan society, who were selected from an initial pool of 10,000 to attend the 42-week leadership course which is inspired by the ethos of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst but tailored to Afghan experience.

I Ching and the genetic code -
or how to heal the consciousness of the cell.
[ ... ] It wants to expand it discovered many similarities, which I represent in brief and yet some others.
1. Each genetic codon consists of 3 amino acid pairs.
A hexagram in the I Ching consists of 3 line pairs
The chaos research discovered that there is an order in the chaos. Life
developed after the so-called Period 3
2. A DNA molecule is inter alia of 4 nitrogen bases, the basic building blocks
the entire genetic code form. These are adenine, thymine, guanine
and cytosine.
The I Ching consists of the two polarities of Yin and Yang will be permanently

Hexagrams of the I Ching, each with a wisdom and guidance for the
Life of the enlightened people in different situations.
Include Fire, water, earth, metal: Each of these basic elements is equivalent to 2
Channel pairs, a yin and a yang meridian. The Yin meridians show how
that energy applied to the people, the Yang meridians, as he
responds to the outside.
4. The genetic code is a double helix that we are in a

feststehendes Paar, das auf 2 verschiedene Weisen verbunden ist.
Es verbindet sich Adenin mit Thymin und Guanin mit Cytosin.
Drei Paare ergeben eine genetische Informationseinheit, auch Codon oder
Triplet genannt. Diese 3 Paare können sich zu insgesamt 64 verschiedenen
Codons oder Triplets (= Informationseinheiten) miteinander verbinden. Daraus
entsteht die Vielfalt des menschlichen Lebens, aber auch des tierischen und
pflanzlichen Lebens. Die Vielfalt der Schöpfung basiert auf diesen
Stickstoffbasen.
Beim I Ging gibt es die unterbrochene und die durchgezogene Linie, die auf 4
verschiedene Weisen zu einem festen Paar verknüpft werden
Drei dieser Paare ergeben ein Hexagramm. Dadurch entstehen die 64
Hexagramme des I Ging, die jeweils eine Weisheit und eine Anleitung für die
Lebensweise des erleuchteten Menschen in unterschiedlichen Lebenslagen
beinhalten.
Feuer; Wasser; Erde; Metall: Jedem dieser Grundelemente entsprechen 2
Meridianpaare, ein yin und ein yang Meridian. Die Yin Meridiane zeigen, wie
die jeweilige Energie auf den Menschen einwirkt, die Yang Meridiane, wie er
darauf nach außen reagiert.
4. Der genetische Code bildet eine Doppelhelix, die wir mit einer in sich
gewundenen Strickleiter vergleichen können. Die Stränge werden von einem 5
C Zucker und Phosphaten, die Sprossen dieser Leiter von den Stickstoffbasen
der Codons gebildet. Diese Doppelhelix ist jedoch in sich geschlossen, besitzt
also keinen definierbaren Anfang und kein definierbares Ende. Der Anfang
und das Ende einer Informationssequenz wird durch so genannte Start und
Stop Codons angezeigt.
Das I Ging wird auch als das Buch der Wandlungen bezeichnet. Es beschreibt
die Abläufe im menschlichen Leben, die es als zyklische, immer
wiederkehrende Kreisläufe erkennt, denen man mit der rechten Einstellung
und Herangehensweise nicht hilflos ausgeliefert ist. Auch hier gibt es
Hexagramme, die über den rechten Beginn oder den Abschluss bzw. Wandel
von Unternehmungen informieren.
Zu den 4 Grundelementen kommen in der östlichen Medizin noch als 5.
Element das Holz-Element, das für Lebendigkeit steht, sowie das
Schutzsystem, das den 5 Elementen ermöglicht ihre Form und Struktur zu
bewahren und unter verschiedenen Lebensbedingungen zu halten, hinzu. Man
könnte sie also auch mit den Strängen der Leiter und die Grundelemente mit
ihren Sprossen vergleichen. Auch hier wird das Wirken der Lebensenergiemeridiane
als zyklisch, in einem Kreislauf eingebettet angesehen. Danach ist
auch die Behandlung und Heilung mit den Energiemeridianen oder
Energiepunkten ausgerichtet.
Von den Hexagrammen des I Ging kann man direkte Verbindungen zu den
Elementen in der östlichen Medizin und damit zu bestimmten Akupunkturmeridianen
(= Bahnen in denen unsere Lebensenergie fließt) herstellen. […]

"The Porsche 944 was Porsche's largest-selling front-engined coupe.
The project was greenlighted in 1980, in response to dropping sales of the Porsche 924.
The 944 was to feature new styling based upon the Porsche 924 Carrera GT, along with a brand-new Porsche designed and developed 2.5 litre four cylinder engine.
The car was the brainchild of the newly appointed Peter Schutz, the CEO of the Porsche company."

A shallow Typic Petrogypsid from the interior of the UAE.
These shallow mineral soils that are less than 50 cm deep (from the soil surface) to a root-limiting layer (petrogypsic or petrocalcic horizon, or a paralithic contact) excluding soils that are in a Lithic subgroup.
Petrogypsids are the Gypsids that have a petrogypsic horizon that has its upper boundary within 100 cm of the soil surface. These soils occur in very arid areas of the world where the parent material is high in content of gypsum. When the petrogypsic horizon is close to the surface, crusting forms pseudohexagonal patterns on the soil surface. Petrogypsids occupy old surfaces. In Syria and Iraq, they are on the highest terraces along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. These soils are not extensive in the United States but are extensive in other countries.
The petrogypsic horizon is a horizon in which visible secondary gypsum has accumulated or has been transformed. The horizon is cemented (i.e., extremely weakly cemented through indurated cementation classes), and the cementation is both laterally continuous and root limiting, even when the soil is moist. The horizon typically occurs as a subsurface horizon, but it may occur at the surface in some soils (foreground).
Gypsids are the Aridisols that have a gypsic or petrogypsic horizon within 100 cm of the soil surface. Accumulation of gypsum takes place initially as crystal aggregates in the voids of the soils. These aggregates grow by accretion, displacing the enclosing soil material. When the gypsic horizon occurs as a cemented impermeable layer, it is recognized as the petrogypsic horizon. Each of these forms of gypsum accumulation implies processes in the soils, and each presents a constraint to soil use. One of the largest constraints is dissolution of the gypsum, which plays havoc with structures, roads, and irrigation delivery systems. The presence of one or more of these horizons, with or without other diagnostic horizons, defines the great groups of the Gypsids. Gypsids occur in Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Somalia, West Asia, and some of the most arid areas of the western part of the United States. Gypsids are on many segments of the landscape. Some of them have calcic or related horizons that overlie the gypsic horizon.

Birth of the mysterious Alchemical Sentinels
3 months working day and night with an exceptional “dream team"… a big thank you to ACS, Luc, my trusty Giant who could lift a juggernaut onto a balcony (QED Thierry Loir) Thomas Cart'1, Goin, and of course Marc for the paints.
I have managed to set up my installation of 99 raw steel sculptures with an incredibly demanding specification: none of the 3600 work on the DDC site were to be hidden… we had to think about power sources, water crossings, access for construction machinery including the telescopic booms (3m wide)… public safety, ERP museum standards, etc, ... constantly alternating between the visible and the invisible...
Are they inhabited? I don’t know. One thing is certain: each sentinel stands as a unique sculpture in terms of its alchemical elements and paintwork (either with anti-rust paint or voluntarily with paints that do not resist rust). This autumn, each sentinel will reveal – with the acid rain – different interpretations, depending on the paints and solvents used, making each one different, with stratifications that future archaeologists will decipher.
But my most perilous challenge was to create a giant (9000 m²) installation that envelops the Abode of Chaos with dozens of tons of steel, so that my visitors, from any angle, enter a dreamlike fantasy and where the world of the Abode of Chaos on the one hand and that of the 99 monumental sculptures (named "Alchemical Sentinels" during an extremely busy night ) intersect like the Inframince defined by Marcel Duchamp (or, how to build intensities by subtraction).
These 99 Alchemical Sentinels are now the guardians of the Sanctuary that the Abode of Chaos has become. I designed them as veritable quantum energy wells that we placed with patience and wisdom at different spots all over the Abode of Chaos.
There are 99 in total, made of 10mm rough steel (50 tons), welded to form perfect equilateral triangles. Each of the three sides constituting an Alchemical Sentinel is itself cut to reveal a meurtrière, again in the shape of an equilateral triangle, presenting a superb Euclidean geometry to the visitor.
These 99 Alchemical Sentinels are each placed at specific energy points on the 9000 m² of the Abode of Chaos. Some are hidden by vegetation or natural landforms or are placed in relation to existing works. Others are located in our private and professionals spaces.
In my alchemical work that began on 9 December 1999, the three gates arranged in an equilateral triangle with one vertex pointing upwards, form the luminous delta. They represent the three elements that alchemists work with. These three elements are sulphur, mercury and salt.
Note that the three elements found in the Prima Materia (or Alchemical Chaos) are very closely related. The point triangle is also the symbol of the fire philosophers.
The equilateral triangle resting on its base – like the three points – is the symbol of the fire element, one of the four elements that the alchemist works with in the laboratory.
The geometric properties of the equilateral triangle evoke absolute perfection by their spiritual strength and their age-old symbolism going back to ancient Egypt… strength, beauty and harmony.
They will remain for a thousand years as witnesses to a civilization lost through the folly of men.

3 mois de travail jour et nuit, une "dream team" hors du commun, un grand merci à ACS, Luc, mon fidèle Géant qui poserait un 38 T. sur un balcon (cqfd Thierry Loir) Thomas, Cart'1, Goin et bien sûr Marc pour les peintures.
Je suis arrivé à poser mon installation de 99 sculptures d'acier brut avec un cahier des charges de ouf, aucune des 3600 œuvres de la DDC ne devaient être occultées, penser aux sources électriques, les passages d'eau, les voies de transport pour engin de chantier, les nacelles télescopiques (3m de large), protéger le grand public, respecter les normes ERP muséales, etc… Alterner en permanence monstration et effacement…
Sont-elles habitées ? Je l'ignore. Une chose certaine est que chacune, par les éléments alchimiques et les codes peints soit à l'antirouille soit volontairement avec des peintures dégradables par la rouille avec le temps, rend chaque sentinelle comme une sculpture unique. Cet automne chaque sentinelle va laisser apparaître, avec les pluies acides, différents niveaux de lecture, selon les peintures et solvants utilisés, les rendant singulières avec des stratifications que les archéologues des temps futurs décrypteront...
Mais mon défi le plus périlleux, était de créer une installation géante de 9000 m2 qui enveloppe, par des dizaines de tonnes d'acier, la Demeure du Chaos pour que mes visiteurs sur 360 degrés, plongent dans un univers onirique et fantasmagorique où les deux univers que sont la Demeure du Chaos d'une part et d'autre part l'installation des 99 sculptures monumentales (baptisées par une nuit très agitée "Sentinelles Alchimiques") s'entrecroisent selon l'Inframince définit par Marcel Duchamp (ou comment construire des intensités par soustraction).
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont désormais les gardiennes du Sanctuaire que représente la Demeure du Chaos. Je les ai conçus comme de véritable puits d’énergie quantique que je pose avec patience et sagesse sur l’ensemble de la Demeure du Chaos.
Elles sont au nombre de 99, faites d’acier brut de 10 mm (50 tonnes) soudées pour former un triangle équilatéral parfait. Chacun des 3 pans constituant une Sentinelle Alchimique, est lui même découpé pour laisser entrevoir une mystérieuse meurtrière, elle même en forme de triangle équilatéral, donnant ainsi une géométrie Euclidienne au regard du visiteur.
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont chacune à des points d’énergie particuliers de la Demeure du Chaos sur 9000 m2. Certaines se dissimulent par la végétation ou les reliefs naturels ou bien en écho aux autres œuvres, d’autres sont dans les espaces privatifs ou professionnels.
Dans mon travail alchimique démarré le 9 décembre 1999, les trois portes disposées en triangle équilatéral, dont un sommet est dirigé vers le haut, forment le delta lumineux. Elle sont les trois corps sur lesquels l’alchimiste va œuvrer. Ces trois corps sont le soufre, le mercure et le sel.
Soulignons que les trois corps présents dans la Materia Prima ou Chaos alchimique sont étroitement mélangés. Le triangle de point est aussi la marque des philosophes par le feu.
Le triangle équilatéral reposant sur sa base, à la manière des trois points, est le symbole de l’élément feu, l’un des quatre éléments avec lequel l’alchimiste travaille au laboratoire.
Les propriétés géométriques du triangle équilatéral relèvent de la perfection absolue par sa force spirituelle, son symbolisme de la nuit des temps notamment dans l’ancienne Egypte, il est force, beauté et harmonie.
Elles resteront durant mille ans comme les témoins d’une civilisation disparue par la folie des hommes

The fourth of the 12 Caesars, Caligula — officially, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus — was a capricious, combustible first-century populist remembered, perhaps unfairly, as the empire’s most tyrannical ruler. As reported by Suetonius, the Michael Wolff of ancient Rome, he never forgot a slight, slept only a few hours a night and married several times, lastly to a woman named Milonia.

During the four years that Caligula occupied the Roman throne, his favorite hideaway was an imperial pleasure garden called Horti Lamiani, the Mar-a-Lago of its day. The vast residential compound spread out on the Esquiline Hill, one of the seven hills on which the city was originally built, in the area around the current Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

There, just on the edge of the city, villas, shrines and banquet halls were set in carefully constructed “natural” landscapes. An early version of a wildlife park, the Horti Lamiani featured orchards, fountains, terraces, a bath house adorned with precious colored marble from all over the Mediterranean, and exotic animals, some of which were used, as in the Colosseum, for private circus games.

When Caligula was assassinated in his palace on the Palatine Hill in 41 A.D., his body was carried to the Horti Lamiani, where he was cremated and hastily buried before being moved to the Mausoleum of Augustus on the Campus Martius, north of the Capitoline Hill. According to Suetonius, the elite garden was haunted by Caligula’s ghost.

Historians have long believed that the remains of the lavish houses and parkland would never be recovered. But this spring, Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism will open the Nymphaeum Museum of Piazza Vittorio, a subterranean gallery that will showcase a section of the imperial garden that was unearthed during an excavation from 2006 to 2015. The dig, carried out beneath the rubble of a condemned 19th-century apartment complex, yielded gems, coins, ceramics, jewelry, pottery, cameo glass, a theater mask, seeds of plants such as citron, apricot and acacia that had been imported from Asia, and bones of peacocks, deer, lions, bears and ostriches.

“The ruins tell extraordinary stories, starting with the animals,” said Mirella Serlorenzi, the culture ministry’s director of excavations. “It is not hard to imagine animals, some caged and some running wild, in this enchanted setting.” The science of antiquities department of the Sapienza University of Rome collaborated on the project.

The objects and structural remnants on display in the museum paint a vivid picture of wealth, power and opulence. Among the stunning examples of ancient Roman artistry are elaborate mosaics and frescoes, a marble staircase, capitals of colored marble and limestone, and an imperial guard’s bronze brooch inset with gold and mother-of-pearl. “All the most refined objects and art produced in the Imperial Age turned up,” Dr. Serlorenzi said.

The classicist Daisy Dunn said the finds were even more extravagant than scholars had anticipated. “The frescoes are incredibly ornate and of a very high decorative standard,” noted Dr. Dunn, whose book “In The Shadow of Vesuvius” is a dual biography of Pliny the Elder — a contemporary of Caligula’s — and his nephew Pliny the Younger. “Given the descriptions of Caligula’s licentious lifestyle and appetite for luxury, we might have expected the designs to be quite gauche.”

The Horti Lamiani were commissioned by Lucius Aelius Lamia, a wealthy senator and consul who bequeathed his property to the emperor, most likely during the reign of his friend Tiberius from A.D. 14 to 37. When Caligula succeeded him — it is rumored that Caligula and the Praetorian Guard prefect Macro hastened the death of Tiberius by smothering him with a pillow — he moved into the main house.

In an evocative eyewitness account, the philosopher Philo, who visited the estate in A.D. 40 on behalf of the Jews of Alexandria, and his fellow emissaries had to trail behind Caligula as he inspected the sumptuous residences “examining the men’s rooms and the women’s rooms … and giving orders to make them more costly.” The emperor, wrote Philo, “ordered the windows to be filled up with transparent stones resembling white crystal that do not hinder the light, but which keep out the wind and the heat of the sun.”

Evidence suggests that after Caligula’s violent death — he was hacked to bits by his bodyguards — the house and garden survived at least until the Severan dynasty, which ruled from A.D. 193 to 235. By the fourth century, the gardens had apparently fallen into desuetude, and statuary in the abandoned pavilions was broken into pieces to build the foundations of a series of spas. The statues were not discovered until 1874, three years after Rome was made the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. With the Esquiline Hill in the midst of a building boom, the Italian archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani nosed around freshly excavated construction sites and uncovered an immense gallery with an alabaster floor and fluted columns of giallo antico, considered the finest of the yellow marbles.

He later stumbled upon a rich deposit of classical sculptures that, at some point in the horti’s history, had been deliberately hidden to protect them. The treasures included the Lancellotti Discobolus, now housed at the National Museum of Rome; the Esquiline Venus and a bust of Commodus depicted as Hercules, now at the Capitoline Museums. In short time, the sculptures were carted off, the foundation of an apartment building was laid, and the ancient ruins were reburied.

The latest excavation of the horti unfolded under the detritus of the residences, which had been evacuated in the 1970s in the wake of a building collapse. Much like the 2012 exhumation of Richard III in Leicester, England, the unburying involved a modern parking site.
Sixteen years ago, the three-and-a-half-acre property was purchased by Enpam, a private foundation that manages pensions for Italian doctors and dentists. Exploratory core drilling for a new headquarters and a six-level underground garage brought forth a wealth of first-century relics, from the type of window glass described by Philo to lead pipes stamped with the name of Claudius, Caligula’s uncle and successor.
As construction crews erected the five-story office building, archaeologists in a trench 18 feet below street level gingerly screened and scraped away soil. In a study lab across town, paleobotanists and archaeozoologists analyzed fragments, and researchers painstakingly repaired a 10-foot-high wall fresco painted with pigment made from ground cinnabar. The entire $3.5 million conservation and restoration project was underwritten by Enpam.

Ground was broken for the Nymphaeum Museum in 2017. “The new space, in the basement of Enpam, brings to light one of the mythical places of the empire’s capital, one of the garden residences loved by the emperors,” said Daniela Porro, the museum director.
What all of this does for Caligula’s seemingly irredeemable reputation is an open question. He emerges from Suetonius’s “The Twelve Caesars,” written 80 years after the emperor was bumped off, as utterly depraved: having incestuous relationships with his sisters, sleeping with anyone he liked the look of, using criminals as food for his wild beasts when beef became too pricey and insisting that a loyal subject who had vowed to give his own life if the emperor survived an illness should carry through on his promise and die.
Mary Beard, a professor of classics at Cambridge University, posited that while Caligula might have been assassinated because he was a monster, it is equally possible that he was made into a monster because he was assassinated. In “SPQR,” her rich history of ancient Rome, she argues that “it is hard to resist the conclusion that, whatever kernel of truth they might have, the stories told about him are an inextricable mixture of fact, exaggeration, willful misinterpretation and outright invention — largely constructed after his death, and largely for the benefit of the new emperor, Claudius.”
Whether Caligula got a raw deal from history is a subject of hot and unyielding debate. “There is clearly some bias in the sources,” Dr. Dunn allowed. “But even without that, it is difficult to envision him as a good emperor. I doubt these new discoveries will do much to rehabilitate his character. But they should open up new vistas onto his world, and reveal it to be every bit as paradisiacal as he desired it to be.”

Inaugurata la nuova sede della Fondazione - Giovedì 19 dicembre la Fondazione Enpam ha presentato al pubblico la nuova sede di piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. A tagliare il nastro sono stati il presidente Alberto Oliveti e il sindaco di Roma Ignazio Marino. Nel corso della cerimonia inaugurale sono state illustrate le caratteristiche del palazzo che ospita i nuovi uffici. È intervenuta anche la sovrintendente per i Beni archeologici Mariarosaria Barbera, che ha presentato i risultati degli scavi condotti sotto l’edificio.

I ritrovamenti archeologici - Parallelamente alla costruzione del nuovo palazzo, avviata nel 2005 sui resti di un edificio di epoca post-unitaria, è stato condotto il più vasto scavo compiuto dopo quelli intrapresi in occasione del trasferimento della capitale del Regno d’Italia a Roma. Il risultato ottenuto sono 1600 metri quadrati di terreno investigati, 12 mila metri cubi di materiale passati al setaccio e più di 8 mila cassette di reperti attualmente in fase di pulizia e restauro. Tra i manufatti meglio conservati e di maggior interesse storico e archeologico spiccano una scala e una condotta per l’acqua recante le insegne dell’imperatore Claudio. “Sono molto felice di essere qui in duplice veste, da sindaco e iscritto all’Enpam dal 1979 – ha detto il sindaco di Roma Ignazio Marino –. Questa sede dimostra quanto Roma debba essere orgogliosa e attenta al suo patrimonio e quanto l’architettura contemporanea possa fare conservando comunque l’aspetto storico. Grazie all’Enpam che ha riqualificato la piazza qui di fronte”.

Lo scavo dà un contributo unico per poter ricostruire l’evoluzione degli insediamenti della Roma antica sul colle Esquilino. È in questa zona di proprietà degli imperatori infatti che insistevano i cosiddetti Horti Lamiani. L’area archeologica venuta alla luce testimonia la suddivisione in terrazzamenti, evidenziati dai muri lunghi e bassi, e arricchiti da numerose specie vegetali. Sulla stessa area inoltre, sono stati ritrovati i resti di un grande ambiente a pianta rettangolare di circa 400 metri quadri, risalente all’epoca imperiale e dotato di ambienti di servizio, di una fontana e di altre strutture murarie. Il progetto finale prevede la conservazione quasi integrale delle architetture e la trasformazione museale del seminterrato. Il piano destinato a ospitare la sala congressi della Fondazione sarà integrato da ricostruzioni virtuali in 3d, animazioni video, pannelli didascalici e vetrine espositive, per favorire la fruizione del contesto archeologico da parte del pubblico.

Riqualificazione dell’Esquilino - La nuova sede dell’Enpam inoltre restituisce decoro a piazza Vittorio e contribuisce a riqualificare il rione Esquilino. Nel palazzo, che è vigilato 24 ore su 24, lavorano ora 491 impiegati, con ricadute positive anche sulla sicurezza e sulle attività commerciali del quartiere. “Abbiamo fatto un’iniezione di medicina al quartiere” ha detto il presidente dell’Enpam, Alberto Oliveti. L’Ente è stato anche attento alla sostenibilità ambientale. Nonostante abbia coinvolto centinaia di persone, il cambiamento della sede di lavoro ha avuto un impatto pressoché nullo sulla viabilità locale: oltre la metà dei dipendenti (261) hanno l’abbonamento annuale al trasporto pubblico locale tramite il mobility manager dell’Enpam; il parcheggio sotterraneo può contenere tutti i motorini e le biciclette di coloro che arrivano su due ruote; ci sono inoltre una sessantina di posti auto.

Nei sotterranei un’area archeologica - Resti della Roma imperiale sotto la nuova sede dell’Enpam riaffiorano da un passato di distruzione in un processo di riqualificazione urbanistica.
Uno scavo archeologico così vasto non si vedeva a Roma dagli anni in cui è diventata capitale del Regno d’Italia. Sotto Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, la più grande piazza romana (316 x 174 metri) sono stati investigati 1.600 metri quadrati di terreno, passati al setaccio 12mila metri cubi di materiale e riempite più di 8mila cassette di reperti attualmente in fase di pulizia e restauro. Parallelamente alla costruzione dell’edificio dell’Enpam, gli archeologi della Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma hanno svolto e monitorato una campagna di scavo portando alla luce resti risalenti all’epoca imperiale (III/IV secolo d.C). Già dalla fine dell’Ottocento era documentata in questa zona la presenza dei cosiddetti ‘Horti Lamiani’, vaste proprietà, ville e giardini appartenute alla ‘gens Lamia’ passate poi al demanio imperiale. All’inaugurazione, pochi giorni prima di Natale, i resti sotto la sede dell’Enpam sono stati illustrati dalla Soprintendente per i beni archeologici di Roma Mariarosa Barbera, che ha seguito gli scavi fin dall’inizio. Il ritrovamento – ha detto – riguarda una tra le ville più grandi dell’antichità romana, una specie di Villa d’Este. “Un ambiente a pianta rettangolare di circa 400 metri quadri completamente ricoperto di marmi, gemme, bronzi dorati, tarsie colorate – ha detto Barbera.
Stiamo ricomponendo le migliaia di frammenti di affreschi ritrovati. Nell’immediato futuro saranno visibili in questa sede pareti decorate, tra le più belle del mondo antico”. Spiccano per interesse storico e archeologico oltre che per lo stato di conservazione la scala in marmo (nella foto a tutta pagina) e una condotta per l’acqua su cui è impresso il nome dell’imperatore Claudio.

PROGETTO AREA MUSEALE - Per recuperare e valorizzare i reperti archeologici il progetto finale prevede l’allestimento di un percorso museale nel piano seminterrato accanto alla sala convegni e a un bar. Gli scavi quindi diventeranno un luogo vivo. “Il rudere non viene isolato – ha detto Mirella Serlorenzi, funzionario della Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma – ma interagisce con le strutture moderne e diventa un arricchimento reciproco. Questo progetto ha dimostrato che è possibile conciliare tutela dell’antico e trasformazione della città contemporanea”. È prevista la conservazione quasi integrale delle architetture in parte visibili sotto pavimenti di vetro. Tutto questo nel contesto di un edificio in cui lavorano centinaia di dipendenti e si svolgono riunioni importanti per tutta la categoria dei medici e degli odontoiatri. Non potendo ricreare il contesto originario, saranno proposte ricostruzioni virtuali in 3d, animazioni video, effetti sonori, pannelli didascalici e vetrine espositive, in modo che il visitatore possa immaginare come era questa parte di città nel periodo romano. Da sottolineare – dice Serlorenzi – l’aspetto tecnologico e ingegneristico messo a punto per sorreggere le strutture archeologiche senza effettuare alcuna forma di delocalizzazione. Sono state fatte una serie di perforazioni circolari contigue riempite successivamente con tubi di acciaio legati tra loro a formare un sostegno”.

Scoperto uno dei palazzi preferiti dell'imperatore Caligola - Un team di archeologi ha rinvenuto a Roma le rovine di uno dei palazzi preferiti dell'imperatore Caligola. Il luogo era conosciuto per il suo giardino esotico, con piante provenienti da luoghi remoti e animali selvaggi di tutti gli angoli dell'Impero.
Un team di archeologi italiani ha annunciato una scoperta straordinaria: le rovine di uno dei palazzi preferiti di Caligola, il terzo imperatore romano. L'esistenza di questo edificio – noto come Nympheum (casa delle ninfe) nelle fonti classiche – era conosciuta, ma la localizzazione esatta era andata perduta. Fino a pochi anni fa.
Il palazzo perduto - La scoperta è stata realizzata durante gli scavi in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (più conosciuta come piazza Vittorio), nei pressi del Colosseo e della stazione ferroviaria di Roma Termini. I lavori erano cominciati tre anni fa e hanno portato alla luce decine di migliaia di resti archeologici, tra i quali anfore, pezzi di ceramica, gioielli, monete e una gran varietà di utensili domestici. Gli scavi più recenti sotto un edificio hanno portato a individuare le strutture del giardino che erano state sepolte, oltre a nuovi resti archeologici che hanno permesso di identificare il luogo come il palazzo perduto di Caligola.
Gli archeologi hanno rinvenuto semi di plante esotiche di origini diverse, ossa di animali selvaggi come cervi, orsi, leoni e struzzi. Sono stati questi gli elementi che hanno permesso di identificare la struttura come il Nympheum. Mirella Serlorenzi, direttrice del sitio archeologico, ha spiegato che alcuni di questi animali «correvano liberi come fosse un paesaggio incantato, ma [c'erano] anche animali feroci che venivano utilizzati, come nel Colosseo, per i giochi circensi privati». Caligola è passato alla storia proprio per il suo carattere stravagante e crudele, che si riconduce di solito a una misteriosa malattia mentale che lo colpì nel corso del suo primo anno di regno.
Gli scavi hanno permesso di identificare varie strutture del giardino, come una scala di marmo bianco che collegava i diversi livelli del giardino e una tubatura per il trasporto dell'acqua. Il nome Nympheum evoca le ninfe, divinità dei boschi e delle montagne, e in effetti nel giardino si era voluto ricreare uno spazio selvaggio. Questo spiegherebbe la presenza degli animali e dei ninfei, piccole grotte dedicate proprio alle divinità boschive. Le autorità italiane in collaborazione con l'Enpam, l'ente previdenziale dei medici proprietario del terreno nel quale è stata realizzata la scoperta, hanno lavorato per trasformare il luogo nel Museo-Ninfeo di Piazza Vittorio, che presto sarà aperto al pubblico.

Nei giorni scorsi è stato pubblicato su “Il Messaggero” un articolo a firma di Laura Larcan che descrive con dovizia di particolari il progetto da tempo annunciato e in fase di avanzata realizzazione di un museo nei sotterranei del Palazzo ENPAM a Piazza Vittorio che donerà un’altra fantastica attrazione archeologica al Rione Esquilino e alla città di Roma: stiamo parlando della Villa di Caligola, praticamente un’altra Domus Aurea che sorgeva nell’area dell’odierna Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

La singolarità è che oltre una costruzione fastosa con rivestimenti marmorei di eccezionale qualità e bellezza nella proprietà imperiale erano presenti lussureggianti giardini popolati da numerosi animali in libertà e fantastici giochi d’acqua. Presto sarà possibile ammirare ciò che rimane della “domus” comprese delle scale originali che collegavano i diversi livelli dei giardini e migliaia di reperti archeologici (alcuni unici nel loro genere) rinvenuti negli scavi che sono stati eseguiti dalla Soprintendenza speciale archeologia belle arti e paesaggio di Roma per riportare alla luce questa ulteriore perla del Rione Esquilino. Di seguito l’articolo del Messaggero del 15 novembre 2020 e i diversi post sui social network che testimoniano come la notizia abbia avuto una vasta eco anche internazionale.

The Doom Painting.
The church's most notable feature, the Last Judgment or "Doom" mural, fills the wall above the chancel arch and greets you as you walk in. Pre-restoration drawings confirm that this composition is original to 1475 and the details are familiar from other 15th-century murals. The color has faded quite a bit, but the completeness of the work is remarkable, as is the detailed backdrop featuring buildings, trees and landscape.
As in other depictions of this scene, the Doom mural depicts Christ in judgment with the apostles in the center, with the blessed on the left and the damned on the right. A frightening Devil can be seen to the right of the arch, with an ale-wife beneath him. Interestingly, the demons lack the customary instruments of torture. This being a town church, bishops but no merchants are included among the damned! The two saints at the foot of the mural are St. James and St. Osmund.

During the last ice advance and retreat (in the latest Pleistocene), an extension of the Cordilleran ice sheet, called the Puget lobe, covered the Puget Sound region (see location map).
The colored area of the map represents the approximate maximum extent of the Puget Lobe during this time period. During glacial maximum, the location of modern-day Seattle (near the center of this map) was beneath 3,000 feet of ice.
All of the land and waterways in this region were shaped, at least in part, by the glacial ice of the Puget lobe. Many large-scale glacial landforms are preserved in the landscape today. In this lidar*-derived map, landforms such as drumlins, kettles, eskers, and glacial stream channels can be seen. Examples of these and other landscape features are enlarged at bottom right.
Most of Washington’s population lives in this region—the glacial geology influences many aspects of daily life, including transportation, water supply systems, agriculture, and building regulations.
During the advance and retreat of the Puget lobe, drainages around the ice sheet were blocked, forming multiple proglacial lakes. The darker colors on this map indicate lower elevations, and show many of these valleys. The Stillaguamish, Snohomish, Snoqualmie, and Puyallup River valleys all once contained proglacial lakes. There are many remnants of these lakes left today, such as Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish, east of Seattle.
As the Puget lobe retreated, lake outflows, glacial meltwater, and glacial outburst flooding all contributed to dozens of channels that flowed southwest to the Chehalis River at the southwest corner of this map. Remnants of these channels can be seen along the eastern and southern edge of the colored area in the map. Present-day Lake Kapowsin and Ohop Lake both occupy one of these channels. Today, the Chehalis River flows through a wide valley that was largely sculpted by ice-age meltwater.
Drumlins - Drumlins (or fluted ridges) are geologic features where movement of the ice sheet smooths glacial sediment into elongated teardrop shapes. Drumlins align in the direction of the ice flow and are evident across most of the Puget Lowland.
Mima Mounds - Intriguing features called Mima Mounds are found on Mima Prairie and in several outwash channels in the southern part of this map. Composed of organic-rich, sandy soil, Mima Mounds on this map are only found on the most recent glacial outwash deposits. The origin of the mounds has been debated for decades and a consensus on their formation has not yet been agreed upon.
Kettles - Glacial kettles are depressions that form when a retreating glacier leaves a bit of ice behind which then becomes buried by sediment shed from glacial streams. When the block of ice melts, the sediment collapses, forming a kettle. Kettles can be dry or filled with water, depending on their depth and the level of groundwater in the area.
Eskers - Eskers are snake-shaped landforms that are often found near the glacier’s terminus. Eskers are formed when rivers that are underneath, on top of, or within a glacier, transport pebble- to cobble-sized gravel that is exposed once the glacier retreats. The resulting landform is a sinuous ridge of gravel that runs roughly parallel to the direction of ice flow.
Outwash Channels - Dozens of stream channels were created by glacial lake outflows, glacial meltwater streams, and glacial outburst floods. Today, many of the channels no longer transport water or have smaller streams occupying them than the streams that formed them.
Fault scarps - Sharp breaks in the fluted topography make it easy to identify geologically recent faults, such as this one called the Toe Jam Hill fault on Bainbridge Island west of Seattle, which is part of the Seattle fault zone.
