Despite several violent expulsions, Paiheotuu persevered. He fought bravely, repeatedly piercing the giant's stomach until he finally swallowed him whole.
After freeing the king's wife, all the herons proclaimed him king, recognising him as a great warrior who had done what all the others had failed to do.

About 40 year ago, Paris' Pont Neuf was transformed by creative couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude for their project Pont Neuf Wrapped–a landmark moment in the history of contemporary arts. The bridge, which has witnessed many major events in the French capital, became the center of attention. To honor the legacy of these artists, JR—an equally sizable figure— will try his hand at turning the bridge into an installation for his Project Pont-Neuf.

PAR AN !!!

BY 2030, TESLA PLANS TO PRODUCE NEARLY 20 MILLION ELECTRIC VEHICLES... PER YEAR !!!
A volume that should accompany a global trend, driven by regulations aimed at restricting and then prohibiting the sale of some internal combustion vehicles.
But this development will not happen without posing a major problem, which is likely to affect many aspects of our daily lives.
But to power thousands...sorry, millions of electric vehicles, you need a lot of electricity!!!
According to PG&E, energy distributor for much of California, demand could increase by 70% over the next two decades.
McKinsey, meanwhile, predicts a 100% increase for the whole of the United States by 2050. However, in the land of Uncle Sam, production has only increased by 1% each year. since the beginning of the century, a scale that is also found in other developed countries.
A real headache for Elon Musk, who is already forecasting major electricity shortages due to weak supply over the next two years. "I can't stress enough that we need more electricity," he told an energy conference. "However much electricity you think you need, we need more."
There is another sector, which I tell you about from time to time on this gallery and which will need a lot of electricity in the years to come...
The increasing use of artificial intelligence, and in particular programs such as ChatGPT, promises to consume more and more energy and resources as it evolves and becomes more widespread!
For the South African billionaire, shortages could hamper the development of the sector, which is bad news both for his AI projects, but also for other aspects of his business!
IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN WHETHER ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET WILL SUCCEED, AS HE DID WITH THE AUTOMOBILE AND THE SPACE INDUSTRY, IN GIVING A NEW IMPETUS TO THE ELECTRICITY SECTOR ... 🤔

°°°°°°°°°°°°
Demonstrations in large cities have often been the scene of diverse demands, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and women's rights.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated urban inequalities, turning a health crisis into a crisis of urban access and equity. Housing conditions have increased women's vulnerability to violence, and mobility restrictions have limited their ability to escape these situations. In addition, the use of public transport has declined, which could jeopardise efforts to achieve sustainable and safe transport.
Women have played a crucial role in demonstrations to express their anger at persistent inequalities. For example, on 8 March 2024, more than 30,000 women in Belgium took part in strikes and demonstrations to demand greater respect for care work.
These actions highlight the importance of recognising and valuing women's work, which is often undervalued.

Following my last 3 2024 Papua tours, I've been able to shoot 5 more species of Delias, plus one kind contribution from the friend Cheongweei Gan. So I produced an updated version of my poster of West Papua Delias, now counting 36 species. I hope I will update it again during the year, because I will visit again Papua in June and in December 2025.

I post this series of photos of an anti-war protest in central London as a neutral observer (more photos will be following soon). I'm no fan of either Russian or Western imperialism and military aggression and I have every sympathy with the Ukrainians who are facing a war of aggression from their more powerful northern neighbour, part of the motive for which seems to be to rebuild the prestige and power of Russia, as a sort of new Russian empire reflecting the former hegemonic influence over Eastern Europe of the Soviet Union. All at an immense cost in lives, and also a clear and grave violation of international law. Putin's decision to escalate the nuclear standoff with the West by publicly placing his nuclear forces on high alert should be another reminder of just how dangerous he is.
However, the West should also share a significant portion of the blame for this war. The Russian invasion is far from "unprovoked" as many media commentators claim. First, we have to remember recent history and how Russia has good reason to fear NATO which was originally set up to combat the threat of the 'Russian hordes.' It is remarkable how in 1990 Mikhail Gorbachev, despite his familiarity with Germany's responsibility for having invaded Russia twice during the twentieth century (in 1914 and 1941), agreed to allow East Germany to join West Germany inside a hostile military alliance. There was however a quid pro quo, as promised by President George H. W. Bush (senior) and Secretary of State James Baker that NATO wouldn't move "another inch to the east" but that promise was soon broken as during the Clinton presidency, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary joined, and then under President George W. Bush, the NATO alliance was further extended to include Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Baltic States, and further still under Obama to Croatia and Albania.
This means that NATO forces are now frequently deployed right around Russia's western borders (except for Ukraine and Belarus). One can imagine, Washington's paranoia, if say in the 1960s or 1970s, Mexico and Canada had declared their intention to join the Warsaw Pact and many people may be familiar with how Cuba's desire to station Soviet missiles on its territory to deter a feared US invasion (and frequent terror attacks), almost led to a nuclear war, though fortunately Khrushchev saw wisdom and backed down in the face of JFK's terrifying brinkmanship and secretly the United States did agree to withdraw some of its older strategic nuclear missiles from Turkey.
At the same time the United States sees Ukraine as occupying a key space on the strategic chessboard, and has ensured that Ukraine has become increasingly dependent on foreign debt and Washington's goodwill, and has continued to plan for Ukraine's eventual incorporation into NATO. That would mean Ukraine, which occupies a vital strategic position on Russia's southern flank and with its border just 350 miles from Moscow, would also become a potential platform for an assault on Russia and even if no assault ever occurred, the mere fact of NATO's enhanced power, would inevitably greatly diminish any remaining influence Russia had to counterbalance US hegemony in Europe. That's why Ukraine's membership of NATO is something which no Russian leader was ever likely to accept. It is of course easy to see a possible compromise - that Ukraine should remain neutral but that in return all countries should respect its territorial integrity, although allowing some autonomy for the Russian speaking areas in Crimea and the Donbass.
Western media has downplayed the suffering of the Russian population in the Donbass region, which for years has been subjected to constant shelling from government forces, and although Ukrainian civilians have also been killed by Russian backed separatists, the UN figures clearly show that year after year, it was the Russian population which suffered a far higher level of fatalities and serious injuries, including the deaths of many children.
ukraine.un.org/sites/default/files/2022-02/Conflict-relat...
Western media also holds up Ukraine as a beacon of freedom and democracy, but while there have been some important gains for civil society in recent years, Russians have good reason to be unhappy. The Ukraine government has harassed and detained several opposition and pro-Russian journalists and in February 2017 it banned the commercial importation of books from Russia and a new education law made Ukrainian the sole language of instruction in secondary schools, which obviously discriminated against its Russian population. Fascist militias are also growing in number and corruption is endemic while the UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture suspects the Ukrainian government of operating secret prisons.
However, it should be noted that the human rights record of the separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk have also received intense criticism from the UN OHCHR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights) and various NGOs for suspected human rights abuses, while Russia's appalling human rights record and its increasing authoritarianism is well known.
To avoid the enormous risk of a nuclear confrontation the West has to start thinking of a way to allow Putin to climb down, without jeopardising European security or sacrificing the freedoms of the Ukrainian people and the obvious way would be to agree to recognise Ukraine as a neutral sovereign state which would remain outside NATO and with a real democratic autonomy for the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
If the West continues to funnel enormous quantities of high tech military equipment into Ukraine, without any attempt to reach a political compromise (by recognising Russia's legitimate security concerns and autonomy for the Donbass region while still guaranteeing Ukraine's sovereignty) there's a very real risk that an increasingly frustrated Putin will issue an ultimatum for the tactical use of nuclear weapons in order to regain the upper hand on the battlefield, and this will be an incredibly dangerous moment for humankind.

Isalo is one of Madagascar's most beautiful parks. It contains sculpted buttes, vertical rock walls and, best of all, deep canyon floors shot through with streams, lush vegetation and pools for swimming. All of this changes with the light, culminating in extraordinary sunsets beneath a big sky. Add all this to easy access off the RN7 and you understand why this is Madagascar’s most visited park.
At more than 800 sq km, it’s also a large park, so if you want to go off on your own there is plenty of room for exploration, with everything from two-hour to week-long hikes. There's also an excellent chance of spotting ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the Nemaza campsite.

(from - Wrigley's 1918 British Columbia Directory) - CRAIGS CROSSING - a Post Office and station on the E. & N. Railway, 20 miles north of Nanaimo and 92 miles north of Victoria, in Alberni Provincial Electoral District. Nearest telegraph office, C. P. R. at Parksville Jet., distant 4 miles and nearest steamer landing-point at Beaver Creek, Union Steamship Co.'s boats, distant 2 miles. The population in 1918 was 55. Local resources: One sawmill, one shingle mill, logging and shingle-bolt camps in operation.
CRAIG'S CROSSING - James and Robert Craig arrived at Craig Bay in 1885 and in 1887 recorded their land claim. Besides sheep farming James was a busy teamster. He petitioned the provincial government to establish a wharf at Arbutus Point (now Madrona Point). It was completed in 1893 and known as Beaver Creek wharf. Coastal steamers came with supplies from Nanalmo and Victoria for the small settlement at Englishman's River. At one time there was also a hotel there but it burned down. The advent of the E. & N. Railway in 1910 curtailed the steamship travel up the coast. James Craig was very Involved In the extension of the railway from Nanalmo. His property became a construction camp, complete with blacksmith shop, equipment sheds and the office-home of the project engineer. Eventually a crossing and railway siding were built and became known as CRAIG'S CROSSING. Jim Kingsley recalls working there as a very young man. James Craig was also a local postmaster and road foreman. He earned the nickname "Couger" because of his prowess as a cougar bounty hunter. He and his two sons Duncan and Fred had such reputations as cougar hunters that they received calls for assistance from all over tt1e Island. His first car, bought in the 1920's was affectionately known as the cougar wagon. James' son Fred still lives on part of the old Craig property. - Compiled by Marjorie Leffler - LINK to the complete article - www.parksville.ca/cms/wpattachments/wpID584atID9714.pdf

Clipped from - Nanaimo Daily News newspaper - Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada - 20 April 1946 - JAMES CRAIG, 82 TAKEN BY DEATH - One of the most interesting and colorful figures of this section of Vancouver Island died early this morning at Nanaimo Hospital. He was James Craig, 82, pioneer of Craig's Crossing and renowned as leading panther hunter of this entire section. He came to the Island in 1882, from Prince Edward Island, of which he was a native son. Considerably more than 150 Island cougar fell to the gun of this renowned hunter who was the originator of the use of the breed of Louisiana racoon hounds, for hunting the big "cats' here. With his brother Robert he worked westward with C.P.R. construction in the early days. At that time the western terminus was at Lytton. From that point he walked to Vancouver, then taking a canoe for the trip to Comox. This was in 1885, and the canoe with all supplies was lost upon the Comox Spit. Landing safely, however, the' Craig brothers tramped back down the Island and ultimately took up a homestead at what Is now Craig's Crossing. Mr. Craig was predeceased by his wife, the former Gertrude Busby, and his brother Robert died 18 years ago. With his two sons, Duncan and Fred, Mr. Craig became famous as a cougar hunter and Island guide. Besides his two sons he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Lochore of Craig's Crossing; Mrs. Harry Pack of Ocean Falls and one grandson, Bill Pack, of Ocean Falls. At least twelve plaques set in the same borders and skillfully worked in the same techniques are known to have survived, perhaps from a shrine or an altarpiece.
The imagery of the series is complicated, but not exclusively Christian as can be seen in the three examples shown here from the V & A museum.

A bumble bee with issues. This is the Yellow-banded Bumble Bee. Or, scientifically, we call it Bombus terricola. Its one of a number of Bumbles in North America that have been penalized by the introduction of Nosema bombi, an inadvertent import from Europe. Populations crashed, but the species can still be found in all of its range...and show some indications of recovery...though that is perhaps a premature conclusion. This specimen comes from State College, PA at the southern edge of its range (outside of the Appalachians that is). Good for D. Brough for finding it.Pictures by Sydney Price.

Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire (Loiret)

Brachyhesma species, Australian Minute Bee, specimen collected by xxx in Australia
Long:
Until recently those who worked on the taxonomy of bees, or taxonomy in general for that matter, were men. Culturally that imbalance is now shifting, though we clearly still have a ways to go. Early female taxonomists were not unheard of however, and Australian Elizabeth Exley was a good example having described over 200 species of bees, working even after her retirement just for the joy of it. She described many of the 41 species of Minute Bees.
Minutes Bees are just that, minute, some are as small as 2mm in length and all have a wan yellow base color to the integument of their exoskeleton . They are known to feed on the many species of plants in the Myrtle family in Australia, especially from Eucalyptus where hundreds of individuals can be obtained with a sweep net and an extremely long handle. These bees are a good example of the evolutionary radiation that occurred in the family Colletidae in Australia with bees ranging much larger than a honeybee down to less than 2 mm.

Further in Summer than the Birds
Pathetic from the Grass

Its unobtrusive Mass.
No Ordinance be seen
So gradual the Grace
A pensive Custom it becomes
Enlarging Loneliness.
Antiquest felt at Noon

Repose to typify
Remit as yet no Grace

Although identical both in size and shape to the Singer Model 15, the Singer Model 115 was a rotary sewing machine based upon machines from the Wheeler & Wilson company which Singer required in 1905. The Model 115 was also Singer's first family use rotary sewing machine developed by itself.
It is likely that Singer Model 115 was the replacement of the Model 9W, which was basically a W&W No. 9 with a large bedplate that Singer manufactured from about 1905 - 1913.
Unlike the Model 15 which is among the most commonly found of Singer machines, the Model 115 is not frequently encountered.
This beautiful example of the Singer Model 115 Rotary was originally made as a treadle driven machine. It has the decal set variously known as the "Tiffany" or "Gingerbread" pattern.
The 115 has a full rotary hook mechanism. The faceplate shows very strong similarity to the Singer Model 15 which was made in much greater numbers, and the 115 is often confused with it.

Eyes and Crowle Story.
(courtesy of the Vintage and Veteran Motorcycle Club of SA)
In early 1906 William Crowle and Robert Eyes established the motor firm Eyes & Crowle, Limited. They began in Adelaide, South Australia, and were “Sole Agents” for many makes of motorcars and motorcycles over time. Mr Crowle had much experience in this area as he had “mastered all the details of the business” by working in and managing motor and electrical organisations in America, England and Europe prior to setting up business in Adelaide. The firm initially started selling bicycles and motor cycles, but over time the motor car section of the business grew until it became their major operation as well as looking after the servicing of motor vehicles and selling related accessories.
In 1908 the company went public and a new garage was opened across the country in Sydney. The next few years proved to be very expansive for the firm. They opened new businesses in country S.A., in places such as Burra, Mount Gambier, and Cowell. By 1911 the acre-sized main property at 75-79 Pirie St. Adelaide employed 50 people and sold, on average, 100 cars a year. Even though the company was selling many more different makes of cars compared to motorcycles, the average annual sales of Triumph motor cycles (100 per annum) were about the same as the total motor car sales.
The Advertiser called the company “one of the largest, as well as one of the most efficiently equipped, motor garages and motor works in the Commonwealth” in an article which also claimed that, population-based, “South Australia has long had the reputation of possessing more motor vehicles than any other country in the world.” The bulk of the company's business became selling motor cars, and some of their selection of “The World’s Best Cars” they sold included Buick, De Dion Bouton, F.I.A.T., Minerva, Crossley, Clement, Darracq, Sunbeam, Delage, F.N., Sizaire et Naudin, Maudslay, Itala, K.R.I.T., Durant, Rugby, Belsize, Packard, Hupmobile, Cardillac, Bean, as well as “Commer” Motor Lorries. Eyes & Crowle sold a much smaller variety of motorcycles.
Unfortunately, times and fortunes change. Several factors combined to influence Eyes & Crowle’s eventual demise. Eyes & Crowle lost the agency for Buick, a brand that is still going today. By the late 1920s the business was starting to wind down. Maybe their future would have been different if they had retained Buick or picked up the Ford agency which had belonged to Duncan & Fraser. Anyway, in February 1930, Eyes & Crowle’s managing director Mr H. W. Reid left to head Autocars Ltd in Adelaide. Shortly after that move, Autocars Ltd took over the selling of Rugby-Durant vehicles from Eyes & Crowle as well as the selling of Nash cars and Federal trucks. By May 1st 1930 the centrally located and well know premises of Eyes & Crowle had been taken over by the ‘Lewis’ firm and was being used as a parking station and servicing centre. The remaining stock of second hand vehicles were sold off at bargain prices. Today, the original Eyes & Crowle building is opposite a Subway business.
