1. I marked where the spike fit while the glove was being worn.

2. That area is cut out.

3. Pin! So many pins. You'll see I kept some interfacing where the seams will be.

4. Sew! Careful around those finger joins.

5. Insert spike while turning right side out.

So, simple in theory, but fiddly in practise. It's very much the kind of patternmaking that requires you to consider planes and forms.

Newspaper report of the time....

GEORGE MACBETH MENZIES was one of the last survivors of a remarkable breed of men now virtually extinct - steel-foundry owners who appeared for work before 8am every morning, knew all their employees by name, and had the skills of metal casting in their blood...Personally, he was familiar with the highest standards of metal casting and patternmaking. Few employees knew their craft better than the boss. The products of Menzies's, later the North British Steel Foundry, went all over the globe, hugely to the advantage of the British Balance of Payments. They made castings for the engines of the liner QE2, for the Forth Road Bridge and for the North Sea oil industry. Menzies - Macbeth to his friends and business associates - was extremely proud that he was appointed OBE in 1978 for services to export.

Decided to measure the boys today.

I traced the dog from the Golden Standard's pamphlet, but the rest of the work is completely mine. :)

Well, will the help of Zachary and Henry, of course.

For completeness - the very last measurement should be 5" (not 3 1/2") and C-M is 9",

I'm not quite sure how to USE what I've collected, but I recently purchased a Patternmaking textbook that spends 900+ pages going into extreme detail of how to construct patterns (for humans) from scratch, so...

FWIW: I measured both dogs and took the larger value. I'm sure their ruffs and feathers threw my measurements off by more than any individual differences they might have.

Designed, patterned, tailored by me with contrast buttonholes and welt pockets.

How do you like this pattern with purple fluffy cat? Of course it's a naughty little pest, but sooooooooo cute! Meow!😻 The fabric with this pattern will be available soon in my shop on Spoonflower (link in bio).
