I purchased Design-it-Yourself-Clothes and quickly whipped up a few skirts. Then a month later I became pregnant with my second child and was disappointed that I would be back into my maternity clothes. Not long after I realized my error and started drafting again. I love this book!!! Thank you Cal Patch!!

I really, really don't want any fit problems with this pair of jeans (which are self-drafted), so I took the extra tedious step of stay-stitching all around every piece that had any curve to it. I recently made my first pair of pants and they ended up too big even though the pattern was drafted specifically to fit my figure — all because the fabric stretched as I sewed. Do your jeans patterns suggest taking this step? My teacher gives us no instructions on sewing the garments we draft for our patternmaking class, so I'm always figuring it out as I go.

here I;ve traced off all the original lines and made sure everythign lines up. This was a multi-sized pattern, so i made sure to follow the line in the size I wanted.
Much better than cutting it off in case I need to make adjustments or want to use another size later.
I've also labelled the new pattern piece with any pattenr markings (to line it up with adjacent pieces, and the grainline) and so I know which original pattern this piece belongs to. If I wanted to further customize it, I'd put the date and who I made it for.
Typically when you do garments of odd scrap pieces you already have, instead of buying new, is that it's almost never fabric enough for what you've planned. So now, instead of a circular denim skirt, I improvised and cut a odd-shaped kind of circular piece knowing it will drape in its own way. Everyday is a fun day!
Class: Patternmaking
Date: Fridays in February 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, & 2/22 (4 weekly classes)
Time: 6:00-8:00 each class
Location: Etsy Labs, 325 Gold Street 6th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
Description:
If you love to sew, but are frustrated by the patterns you
find in stores, this is the class for you. Here you will learn the basic principles of flat patternmaking, and start having fun designing the clothes you picture in your mind! You will draft patterns for a t-shirt and an A-line skirt (like those in the photos above) based on your own measurements. Then we will manipulate these patterns into other style variations. We will also cover how to 'rub off' a pattern from a pre-existing garment. Basic sewing experience is helpful to benefit from this class.
