Patrick’s bench in Golden Gate Park is completed. There was a small gathering yesterday at the bench to dedicate it and share stories about Mr. Wickham.
For those of you in the Flickr world who are curious about Patrick he was an amazing person – full of smarts and wit and spirit. He was also my husband for 5 years (calendar-wise it was slightly less than 5 but I claim 5 full years now) and my boyfriend for 7 years before that. We met in 1992 and lived in Minneapolis together. Our first date was Life is Sweet (uh, quite a movie for a first date – Mike Leigh pulls no punches) then he brought me back to his apt to meet his roommate Eric and share an espresso. And with that I was brought into his world of friends, movies, motorcycles, music and hi-jinx. We moved to San Francisco together in 1997 – the fun continued. Patrick was unexpectedly diagnosed with stomach cancer in August of 2003 and died in February of 2004. He was 36. Words always fail me trying to describe what he went through in those seven months – all I can say here is it was very, very bad. Worse.
One of the things Patrick liked to do in San Francisco was go on weekend rides in the city and through Golden Gate Park on his Yamaha V-Star motorcycle. I was lucky enough to be perched on the back of that bike for many of those trips. He didn’t live to see the new de Young museum but I think he would have really liked the modern lines and vibe. The bench that is now dedicated in Patrick’s memory faces the de Young and is on a somewhat busy pathway from the de Young to the Academy of Sciences building off of Music Conservatory and Teagarden Drive. I have seen people reading books on it, and surly teens riding skateboards nearby and families having a picnic. He would have liked that too. I hope you can stop by.
