Niagara Fog...

Digging through the archives I came across this shot from August 2016 when we had visited Niagara Falls, A sudden dense fog rolled in over the whole area socking us in with a thick white haze everywhere and the mist was so heavy you needed an umbrella to stay dry. this shot was going along Niagara Parkway east of the falls. The building in the background is the Sheraton on the falls Hotel mostly hidden from view bythe mist.

This barn appears to have been patched up many times over the years. The roof, the sides, the additions. It all makes for a unique look. The dusting of snow adds a nice touch as well!

(I'm back from a short break - slowly trying to catch up!)

Medium-sized songbird that produces one of eastern Australia’s most familiar rainforest calls. Olive brown above, with white throat patch contrasting strongly with black face, crest, and breast. Juvenile lacks white patch. Feeds on the ground, most commonly in dense vegetation of rainforest and other wet forests. Very vocal. Male sings “oooooo...doo-doo-doo–whipp!” and female responds “pew pew.” (eBird)

Heard frequently in rainforests of eastern Australia, we quickly learned the song. At O'Reilly's, they are very tame and would come to people for food. In fact, a few times they were too close to photograph, even with the 100-400mm lens. The main problem is that they love the deepest, darkest parts of the forest, so very noisy and dark originals. This photo has been significantly edited to bring out the bird from the gloom.

It is that time of year and the pumpkin patches are busy with families getting out to enjoy our lovely fall weather. I had to get out early yesterday to get a couple of shots before the crowds descended. Maan Farm Market, Abbotsford, B.C.

Having completed a brief stop after cresting the summit at Sand Patch, Pennsylvania, four second-generation geeps get a westbound pig train moving.

It was just a very ordinary walk in the same Helsinki suburb surroundings, still with patches of ice here and there, but sun already was shining warmer and friendlier than a couple of weeks ago. And then behind a turn of the path opened a view over a little bay, and sunlight fell on the tops of last year dropworts in so marvelous angle that all the scene was flooded with light... I deliberately let the flare come into the photo, because it reveals the feeling from that moment like fairies would be dancing in the branches and chasing the winter away. :-)

An Icy Winter Blast...

This week Southern Ontario got a real taste of winter; snow, freezing rain, mixed precipitation, sudden thaw and icy wet roads werefollowed by more snow and a sudden refreeze.

It may be treacherous for driving and dangerous for walking, but it is excellent for taking those wild winter photos. Today was just such a day; the freezing rain overnight made the ground a tad slippery and crusty. but the scenery was outstanding and well worth the effort to get out and snap a few photos.

Thank you for visiting for marking my photo as a favourite and for the kind comments,

Everyone likes to joke around that The Zed Patch has real zeds (zombies) in it; that they come out at night.

Is it real? Of course its a real place! Its just a dark, dead patch in the middle of the woods where nothing seems to grow.

But as for the zeds? Well its just a rumor but something must be said: people DO go missing out there; especially those who venture out alone.

So if you dare venture out to The Zed Patch at night, bring a flashlight, watch out where you're walking, and bring a friend.

After all, there are a lot of zeds...and they are hungry.

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus phoeniceus) - 20230516-06

Males are black with red shoulder patch that is sometimes concealed. Males have rusty feather edges in the winter. Females are streaked brown and often confused with sparrows. Look for long, sharply pointed bill. Often in flocks, especially in winter. Visits feeders. Breeds in marshes and scrubby, wet fields. Distinctive song, especially as migrants arrive in early spring. (eBird)

A proud male celebrates his vanquishing of the enemy found within the side mirror of a car. He fought that reflection for nearly five minutes, crammed in tight between door and mirror. His stance says it was all worth it.

A large, dark grayish brown kiwi with brownish streaking, often showing white patches on face. Restricted to native forest near Okarito in New Zealand, with small populations on predator-free Mana, Blumine, and Motuara islands. Often heard at night foraging as it sniffs loudly, tapping the ground for invertebrates. Male call is a series of clear rising whistles. Female call is a harsh throaty wail. Both sexes repeat their call many times, and sometimes call simultaneously. Could be confused with Weka by voice and shape; look for the kiwi’s much longer bill and lack of tail, and listen for its multisyllabic call. (eBird)

---------------

On the ferry to Blumine Island were two conservation officers who were taking two kiwis to a nearby island for release into the wild. During the trip, they brought out one of the kiwis and showed the fascinated passengers how the birds were banded and tagged with electronic trackers. The kiwi wasn't really impressed by all this handling, but the bander knew what she was doing and the job was quickly done. Before returning him to his travel box, the conservation officer showed him off to the enthralled passengers, most of whom had probably never seen a kiwi close up and in the daylight. I was absolutely thrilled!

A few days later, we heard a female calling at a mainland location, but did not see her so this was the only sighting that we had.
