The bordered patch, Chlosyne lacinia, is a highly-variable species. The pale orange band on the hind wing can be much more vivid and expansive. This butterfly was quite abundant around puddles in the road through Garden Canyon, on the Ft. Huachuca military base, April 17, 2010.

How exciting to discover Bloodroot in blossom this early in the spring! Our weather has been cooler than usual, but here are these tiny plants in bloom already.

 

We had never before seen Bloodroot growing in this area, just beyond the pedestrian bridge over Jackson Creek.

The Pumpkin Patch is located on Sauvie's Island just 15 minutes northwest of Portland, OR. From Portland, take Highway 30 west towards Scappoose to the Sauvie Island bridge. After crossing the bridge, circle to the left and loop back under the bridge, following Gillihan Road to the farm. Head straight 2 miles until you see our signs.

 

Market and U-pick: 9 AM - 6 PM, June through October.

Pumpkin Cottage Giftshop: 10am - 6pm.

Patio Cafe: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. 10am - 6pm.

The Maize: September-October.

Pretty flower patches in pale and deep blue

We see motorcycle patches like this one all the time! And considering many of our employees (including the owners) ride, we always enjoy designs like this!

Was attempting to capture the moment when the sun was just starting to shine through the clouds and illuminated this patch of ground while the surrounded area remained dark. Not exactly how I wanted it to turn out, but its alright.
