finds wonder even in potatoes. Another delightful PC Forum speaker interview (but I forgot my camera!). Read on to find why this photo is relevant.
Marissa Mayer joined Google, then about 20 employees, in 1999. She had recently earned her MS in computer science (after a BS in symbolic systems) and was still teaching part-time at Stanford; she spurned an offer from McKinsey to choose Google precisely because she felt less prepared for it the for a standard McKinsey career. With a degree in symbolic systems from Stanford, she had worked as a summer intern on a “recommender” system and felt comfortable with Google’s approach of using links to measure relevance, but she didn’t have much experience in business. Neither, of course, did her two new bosses. “Larry and Sergey simply yelled at me and Salar [Kamangar, now in charge of Google’s ad business], until we made the kinds of decisions they would have made,” she says.
Mayer grew up a mostly normal kid in Wausau, WI. Everything was nearby, yet nearby was still usually a car ride away. “I remember when we were having a big argument about making a baseball diamond across a couple of yards, and nobody knew the exact dimensions: Was it 88 feet between bases, or 90? It would have taken half an hour to get into the car, go to the library, find a book… so we just argued all afternoon… It was 30 minutes then, versus 30 seconds now.”
As director of consumer Web products, Mayer is responsible for the basic consumer-facing Google.com site, including search, news, images, Froogle and local/maps. But she’s not overly focused on day-to-day things. Basic search still has room to grow, she believes. “I think of all the searches I leave unsearched each day; I may do only one out of ten that I think of. I may be more likely to think of them, but I’m also more likely to do them given my job,” she says. “For example, I’ll go home after a dinner with Yukon potatoes on the menu and search to find out the difference between Yukon Gold potatoes and regular potatoes. You just have to make it more convenient. “
It’s not just the hidden Web she has in mind, but the ability, say, to visually scan someone’s badge at a conference and immediately see a bio – discreetly – on your cell phone. We like that idea … now imagine it applied, for better or worse, to someone you encounter randomly in a restaurant or at a bar.
Currently, Mayer sees the appeal of local and all the new services that are hot right now, but she’s trying to get Google to think longer-term. She says, “You have to ask yourself, ‘Will this happen in search someday?’ If the answer is yes, then it’s something we’d better be working on.”
She cites one user study in which users were asked to do searches using keywords about things that concerned them. One harried mother innocently typed in “discipline teenage daughter” with results that will be unsurprising to anyone familiar with the Web, but which failed to address the woman’s questions around homework time, allowances and dress codes. Although Google has since mostly fixed that problem, says Mayer, “We need to get better not at doing searches, but at providing the answers people are looking for. There will be a day when 10 HTML links regardless of who you are is not the answer anymore.”
One of a few shots I'm uploading of a Cotswold Wedding photographed back in August. For this I climbed up on the wall and shot into the sun using flash to fill in the shadows.
As I've explained previously, as part of an ongoing challenge to myself I been trying to step outside the relatively narrow confines of my normal photographic subjects. In conjunction with my wife, a part-time portrait photographer, we undertook our first Wedding for paying clients. I've photographed most of my friends weddings but somehow getting paid for it raised the stakes considerably . In the end we got some good shots and the Bride and Groom went away happy customers. Somehow we seem to have already agreed to do several more next year.
This Steam Fair which is has held every year since 1969, when it was established. The venue is enormous and takes a great deal of energy to walk round the whole site, be warned. There are people carriers ( a tractor and trailer ) that can transport you around the show ground if you don’t feel like walking everywhere. I have covered this event in 2013 / 2014 and again in 2016.. The 2013 visit was a hard work for me after having open heart surgery that year.
Steam engine exhibits, vintage vehicles, heavy shire horses and rural crafts are on dsplay here each year. Working rural displays on a 600-acre site including old time steam funfair. Widely recognised as the leading event of its type in the world with over 2,000 exhibits, 800 trade stalls and over 220 full size steam engines. The show ground is one of Europe's largest outdoor event locations.
For the first 15 years of its existence the steam fair then known as ~ Stourpaine Steam Fair ~ was held at Stourpaine Bushes, then in 1985 it temporarily moved to nearby Everley Hill, following a land dispute. In 1988, after 3 years at Everley Hill, where access by large crowds was difficult, it moved to its current permanent home at Tarrant Hinton, north of Blandford Forum, where access is vastly improved.
A great attraction at the show is the display of traction engines and steam rollers performing the work for which they were designed. Such displays include heavy haulage, threshing, sawing logs, ploughing and road-making. The main arena of the show is purposely sited on the slope of a hill to allow both steam- and internal combustion-powered machinery to demonstrate their capacity for heavy load hauling. One of the main displays is the ~ Showman's Line up, in the vintage fairground section, which is thought to be the largest collection of showman's engines in the world.
Since 2003, the show has contracted its own radio station, Steam Fair FM, broadcasting 24 hours daily from the Saturday prior to the show, to the Monday following – 10 days in all. The station, which is also streamed on the Internet, covers show news and views, weather and other relevant information with plenty of listener dedications and a format of Vintage Hits. During the event, the station is advertised on roads in the surrounding area and provides traffic news for drivers using the A354 Blandford to Salisbury road that passes the show site. The car park is vast and uses the fields of the farmers it’s a novelty riding over mown grass hearing the cut corn crackle beneath the wheels but great for anyone with a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
With 1,000 trade stands, 2,000 exhibitors and their families, together with our campers on the public campsites ( 5,000 caravans and tents ) it is estimated that the population living on site amounts to 25,000 people at any one time. The food sold here is from all over the world and people can sample the delights of culinary delights from sausage rolls to Thai cuisine. The entrance fee is not cheap but offers can be had before the event by pre~booking, I got my tickets for the 2016 event at the Bournemouth Air Show and were on offer for two tickets or more.
An army of workers distribute and collect the 2,500 litter bins on site and 180/200 tonnes of rubbish is taken away each year. Each year there are more than 300 paid staff and volunteers working during the five-day show period.
Each year we have 360,000 promotional brochures printed, 65,000 car window stickers and 50,000 posters. These are printed 10 months before the show and then distributed over the next few months all around the UK and to overseas destinations.
Due to planning regulations, actual site preparations do not begin until only 2 weeks before the event commences and we have just 10 days to clear the site afterwards and put it back to a working farm.
Over 2 miles of water piping is laid and over 3,100,000 litres of water is used during the show each year! 2,100,000 litres are used by the engines alone, along with 1,000,000 litres used for domestic and drinking purposes. 750,000 litres of all the water is brought onto site by tankers with a full time team of 6 workers during the show and for a week before.
Over 10 miles of electric cable are used with over 100 floodlights erected and 200 socket outlets placed. 30 large generators have to be hired each year and just one generator is powerful enough to supply electricity to a small village. Electricity has to be provided to 6 entertainment pavilions, 4 shower blocks and other marquees and to our administration and emergency services centre. they have 3 full time and one part time electricians on site.
Spc. James R. Malpino (middle), a public affairs broadcast journalist with U.S. Army Africa, performs a skit in “Random Laughter,” an adult comedy show. Malpino’s latest acting in a short skit named “Check Please” led him to win second place for Best Male Leading Actor during the Installation Management Command-Europe One Act Festival in Kaiserslauten, Germany. For as long as he can remember, Malpino has been involved in all aspects of theater, to include acting, playwriting, stage managing and directing. Malpino’s previous performances include “The Wiz” and two comedy improvisation shows . Currently, Malpino is rehearsing for “Celebrate Christmas,” the annual holiday show in Vicenza, Italy which will give him the opportunity to dabble more on the musical side of theater. People like to do different things to relax on a Sunday morning - stay in bed reading the papers, visit Church, go for a walk in the country, maybe a trip to the local pub for a carvery ... or perhaps dress up as a Superhero ...
Full name: Trina Serena Fazzini
Age: 19
Hometown: Laguna Beach, CA
Occupation: Heiress to the Fazzini Shoe empire, certified socialite, part-time designer, full-time rich bitch.
Hair Color: Deep brown.
Eye Color: Deep brown.
Personal Style: Classy, but with an edge. Trendy, but one of a kind. My signature staples are my long, long, LONG hair and some always-killer Fazzini shoes, of course ;) You could maybe get them at Symone's, on sale obvi.
Why I should make it Into TMI: Someone needs to set an example for these poor, unfortunate-looking girls. I mean, eeeeeiou :s Did you SEE the one pretending she's related to my gurl London? Or that fat-headed cheese hair girl with MY name? We'll call her "The ugly Trina". With my fabulous sis Trini and the Fazzini name behind us, I honestly don't see how I could lose! Other girls are here just to model, and that's cute (with their looks and all), but they don't understand what it means to be a TRUE icon like I do, and like Dotti did in Star School. I want to be a strong, fierce and independent leading female across the board. Not just last season's catalog cover girl. I'm a lethal combination of ruthless powerbitch and expertly-styled fashionista and I really don't care what it takes to get me to the top! Watch out, ladies, Trini and I are ready to stomp you all out. ;)

HUMPHREYS GARRISON — About 70 second graders from Humphreys American School received a behind-the-scenes look at how Exchange personnel bring movies to the community each night, Jan. 13, in the Post Theater.
Following the tour, the children were treated to a small bag of popcorn and watched the animated movie, Megamind.
“We did this a few years ago, in 2007, I think,” said Cho Hyok, theater manager. “Principal (Joyce) Diggs asked if we would be willing to do this again. We would like to make it an annual event.”
After arrival, the children were divided into three groups, which were rotated through stations where they learned how movie-style popcorn is made and how the projectionist loads a movie reel so that patrons can view the movie.
Chong Se-yong, manager of the Humphreys Pizza Hut and a theater veteran, explained to the children how the popcorn was made and that it usually took about four or five minutes for each kettle to pop. She did a batch for each group that went through her station.
Son In-pae, a part-time projectionist on hand to explain that portion of the mission, said “The children had a lot of questions and were very interested in how the projector shows the movie.” He explained to them how each reel has about 20 minutes of movie on it and that they can look for the dot in the right hand corner of the screen to see when it was time to switch reels.

On April 1 1918 the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) merged to form the Royal Air Force (RAF). The RNAS was the flying wing of the British Navy and the RFC was the flying wing of the British Army. The RAF was independent of both the Navy and Army and reported directly to Britain’s Air Ministry.
New Zealander’s served in both the RFC and RNAS before continuing on their service with the RAF during WW1. The government assisted two private schools to train pilots for the conflict. The Walsh brothers flying school at Auckland was founded by Leo and Vivian Walsh—pioneers who had made the first controlled flight in New Zealand. In 1916 Sir Henry Wigram established the Canterbury Aviation Company at Sockburn, Christchurch, and purchased Caudron biplanes from Britain for pilot training. At the end of the war many New Zealand pilots stayed with the new Royal Air Force and several had attained high rank by the outbreak of World War II. Others returned to New Zealand and, serving part-time, provided the nucleus of the New Zealand Permanent Air Force (NZPAF).
Shown here are lists of names of some of the New Zealander’s who served in the British air force units and an image of the Canterbury Aviation Company circa 1917 at Wigram in Christchurch.

Knute Rockne, head football coach at Notre Dame, joined the Studebaker sales department in 1927 as a part time promotional speaker. This picture was a Studebaker publicity shot, which shows the coach on the practice field with a 1927 Dictator. In the background is Cartier Field, home field for Notre Dame Football through 1929. In the 1920s, Studebaker Corporation contributed significant funds to the school's endowment, football ticket orders and other advancements of the University. On March 31, 1931, twelve days after he was rumored to be leaving coaching for a full time $10,000 per year sales position at Studebaker, Rockne was killed in a plane crash in Kansas. A rainy day visit to the Holyhead Maritime Museum.
Saw several memorials outside before I went in, so had to get those first!
The Holyhead Maritime Museum is a maritime museum located in Holyhead, North Wales.
Housed in what is claimed to be the oldest Lifeboat station in Wales (built c. 1858), it houses a number of collections.
The lifeboat station opened in 1858 and the first lifeboat was unnamed, launching 18 times, saving 128 persons. Replaced by the Prince of Wales, she launched 38 times and rescued 128 persons. In 1875, Member of Parliament Joshua Fielden and his brothers donated the Thomas Fielden, named after their father, which necessitated extending the house. In 1890, a second large boat was obtained, for which the house was extended to enable beach based landing from a horse-drawn carriage.
After local maritime exhibitions were held in 1982 and 1983 elsewhere, a trustees group was formed on 24 September 1984. The trustees obtained a nine-year lease on the redundant St Elbods church from the Church in Wales, with the museum opened officially by the Duke of Westminster in March 1986.
On expiration of the lease, and after failing to agree a lease within a new development, Stena Line offered the museum a peppercorn rent on the renovated Lifeboat house at Newry Beach. Deciding to improve the building through the construction of new visitor facilities, after a successful bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a renegotiation of the lease to 99 years, the museum reopened on its current site in 1998.
The museum today tells the maritime history of Holyhead and Anglesey, from earliest days to the modern ferries to Ireland. It features an interactive combination of historical artifacts, models and sensory exhibitions. All of its part-time volunteers have extensive maritime and local knowledge. Accessible to wheelchairs, the museum has its own cafe, the Harbour Front Bistro.
The Holyhead at War exhibition is located in an air raid shelter located alongside the Maritime Museum.

The Maryland National Guard's 1729th Field Support Maintenance Company established a new platoon size detachment and hosted an open house at the armory in Cheltenham, Md., on Saturday, Aug. 16. The 1729th detachment is a dual-gendered unit for nearly 40 full-time and traditional part-time members. This will give more opportunities for both men and women to serve in the Guard in Prince George's County.
“This is good for the Guard for two main reasons,” said Col. Sean Casey, the brigade commander of the 58th Troop Command. “We’re giving women in Southern Maryland more opportunities to join, which will enhanced our recruiting efforts. Also, during state emergencies, having a maintenance unit in the Southern Capital region will provide more equipment and personnel that will improve our ability to respond in this area.”
The unit has opportunities for anyone who qualifies in a variety of military occupational specialties to include; mechanics, machinists, welders, electronics, communications and many others. The readiness center is currently home to Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 158th Cavalry Regiment, an all male combat arms unit.
During a quick ceremony the detachment was presented their guidon and their Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Charles Blomquist gave them the news that they would be going to the National Training Center in two years.
“It’s quite the honor to be selected to train with the best and it’s not going to be easy, but I know that this unit is up to the task,” said Blomquist. “I have all the faith in the world in this unit; you have never let us down.”
The unit invited family and friends to the open house to see the static displays of military vehicles and equipment and play on the rock climbing wall.

Fernando Hernández, a Hayward-based educator and artist, has exhibited surrealist mixed media sculptures throughout the Western states. In association with the East Bay Big Read of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, Fernando Hernández demonstrated bronze casting techniques at the Hayward Main Library on April 17, 2010. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute for Museum and Library Services in partnership with Arts Midwest.
Fernando Hernández was born in Mexico City in 1968, and he lived in Mexico until he immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1984. 1984 is also when he first started making art in a serious manner. He has been a resident of Hayward since 1986.
Fernando Hernández received his MFA from Washington State University in Pullman in 1996 and taught ceramics at California State University until 1998, when he quit to become a freelance sculptor and educator. His mixed media sculptures, consisting of odd, surreal juxtapositions of symbolically charged elements with veiled references to genetics and science have been exhibited throughout the West Coast.
In 1998 he was awarded an Artist in Residency from the California Arts Council. He started working as an educator in local high schools teaching bronze casting and installation workshops. He has continued this work to the present day, often working through grants and in collaboration with local art organizations.
After the residency was over in 2001 he resumed his teaching career by becoming a part-time visiting lecturer teaching sculpture at Diablo Valley College. He currently teaches sculpture at Chabot College.
Starting in 1998 he redirected his artistic efforts towards installation work, often working in collaboration with other artists, students and community groups. The installations, relatively small at the beginning, became more complex over the years. His current and ongoing installation project is called The Columbarium. It is a collaborative project that involves dozens of artists and hundreds of high school and elementary school students.
Originally meant to be a one-time exhibit, Fernando Hernández and collaborating artists have evolved and exhibited The Columbarium more than six times. Although the number of participants and membership of the project fluctuates, it could be said that most participants in any given year have participated in the past. Because of this a small community of friends has evolved that come together seasonally to set up the installation. In 2002 he named this group the East Bay Art Collaborative.

The waiter and waitress on the right are volunteers from the local handicap center. When I initially approached the woman in the middle, she waved her hand in front of her face and then disappeared. I thought, "Hmm, okay, that was odd," but hung out and tried to read the menu. After a bit, she returned with another woman, on the left in glasses, in tow. "She cannot speak," said the new woman. "Ahhh," I said.
See, if I were a liberal crybaby blogger I would have run off to work, complained about the 'xenophobic' waitress and the Japanese, and then that evening blogged, "Oh my God, I got blown off by this xenophobic waitress in Japan today. Let me tell you what happened!"

Why Jamis Bicycles?: Jamis is a family owned company that has been around for over 40 years. They use only name brand parts that have been raced tested in each of their categories to give you the highest performance. The bicycle are design crafted to give you the exact ride you demand. They are niche use models that excel in the category they were designed for. For over 30 years we've been designing and manufaturing bicycles unmatched in their performance, value and style. Jamis Bicycles. The Power of Design.
MAKE AN IMPACT
Blame it on the economy and the accompanying back to basics mentality. Or praise public awareness of green issues and the value of low-impact lifestyles. But all of a sudden bicycles are a Very Big Deal. Everyday people--folks who haven’t been on a bicycle in years, if not decades--have suddenly rediscovered the thrill of cycling. For us, passionate cyclists who strive daily to deliver products that get people of all ages, abilities and aspirations to love bikes and biking just as much as we do, it doesn’t get any better than that.
The bicycle is a marvelous invention, with an impact that is almost completely, one hundred percent positive. For individuals (exercise!) as well as for the environment (reduced carbon footprint). A bike is one of the world’s most powerful instruments for change. We know because cycling forever changed our lives, and we’ve seen it change the lives of so many others. That’s why we want to make cycling converts out of everyone, and that’s why there’s a Jamis for nearly every cycling arena, for almost any rider.
It’s that passion for cycling and everything cycling can do that fuels and sustains our efforts to build the best possible bikes. It’s why we build category-defining superbikes that put professionals atop podiums at road races and mountain bike events. It’s why our computers are humming day and night crunching FEA data and carbon fiber lay-up simulations. It’s why we devote precious R & D resources to making even our kids bikes and cruisers as light and easy to ride as possible. And why our 2016 lineup is clearly the best we’ve ever produced.
But we’re at this not just to build better bikes. We’re in this to build better lives, to make YOU better. That’s pretty heavy. It’s a lot to carry on two wheels. But that’s how powerful a bicycle can be. And that’s why we’re so committed to building the best bikes possible.
When people ride bikes, good things happen. Experience it yourself, on a Jamis.

Ed Knueppel, from Sussex, Wisconsin, found an unusual approach to making time during the pandemic: Moving to work after dark. “As the Covid-19 Pandemic unfolded in March 2020, the state of Wisconsin issued a “Safer at Home” order. This caused my employer to rapidly switch to having almost all employees telework all or part-time. I volunteered to switch to a third shift work ‘day’ to improve coverage as an essential worker. This resulted in much of my railfanning time being during the dark night hours and early morning as I returned home. As summer rolls by, I find myself back working full time during normal hours. I’ve noticed that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, I have continued to find ways to railfan and have not lost any enthusiasm towards the hobby. The state is opening back up but I continue to railfan alone and certainly miss the camaraderie of the Duplainville area railfans.”

City leaders and representatives from the Neighborhood Cinema Group celebrated June 21 the opening of a multi-million dollar, 10-screen theater at 1050 Powder Springs St. The theatre, which includes stadium seating, 3-D and surround-sound technology, is the only cinema in the city. It is expected to create 40 to 50 regular part-time jobs and several full-time management positions.

With Miriam I had a discussion. She thinks that housewifes are old women, like her mother. She's not a housewife she sais. She has a husband, two children, and her husband does as much as her. As a partime housewife, she also has a partime job. She for me is an example of a young modern woman, who grew in the Western world. made choices that suit her, and was able to make the choices. We will see her in a couple of years back, and I hope for her, that the husband still is happy to help part-time. But, if you look at the laywer Carla in my series, she has the same kind of situation. Mayby its the new way in the Netherlands: highly intelligent women, who share the household for 50% with their husbands. I don't know, we will see. I can't predict the future for western women.
Part-time home from the Autumn of 1980 to the Summer of 1982 by which time it had become a bit of a student ghetto.
The flats were actually quite comfortable and I used to enjoy walking round the decks in the evening; no doubt protected by being such an innocent!
The purpose of this inquiry is to consider the funding of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Wales, the financial impact of the Welsh Government’s tuition fee grant policy on HEIs and students in Wales, and whether the Welsh Government is delivering value for money in this area.
The new part time Higher Education funding policy does not come into effect until 2014 and therefore this enquiry focuses on full time Higher Education funding.

Commander Alastair Denniston was operational head of GC&CS from 1919 to 1942, beginning with its formation from the Admiralty's Room 40 (NID25) and the War Office's MI1b.[12] Key GC&CS cryptanalysts who moved from London to Bletchley Park included John Tiltman, Dillwyn "Dilly" Knox, Josh Cooper, and Nigel de Grey. These people had a variety of backgrounds – linguists, chess champions, and crossword experts were common, and in Knox's case papyrology. The British War Office recruited top solvers of cryptic crossword puzzles, as these individuals had strong lateral thinking skills.[13]
On the day Britain declared war on Germany, Denniston wrote to the Foreign Office about recruiting "men of the professor type".[14] Personal networking drove early recruitments, particularly of men from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. Trustworthy women were similarly recruited for administrative and clerical jobs.[15] In one 1941 recruiting stratagem The Daily Telegraph was asked to organise a crossword competition, after which promising contestants were discreetly approached about "a particular type of work as a contribution to the war effort".[16]
Denniston recognised, however, that the enemy's use of electromechanical cipher machines meant that formally trained mathematicians would also be needed;[17] Oxford's Peter Twinn joined GC&CS in February 1939;[18] Cambridge's Alan Turing[19] and Gordon Welchman[20] began training in 1938 and reported to Bletchley the day after war was declared, along with John Jeffreys. Later-recruited cryptanalysts included the mathematicians Derek Taunt,[21] Jack Good, Bill Tutte,[22] and Max Newman; historian Harry Hinsley, and chess champions Hugh Alexander and Stuart Milner-Barry.[23] Joan Clarke (eventually deputy head of Hut 8) was one of the few women employed at Bletchley as a full-fledged cryptanalyst.[24][25]
This eclectic staff of "Boffins and Debs"[26] caused GC&CS to be whimsically dubbed the "Golf, Cheese and Chess Society",[27] with the female staff in Dilwyn Knox's section sometimes termed "Dilly's Fillies".[28] These "Dilly's girls" included Margaret Rock, Jean Perrin, Clare Harding, Rachel Ronald, Elisabeth Granger; and Mavis Lever – who made the first break into the Italian naval traffic and later, along with Margaret Rock, solved a German code.[29] During a September 1941 morale-boosting visit, Winston Churchill reportedly remarked to Denniston: "I told you to leave no stone unturned to get staff, but I had no idea you had taken me so literally."[30] Six weeks later, having failed to get sufficient typing and unskilled staff to achieve the productivity that was possible, Turing, Welchman, Alexander and Milner-Barry wrote directly to Churchill. His response was "Action this day make sure they have all they want on extreme priority and report to me that this has been done."[31]
After initial training at the Inter-Service Special Intelligence School set up by John Tiltman (initially at an RAF depot in Buckingham and later in Bedford – where it was known locally as "the Spy School")[32] staff worked a six-day week, rotating through three shifts: 4 p.m. to midnight, midnight to 8 a.m. (the most disliked shift), and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., each with a half-hour meal break. At the end of the third week, a worker went off at 8 a.m. and came back at 4 p.m., thus putting in sixteen hours on that last day. The irregular hours affected workers' health and social life, as well as the routines of the nearby homes at which most staff lodged. The work was tedious and demanded intense concentration; staff got one week's leave four times a year, but some "girls" collapsed and required extended rest.[33] A small number of men (e.g. Post Office experts in Morse code or German) worked part-time.
In January 1945, at the peak of codebreaking efforts, some 10,000 personnel were working at Bletchley and its outstations.[34] A substantial percentage of personnel at Bletchley Park, 75%,[34] were women; among them were Jane Hughes who processed information leading to the last battle of the Bismarck; and Mavis Batey and Margaret Rock, who were credited for the Abwehr break.[35][35] Their work achieved official recognition only in 2009.[36] Many of the women came from middle-class backgrounds[36] and held degrees in the areas of mathematics, physics and engineering; they were given entry into STEM programs due to the lack of men, who had been sent to war. They performed complex calculation and coding and hence were integral to the computing processes.[37] Eleanor Ireland worked on the Colossus computers.[38]
Rozanne Colchester was a translator at Bletchley Park. She worked there from April 1942 until January 1945 mainly for the Italian air forces Section.[39] Like most of the 'Bletchleyettes', she came from the higher middle class, her father, Air Vice-Marshal Sir Charles Medhurst, being an air attaché in Rome. Before joining the Workforce of the Park, Colchester was moving in high circles “she had met Hitler and been flirted with by Mussolini at an embassy party” writes Sarah Rainey. She joined the Park because she found it thrilling to 'fight'/work for her country.[40] Cicely Mayhew was recruited straight from university, having graduated from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford in 1944 with a First in French and German, after only two years. She worked in Hut 8, translating decoded German Navy signals.[41]
Ruth Briggs (later called Mrs. Oliver Churchill)[42] worked within the Naval Section and was known as one of the best cryptographers. She was also a German scholar. wikipedia

For seven years, you have marched on May Day to celebrate and invigorate migrant justice struggles in Toronto. On International Workers Day, we march to build a Solidarity City. Solidarity City is a unified struggle for: Respect for Indigenous Sovereignty, Status for All, an End to Imperialism and Environmental Destruction, an End to Austerity and Attacks on the Poor and Working class, continued resistance against Patriarchy, Racism, Ableism and Homophobia and Transphobia
Pipelines, tankers, mines, and so-called development projects are being forced onto the lands of Indigenous nations. Harper, like every Prime Minister who came before him, refuses to respect the sovereignty of Indigenous peoples and continues to neglect his treaty obligations, as seen in Omnibus Bill C-45. In the face of this and more, land defenders across Turtle Island continue to resist in powerful and inspiring ways. As we look towards an exciting summer of action and resistance fueled by the Idle No More movement, this May Day let us honor all ongoing decolonization struggles and commit to continuing our support for Indigenous sovereignty.
The past year has seen the implementation of C-31, dubbed the Refugee Exclusion Act, further criminalizing migrants and expanding the detention and deportation machine. Jason Kenney announced the creation of a designated countries of origin, a racist, two tiered system under which refugees get fewer rights based on their place of birth. This past November, many of us honored our communities and confronted Minister Kenney when he showed up in Toronto. On May 1st, let us take to the streets to build community alliances and resistance once again.
Exploitative temporary worker programs continue to expand and many migrant workers continue to meet deportation, injuries and in some cases death. Workers are being forced to pay thousands of dollars to get jobs in Canada for which entire families go in to debt, yet no provisions exist for status on landing. Since Harper came into power, over 72,000 people have been locked up in immigration detention. In December we rallied in solidarity with security certificate detainees Mohammad Mahjoub, Mohamed Harkat and Mahmoud Jaballah and all those locked up in immigration detention. This May Day let us take to the streets to end detentions and deportations and to call for freedom to move, freedom to stay and freedom to return!
On February 21st, Toronto City Hall reaffirmed its promise to providing services to residents without full immigration status. We will continue to build a Solidarity City where communities work together to ensure justice and dignity for all residents. The history of Access Without Fear in Toronto is a long one and on May Day let us march to celebrate our victories and commit to continued struggle.
In the face of austerity, climate destruction, colonial and capitalist wars and interventions here and across the world that push people out of their homes, let us fight for status for all. Status for All is the struggle for self-determination, just livelihood, housing, food, education, healthcare, childcare, shelter, justice and dignity for all people, with or without immigration status.

Steam engine exhibits, vintage vehicles, heavy shire horses and rural crafts. Working rural displays on a 500-acre site including old time steam funfair. Widely recognised as the leading event of its type in the world with 2,000 exhibits, 800 trade stalls and over 220 full size steam engines. At over 600 acres, the show ground is one of Europe's largest outdoor event locations. Established in 1969, for the first 15 years of its existence the steam fair then known as ~ Stourpaine Steam Fair' ~ was held at Stourpaine Bushes, then in 1985 it temporarily moved to nearby Everley Hill, following a land dispute. In 1988, after 3 years at Everley Hill, where access by large crowds was difficult, it moved to its current permanent home at Tarrant Hinton, north of Blandford Forum, where access is vastly improved.
A speciality of the show is the display of traction engines and steam rollers performing the work for which they were designed.
With 1,000 trade stands, 2,000 exhibitors and their families, together with our campers on the public campsites (5,000 caravans and tents) it is estimated that the population living on site amounts to 25,000 people at any one time.
Total number of people expected to see the show is in excess of 200,000.
Each year over 200 tonnes of coal are used.
Over 560 barrels of beer were drunk at last year’s show.
80 tonnes of wood will be cut in this year’s wood sawing section.
16 acres of corn is cut before the show starts by an old time binder with 10 large ricks erected in readiness for the threshing demonstrations. The reed from the demonstrations is then sold to local thatchers who use it on thatched cottages all over Dorset and the neighbouring counties.
