The baby is saying "the last time I saw you, you were this high"

The house my Mom & Dad designed and built in 1967

The parent was tired, but the baby insisted on playing. It was cute to see how devoted this parent was, cuddling the baby and plaing with it for awhile.

Children love their parents to be consistent as they are able to predict how they will act. A consistent approach to discipline helps put kids in control of their behaviour.

breakfast with mingus

when i was young

my father looked through me

i don’t doubt that he saw through me

but that’s not what i mean

no

he sat directly opposite me at the table

he put butter and golden shred on his toast

and i ceased to exist

with each sip of tea

each mouthful of food

my lack of existence was silently screamed at me

aged thirteen

full of hormones and certainty

i vowed that i would never do that

now i figure i’ve been doing it for thirty years …

looking through loved ones

why didn’t he explain

would i have listened

i still remember that first breakfast

wholemeal toast and coopers marmalade

eyes fixed forward through the steam

of hot black coffee

there

right in front of me

was charlie mingus

(forget that charles stuff - that came later)

he had this kinda coy smile

yeah man life is shit but you stick with it y’hear

i munched a little more

and nodded my head without moving

while a transparent daughter stuck pins in a model me

after that i never ate alone

i had wordless chats with a host of people

kerouac was in the habit of popping round

he’d smile when i hit the highway

and be there for breakfast

in crowded cafes on the roadside

between where i was

and where i thought i wanted to be

it’s a long list

holden caulfield

martin eden

the famous five

(one at a time please - dogs welcome)

vonnegut was a regular

along with herman hesse

stevie smith drew droll cartoons on invisible napkins

dali taught me to look at the bigger picture

(and to decide for myself what size to make it)

the pooters let me laugh at the day ahead

just about everyone sat across that table from me

all the times

all the minds

that meant (or lent) anything to me

came by now and then

i guess my dad’s guests

were different

but doing the same job

they’d tell him how to drop that fly

right on a rainbow’s nose

or where to find the woodcock

tell him

how to get along

share his solitude

without getting in his way

my visitors still arrive …

the famous

the fictional

the brief encounters

one comes more often than most

he’s a grey-haired guy

with a beard

and an x-ray stare

sometimes i greet my father

sometimes i just dismiss my own reflection

or smile

because

after all these years

there is

so little difference

Building relationships within families lead to positive and enduring change for children and families. Little Angels Family Childcare Home, an Early Head Start site in Kissimmee, held a parent engagement activity recently with the help of the Orlando Science Center.

secret #3

I'm not a very good parent

I don't have the answers

I don't have the right emotions

Sometimes I get embarrassed

sometimes I get defensive

when we are in public and things go bad and people start looking at me like i am the worst mother in the world.

Then I have to remember it's not about me, it's not about how I feel....

but it's hard...I used to be the one everyone called up and asked parenting advice

now they step back and stand with their arms folded shaking their heads... I can hear them sigh and tsk tsk and say things like "it's a shame"or "that poor girl"

or worse is when they tell me out loud what they think :(

There was a funny minister. He even wore a Garfield tie.

Shraddha's parents at their home in League City. This pic is a reflection in a mirror. The flash was bounced off the ceiling, pointed backwards. I was pleasantly surprised to see it worked well.

The lighthouse itself was a bust, but the gardens outside it were gorgeous. And I love this picture!
