On October 24-26 2014, The University of San Francisco invited parents and family to join the USF students for a fun Parents & Family Weekend on the Hilltop Campus.

Some birds, like the brush turkey, just abandon their babies to raise themselves. The other end of the continuum has the helicopter parents, the ones never away from their babies. You see this trait strongly in wood ducks.
Somewhere in between were the parents of this dusky moorhen chick. After the absence of birds, this little one just appeared out of the reeds. A couple of adults were away in open water; looking after themselves. Sure, there was a constant chatter of what I suppose were contact calls from this baby. But apart from that they were making their own plans, going their own way; feeding themselves.
In time, the two adults from the open water swam across closer to what was presumably their chick and just in time for another three to emerge from the reeds; family reunited.
I know helicopter parenting is all the rage. I also wonder if the constant management isn't putting at risk the opportunity of the offspring to plan, recognise and manage risk. They'll have to one day, so building those skills now, like this little one, has a lot to recommend it.
