User-controlled site selection and identification of persistent urban form adjacent to the site.

Slide 5

Chick 'n' Egg Chair is a lightweight seating furniture made entirely from corrugated cardboard.

It was designed and developed at the Chair of CAAD, ETH Zürich.

The form was completely 3D modelled in McNeel Rhino and then further processed in Grasshopper. The parametric setup allows the piece to be rescaled to any desired size, resolution and material strenght. Although the chair was initially designed for kids it can easily be adjusted. So far two versions have been cut and built - one for small children and another one for grown ups.

The algorithm to compute the necessary cutting paths is relatively simple. The 3D model is scanned and a simple grid projected onto the surface. This grid is extruded to meet the desired material strenght and then intersections and connection slots are determined. The resulting parts are arranged on a flat surface and can be processed on a cutting plotter. This method can be used for any continuous surface and will adjust automatically.

The program was then developed further to improve comfort and stability of the chair. Now the second set of slizes lies perpendicular to the center line of the model which leads to a more homogenous seating surface.

Exploration in 3D Form making via non-traditional methods

Using parametric 3D modeling techniques, Caliper Studio developed this complex design into buildable form. Once complete the model was used to extract geometries for custom rolled steel pipe framing and eggcrate lattice fabricated in our shop and installed in 2008.

Some of the activities and kiosks were obviously aimed at young children due to the summer holidays and I hope these are removed as soon as possible.

Just a parametric bench from different points of view... ;)
