Let me first apologize to everyone that was at the flickr meet up today. As most of you know I have Bipolar II and suffer from panic attacks (henceforth known as THINGS , THEY or THEM ).

These attacks are unpredictable and, unfortunately, often completely unstoppable.

The meds that I take every day have helped to reduce the frequency of these attacks. But, they aren't magic pills.

I showered & dressed without incident. As I was pulling my hair back, I felt it.

If you have never had a panic attack, it is almost impossible to fully convey what they are like.

Your body goes into a sort of fight or flight mode. Flight ALWAYS wins.

So today, there I stood, practically ready to leave & suddenly, I had to be in my bed, NOW, where it was safe. Safe from what? I wish I knew.

Your mind runs wild. Suddenly, I wasn't going to a lovely park to meet with friends. I was going to this BIG PLACE! ALONE! TO WALK INTO THE WOODS! WITH STRANGERS!

Yes, I am completely aware of how absurd that sounds. Even in the middle of one of these THINGS I still have a rational voice in the back of my head. Today it said, "don't be so stupid, what is your problem? just GET IN THE CAR & GO".

But I can't. I can't leave my safe place until the panic slowly eases away.

Now comes the really crappy part of the whole process. Reality returns & I am slapped in the face with a flood of emotions. I feel stupid for being afraid of something that was, in reality nothing. I feel angry for not being able to make it just stop. I feel embarrassed for being so weak.

But the worst part may be this; these THINGS take away so much of my life. They have made me miss: work, dinners with friends, weddings, funerals, family gatherings, and too many other things to list. THEY take away pieces of my life that I can NEVER get back. And I hate THEM for controlling even one minute of my life.

Have you ever felt like you're going nutty?

i have no idea why anyone would take these things recreationally. they slow my mind, rob me of all motivation, and cloud my recollection of my most precious memories. every one i take feels like a failure of the spirit.

I'm going mad!!!!

How very general.

those damn panic attacks

I first started photographing graffiti in 1999, and in 2000 I setup a website to share my photos. Initially a mix of different subjects, but it soon became almost entirely of graffiti. I uploaded over 6000 photos to this site. Eventually Flickr came along a few years later and I started using that instead, and stopped updating the website. I shut it down completely a few years ago.

I occasionally get requests from people for photos of pieces by specific graffiti writers, and I thought it might be a good idea to upload them all to Flickr.

Most of these photos were taken on film, scanned, and saved at a small size, back in the day when people were still using 56k modems to connect to the internet and small filesizes were desirable. So apologies for the quality and size for some of these. Someday I'd like to get them all scanned in again at a higher resolution.

Maintaining the Shield (deflecting depression) is an image that portrays the onset of depression. In the peripheral view a seemingly innocuous cumuli of tiny black particles begin to gather. They swirl and dance in the air like a noxious cloud of negatively charged electrons. Eventually the choking fringes of an acidic wave drift gently inwards. Within this murky cloud the metaphoric atoms of fear eventually reveal themselves, as they roll and settle into the mind like a fine mist. Looming blacker, they morph into particles of panic threatening to engulf all feeling, killing emotion, replacing memory with a numb abyss. No two people are the same, yet for all who experience the onset of mental darkness, it takes great bravery and training to recognise the signs of onset, to banish the cloud before it can envelop, to take control. To attempt an explanation of the unpredictability of its onset, in varied semblance, can lead others to doubt its very existence, which is devastating for the mind that is fighting this internal battle. Time, patience and determination are key to building a defensive enclosure that can filter in happiness yet block the spectre of destructive negativity and self deprecation.

This is not so much about me actually having a nightmare, as it is about the insane feelings of anxiety I get sometimes. The closest thing I can get to describing the feeling of desperation & helplessness is this:

Imagine you're in a car, and the doors are jammed, the accelerator pedal is stuck, and the brakes don't work. You're heading for a ravine and about to go off the side. Right before you go over the edge, you can see the bottom, and you can still feel that gravity isn't *yet* causing you to plummet to your death, but you have that sick feeling knowing that it's only a matter of time.

That's the feeling I get sometimes, for no apparent reason.

Since I've been managing my stress better, it hasn't happened as much, but on days when I haven't slept well, there's a higher probability.

likeasuperball (10:41:16 PM): idk if i've told you but i have this problem

likeasuperball (10:41:23 PM): i don't hang my clothes up or put them away ever

likeasuperball (10:41:30 PM): i fucking pile that shit up

likeasuperball (10:41:45 PM): my hamper, filled with clothes. my desk, clothes. my top drawer, clothes.

likeasuperball (10:41:48 PM): all piled

likeasuperball (10:41:52 PM): so i basically lose clothes

likeasuperball (10:43:05 PM): i threw away so much and still... uh so much.

likeasuperball (10:43:11 PM): all these clothes are HOT

likeasuperball (10:43:22 PM): these are all clothes i buy for myself!

likeasuperball (10:43:32 PM): i just pile them up and pick avorites and then lose them

likeasuperball (10:43:45 PM): the pile eats them!

likeasuperball (10:43:51 PM): and then i forget i even own these clothes

Lee's parents and grandmother are coming up today and staying the night with us, so I had the task of removing the dogs' plethora of treasure under the bed.

Among many miscellaneous dust bunnies, I found a blanket that was perfectly spread out. Why haven't they been making our bed?

But I digress. This isn't about the dogs. This is more about having company. I'm better about it now, but before I was first diagnosed with agoraphobia, I wasn't the best hostess.

Just as I didn't like to stray too far from my home, I also didn't like others to visit from far away. I had a hard time sleeping when I knew someone else was in the other room.

And what if I got sick while they were visiting me? I'd have to tell them to leave because I couldn't stand being around people when I was feeling ill.

I've hurt people with this disorder. My mom came up for Christmas and I was having panic attacks. I asked her to drive home, alone, to Houston on Christmas Eve night. She plead with me to stay.

I hate that vision. I feel bad about that, along with the countless other friends and family I've made excuses because I couldn't possibly tell the truth: I am having panic attacks and can't be around anyone right now.

I am a little nervous right now, but I know we'll have a nice visit. Now if I can only train my dogs to start making the beds.

The pixies newest creation!!

This is what you give someone after they've been in shock and the emergency has passed. This is what you feed someone too steeped in grief to open the dams of repressed emotion and allow it to be purged. This is what an anxious stress-ball like me, a chronic fretter, needs to add to a cup of warm milk and water before bed on a cold and snowy night when it seems there is no Spring to be had!

Motherwort: sweet mother, loving intentions, good for nerves, calming palpitations, mild sedative, balances severe emotional swings due to stress, shock, and sorrow, directly invigorates uterine tissue, good for trauma recovery, good for pregnancy and post-partum depression

Lavender: good for relaxation, indigestion, nervous stress, antiseptic, good for insomnia, panic, helps with some migraines, helps control muscle spasms

Oatstraw: tonic for the heart and circulation, highly nutritious, fights panic attacks, soothes nerves, esp. good for illness/trauma recovery, mild sedative

These three create a potent combination of nurturing herbs!
