Panama Viejo, werd gesticht in 1519 olv de Spaanse gouverneur Pedro Arias de Avila. In 1671 werd de stad verwoest door de Engelse piraat Henry Morgan. Hier ziet men nog de ruïnes.

Drie jaar later werd de stad herbouwd 8 km meer ZW. In 1903 wordt Panama onafhankelijk. In 1914 was het Panamakanaal een feit en Panama werd een belangrijke internationale handelspartner.

Panama City strekt zich uit over een kuststreek van 20km lang aan de Stille oceaan.
