22 February 2022 is written as 22/02/2022 numerically and is, therefore, a palindrome as it can be read the same way forward and backwards. It is an ambigram as well because it is the same upside down!

Some sand goes westbound at Union Jct at the end of a March afternoon. With no Per Mar Security loitering at the Union Jct spot, I decided to sneak around the tie pile for a quick shot.

'What seed must I sow
To replenish this barren land
Teach me to harvest,
I want you to grow in my hand
Let's be optimistic,
Let's say that we won't toil in vain
If we pull together
We'll never fall apart again'

Recently while shooting I managed to drop the D200 25 or so feet onto concrete. Both the camera and the lens are now shipped to Nikon repair.
Since it appears that I would be out of a camera for roughly a month the acquisition of a new camera became important to me.
Enter a brand spanking new Nikon D700. This was the first shot. It was shot at 6400 ISO in available light just to see if that function really was as good as the press had stated. What do you think?
While wandering thru the funky stores on South Congress Ave in Austin, Texas we found an eclectic store called Maya. Anna here is the manager and with that multicolored hair was doing her part to "Keep Austin Weird". Anna was quick to tell me that her name was a palindrome. Finally that definition came to me, how I'm not sure.

At the Festival ROT in Frankfurt am Main in 2009, Alfred 23 Harth entered into a dialogue with the American composer Carl Stone, initiating the duo project GIFT FIG. The name itself, a deliberate palindrome, already suggested the mirroring and circularity inherent to their working method. Harth’s arsenal of wind instruments and reeds, live-processed textures, and small sound devices were fed directly into Stone’s computer, where they underwent real‑time transformation and fragmentation before being sent back to Harth, who re‑projected and re‑shaped the altered sound into the performance space via the PA. The set‑up created a continuous loop of acoustic input and digital output, a feedback ecology in which performer and processor blurred until authorship became almost indiscernible.
The encounter proved fertile. Around 2010, the duo constellation opened outward to include the Japanese guitarist Kazuhisa Uchihashi—known for his extended techniques and prepared guitar—and the New York percussionist Samm Bennett, resulting in The Expats, a quartet whose interplay stood at the intersection of improvised music, electronics, and global experimental traditions. The new formation allowed for a broader dramaturgy: Uchihashi’s wiry, metallic timbres and Bennett’s responsive percussive structures counter‑balanced Stone’s granular transformations and Harth’s visceral reeds. In 2014, this evolving network further broadened its reach with a tour through South Africa, where the duo GIFT FIG and, at times, the trio with Uchihashi, performed in a series of cross‑cultural encounters. These concerts underscored the project’s commitment to transnational mobility and exchange—reflecting, through its structure of mirrored and hybridized sound, the larger condition of being both rooted and displaced that gave the quartet its name: The Expats.

The symmetry in letters is quite interesting. Ignoring the details of individual fonts and looking just at the basic letter shapes we find that A M T U V W and Y are symmetrical about a vertical axis, B C D E and K are symmetrical about a horizontal axis while H I O and X are symmetrical about both. X is also symmetriocal about two diagonal axes while as a circle, O is symmetrical about an infinte number of axes. I tried to think of a palindrome to give me both a horizontal and vertical line of symmetry but the only word I could think of was MUM and even this was impossible as Bananagram only has 3 Ms!
Shot taken for Saturday Self Challenge 27/02/2021 - Palindromes .
Well this has been a challenge , firstly a case of choosing which Palindrome to use and then finding a shot to capture the word . I did have some ambitious ideas , but in these restricted days they were just not doable , even a passing helicopter flying low would have done but they are not so common these days .
So I have just dug out my tool box and pulled out my spirit " Level " , ( sometimes referred to as a Bubble Stick ) . So the word Level is my palindrome , but levels and leveling have played a big part in my life . Throughout the 1970s I was a land surveyor and of course the job involved a great deal of work determining the heights throughout the survey area . The theodolite , angles and distances looked after the plan area and the Level in conjunction with a staff looked after the elevations and heights above datum ( including making allowances for angled measurements ) . So , on my spirit Level is a virtual sticker of me in May 1974 trompsing over the Highlands of Scotland near to Dalwhinnie taking Levels in preparation to a major by-pass project of the A9 around Dalwhinnie .
For your amusement a shot of the virtual sticker in full is in the first comment box . Tis I stood by the Level jotting down the readings - the level is/was a Hilger & Watts , we used either Watts or Wild equipment back in the day (Wild pronounced
" Vilt " - something like that anyway ! )

Port-du-Salut is a Cistercian abbey built in the thirteenth century in Entrammes on an ancient crossing point of the Mayenne River. It was formerly known as Port Ringeard Abbey. The last monks left the premises during the Revolution to emigrate and the abbey was sold.
In 1802, Napoleon granted an amnesty to the emigrants and a community of monks who had moved to Westphalia reoccupied the abbey. They return with know-how in the field of cheese production learned in Darfeld in Westphalia. This is how the "Port Salut" was born, very quickly prized in Paris, and then throughout the France.
Unfortunately, the brand was sold in 1959 to an industrial producer who transformed the artisanal raw milk method into a mass production of pasteurized milk. The "Port-Salut" is then sold to the cheese factories "Bel" which transferred the production to many sites in Europe and the cheese factory of the abbey closes. In 2010, a small dairy production was relaunched by the Fromagerie Bio du Maine which brings together about forty local producers but I do not know if it continues today.

This one can get some seriously groovy moire effects when viewed in smaller sizes. I just like the way it seems to vibrate. Hope you're all having a grand old week.

The solitary abandoned cement wagon which had been languishing at Hackney Yards for months was recovered this morning.
70807 was dispatched from Canton at 0830ish to Hackney Yards in Newton Abbot and returned with the errant wagon as 6Z83 1210 Hackney Yard to Westbury.
I caught the unusual movement at my usual location of late whilst out doing my daily exercise walk. Although it was extremely sunny when I left home the clouds gathered 15 minutes before arrival. Still, the day was bright enough.
I chased 907 this past Wednesday and Thursday, and got an absolute dud of a leader on Wednesday in the form of GMTX 3055. Thursday's lineup was much better with NBSR 6318, GMTX 2226, GMTX 2233, and NBSR 6304. While I was optimistic that I might get the "new" SD70M-2 leading, I was more than alright with a painted SD40. I began the chase in Saint John, and broke off at St. Croix later in the evening. I shot 907 here the day before, and figured I should try it again, as the quartet of GMs waste no time approaching the first of two crossings on the Rooth Rd under sunny skies!

Ohio may not be "big sky country," but on the right day the skies here don't look half bad.
After being laid up for the past several days with back problems, I took a chance this evening and went out hoping for a couple trains in good light. With nothing happening on the Garrett side, I made a bee-line for South Deshler when I saw this guy get lined up. Little did I know it was an empty coal train with a pair of Super-60's on the point, not to mention 95% of the cars in the train were in the old white paint. Lucky for me, I was able to bag them twice more down around Leipsic as they held for a meet with Q272, but those shots will sit in the backlog for awhile.
Oh yeah, and the leader is a palindrome!
This bluetooth speaker was photographed upside down. The brand name is a ambigram and a palindrome.
