Trifels Castle

Built <1081

Rebuilt 1938-1989

The only inhabited castle in the Palatinate Forest.

The Christmas legend of Hans Trapp, the Cannibal Scarecrow:

Hans Trapp (Hans von Trotha), was a knight and the commander of the Palatinate's armed forces.

He took possession of two castles (Berwartstein and Grafendahn) that belonged to the Weissenburg Abbey.

When the Abbot of the Benedictine monks protested, Hans dammed up the nearby river and first deprived the Abbey of any water supply.

But he did not stop there, he released all the water at once and caused a massive flood in Weissenburg.

Because of this war against him, the Abbot turned to the Pope.

The Pope excommunicated the Black Knight because of deals with the Devil and banished him from Alsace.

After his death, his inheritance went to the House of Fleckenstein from the nearby Château de Fleckenstein.

This is where the legend begins.

In the Bavarian Alps, where Hans lived during his exile, he developed a desire to taste human flesh.

Finally he became the feared Christmas scarecrow: Dressed up in straw as a scarecrow, he waited on lonely roads for his victims,

which he then cooked and ate in the dark forests around the Berwartstein.

In the local Palatinate/Alsatian folklore, Hans is haunting this region to this day as the Black Knight.

And as the companion of Saint Nicholas, he marks bad children he plans to eat for his Christmas Eve feast.

You can really meet Hans Trapp every 4th Sunday of Advent in todays Wissembourg, where he appears accompanied by fire-eaters and sounds of drums and threatens to take bad children with him.

This photo is neither from a volcanic fissure on Hawaii nor a slot canyon in Utah. In fact it's from the German Palatinate Forest which is a great place for hiking but not exactly known for extraordinary sights. But at the Altschlossfelsen, a sandstone formation not far from the city of Pirmasens, the rocks begin to glow when all the circumstances are right. This phenomenon can be only seen in mid-April on a clear, sunny day when the sun hits the sandstone at just the right angle and the trees still have only few leaves, letting the sun shine through.

Last week I went to the Altschlossfelsen with fellow landscape photographers Michael Lauer and Alex Albiez and we were very lucky indeed that everything fell in place like it should. The only thing that I didn't anticipate is that there were so many other photographers there as well. At some points it was very hard to shoot because you were in the line of someone else. But in the end I think everyone came home with some nice photos of this rare phenomenon. And maybe it will help a little bit making the Palatinate Forest become better known.

"Virgin Jump": The legend says that long ago a virgin was chased by a man, who wanted to steal her innocence, and ended up on the edge of that rock. She didn't hesitate and jumped. The wind blew up her skirts and she slowly drifted down as if hanging on a parachute.

The 2024 photography moment I will remember for a long time:

Standing on a medieval castle ruin, in the middle of nowhere, near the border between France and Germany, overlooking the Palatinate Forest and the Northern Vosges, and photographing the Perseid meteor shower, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Northern Lights at the same time.

Never expected to see this, and even less did I expect to see the Northern Lights several more times this year, without leaving Southern Germany and Northern Poland.

This summer I kind of got addicted to Milky Way photography. There's nothing more impressive than looking at the sky, seeing it full of stars and realizing that many of them emitted their light thousands or even millions of years ago. This becomes even more impressive when you are standing around old castle ruins as I did here at castle Lindelbrunn in the Palatinate Forest together with Steffen Hummel. While this castle lasted a few hundred years during that time the night sky barely changed at all. People living in this castle must have looked at the same beautiful sky full of stars as we can do now.

However, compared to the night photos I did in the Black Forest I noticed that in the Palatinate Forest the Milky Way didn't come across as clearly. While it was still well visible with the naked eye it didn't look as crisp and detailed. Probably the higher elevation in the Black Forest and the smaller number of settlements with light pollution helps here. You can see some of this light pollution near the horizon here, glowing orange. This is something that certainly must have been different during the medieval ages. So maybe the castle inhabitants had an even better view of the night sky and the Milky Way.

"Dahner Burgengruppe" - Pfälzer Wald

There are four castles belonging to the "Dahner castles group", three of them (to see here) were built on the same rock but all were built at different eras.

When the strong floodlights of the castle were switched off at the beginning of the night, the atmosphere of the surrounding landscape, supported by the light of the full moon, changed abruptly.

(It's a bit ironic that it's me now who lights the castle:)

Last storms has knocked over a few of the pines up here, a big one of them lies uprooted and close behind to the tripod and blocked a bit the view.

It was also windy up here that night, which made it difficult to stand still for a few seconds in front of the camera, so I set again the ISO slightly higher.

To visit on the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate. It was planned to spend the night here in the forest to see the sunrise the next morning, unfortunately the weather changed and it rained all day long.

I've been waiting for a long time for this moment. And then it's here- a foggy sunrise in Palatine Forest(Rhineland-Palatinate). The location was chosen the day before. It should be Castle Wegelnburg in the southern Palatinate region- one of the most beautiful places in Germany. 2,5 hours of driving and 40 min uphill walking have been worth the effort. It was the most gorgeous view I ever saw in my life.

Our Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy over Altdahn Castle, Germany, 13th century - destroyed in 1689

I am still learning how to edit milky way shots. It's an exciting topic. Think this one looks more natural. 8000 ISO is incredible with the D750
