Sometimes even glowing mushrooms need a holiday from all those photographer wanting to take picture of them. A bench deep in the Palatinate Forest, Germany, is the right place to take a relaxing break.
Manchmal brauchen auch Leuchtpilze etwas Abstand von all den Fotografen, die sie fotografieren wollen. Eine Bank tief im Pfälzer Wald ist da der richtige Platz zum Entspannen.

It is a rare occasion that the Palatinate Forest, which borders the western edge of the Rhine plain, is covered in snow. I was lucky enough to capture one of these magical sights with my camera.
A day later, the snow had already melted away again.
This was the first mushroom of the season that I saw. We were hiking in the wonderful Palatinate Forest close to the french border.

The blooming Mehlinger Heathland in the Palatinate Forest, Germany on a dreamy foggy morning.
Die blühende Mehlinger Heide im Pfälzer Wald an einem verträumten Nebelmorgen.
This place looks really beautiful und quiet. And it really is if you travel there early in the morning on workdays.
Otherwise you have to make your way through the crowd.
When autumn turns the world into colorful wonderlands I take a walk to this bench, enjoying the morning´s magic.
Wenn der Herbst die Welt in ein farbiges Wunderland verwandelt, besuche ich diese Bank im Pfälzer Wald und genieße die Herbstmagie.

The town of Annweiler am Trifels is under a dense cloud cover. The illuminated Trifels Castle, the Asselstein rock pinnacle and the peaks of the Palatinate Forest are sticking out of the cloud cover.
The castle is well known as the prison where Richard the Lionheart of England was held for at least three weeks in 1193.
However, the castle looks different today after the reconstruction during the Nazi era than in the time of Richard the Lionheart’s captivity.
The only inhabited castle in the Palatinate Forest.
The Christmas legend of Hans Trapp, the Cannibal Scarecrow:
Hans Trapp (Hans von Trotha), was a knight and the commander of the Palatinate's armed forces.
He took possession of two castles (Berwartstein and Grafendahn) that belonged to the Weissenburg Abbey.
When the Abbot of the Benedictine monks protested, Hans dammed up the nearby river and first deprived the Abbey of any water supply.
But he did not stop there, he released all the water at once and caused a massive flood in Weissenburg.
Because of this war against him, the Abbot turned to the Pope.
The Pope excommunicated the Black Knight because of deals with the Devil and banished him from Alsace.
After his death, his inheritance went to the House of Fleckenstein from the nearby Château de Fleckenstein.
This is where the legend begins.
In the Bavarian Alps, where Hans lived during his exile, he developed a desire to taste human flesh.
Finally he became the feared Christmas scarecrow: Dressed up in straw as a scarecrow, he waited on lonely roads for his victims,
which he then cooked and ate in the dark forests around the Berwartstein.
In the local Palatinate/Alsatian folklore, Hans is haunting this region to this day as the Black Knight.
And as the companion of Saint Nicholas, he marks bad children he plans to eat for his Christmas Eve feast.
You can really meet Hans Trapp every 4th Sunday of Advent in todays Wissembourg, where he appears accompanied by fire-eaters and sounds of drums and threatens to take bad children with him.
The Buchkammerfels rock formation on the Heidenberg (german: pagan mountain).
Inside of the rock formation there are man-made chambers, also called Heidenkammern (german: pagan chambers) of unclear origin. It is assumed, that they existed before 1523.
It is possible that theye were used as a hideout for precious goods from the nearby Drachenfels (german: dragon rock) castle, as a observation post, or as the castle’s prison.
The last time they were used during the Second World War, to this day remains of undergrounds bunkers are visible around the rock formation.

That protects us and helps us to live.
