The highest situated castle ruin in the Palatinate Forest.
The shape of the Wegelnburg reminds me of a battleship when seen from above.

This rock castle near Busenberg in the Palatinate Forest is called Drachenfels (Dragon´s Rock). A number of stairs carved into the sandstone take you to lofty heights with superb views. Once you have climbed the last tower, which can be seen in the picture, you will find a trough carved into the stone, which was probably intended as a water reservoir during sieges. But the people of the Palatinate just have a penchant for the fantastic and think that with this view, a dragon would certainly have fun splashing around in this stone trough. :)
This photo was made in the Palatinate Forest, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany.
Getting up at night was really worth it. Love the result, especially of the manual lighting of the rock formation
Yesterday it was so beautiful, a day for a hike and today all is gray...

A foggy autumn morning in a sweet chestnut forest in the Palatinate, Germany. In the foreground are pine trees, in the background the sweet chestnuts trees change color in all imaginable shades of ocher and yellow.
Located in the border area with France, beautiful, you can go all the way to the top and then have a great view.
The first sunlight feels its way over the mountains of the Palatinate Forest and nestles against the wisps of mist that billow around the trees.

I'm back from a small vacation which was great but didn't allow me to take any landscape photos. So it has been some time since I last uploaded a photo here. But now finally the weather and the fall colors seem to be just right and hopefully I will be able to take lots of photos in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime this photo from my archive is a reminder of the great opportunities the Palatinate Forest offers during fall. In the background you can see the Trifels castle -- taken from more than 20 km away. You might need to view this photo in fullscreen to see the tiny looking castle which almost seems to blend into the landscape around it.
This is another picture which I took during a tour to the Wegelnburg a couple of months ago. It was a very special morning with a breath-taking view over the Palatinate Forest as seen in my two previous photos. While most of the pictures I took that morning showed a wide view I also noticed that the rising sun created some dramatic interplay with the lifting fog. So this created one of the rare opportunities where my telephoto lens came in handy. Usually it just sits idle in my photo bag. But here it really helped me to emphasize how the warm of the sun slowly helped to cut through the fog.

I already uploaded a more intimate view from this special phenomenon last year. I never saw the first lights from the rising sun lighting up the forest so brightly so I want to share another, wider view with you. It shows the hills of the Palatinate Forest as the rising sun just pushed through a sea of fog below the hills. This light lasted only for a few minutes and the scenery changed constantly. Even though the scenery was absolutely spectacular and I've never witnessed it before, I've been told that if the conditions are right you can see this phenomenon regularly during fall time in the Palatinate Forest. So I'm looking forward to go there again in a couple of months.
