Le soir du 25 mai 1887, au cours d’une représentation de Mignon (opéra-comique d’Ambroise Thomas), la salle Favart prend feu. C’est une véritable catastrophe : des centaines de victimes, une salle en ruines. À Paris, mais également dans toute l’Europe, c’est l’émotion. La Ville de Paris rend hommage aux victimes de cette soirée par une cérémonie à Notre-Dame puis un monument dédié au cimetière du Père Lachaise. C’est aussi toute une page d’histoire des spectacles qui brûle avec la salle : construite en 1840, elle a vu la création de La Damnation de Faust (Berlioz), Mignon (Thomas), Carmen (Bizet), Les Contes d’Hoffman (Offenbach), Lakmé (Delibes), Manon (Massenet)… autant de titres emblématiques du répertoire de l’Opéra Comique.

On the evening of May 25, 1887, during a performance of Mignon (comic opera by Ambroise Thomas), the Salle Favart caught fire. It’s a real disaster: hundreds of victims, a room in ruins. In Paris, but also throughout Europe, there is emotion. The City of Paris pays tribute to the victims of this evening with a ceremony at Notre-Dame then a monument dedicated to the Père Lachaise cemetery.

It is also a whole page of spectacle history that burns with the hall: built in 1840, it saw the creation of La Damnation de Faust (Berlioz), Mignon (Thomas), Carmen (Bizet), Les Contes d' Hoffman (Offenbach), Lakmé (Delibes), Manon (Massenet)… so many emblematic titles from the Opéra Comique repertoire.

Henry Mobsby designed and supervised the Queensland court in the Australian pavilion at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. The exposition was held to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. Before the expo closed the Queensland Commissioner retired and Henry Mobsby was appointed the Acting Commissioner in Charge by the Queensland Government. He was also appointed by the authorities of the Exposition to act on the Jury of Awards in the Wine Section, for which he was awarded a medal for Special Services. While in America, he gained a Diploma and Medal for photography, and also a Certificate of Efficiency in motion picture work.

"What is Being Done to Cope With Forest Insects, Research, and Technical Direction.

At Portland, Oregon, is located one of the four western forest insect laboratories of the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This laboratory is staffed with three forest entomologists, who are assigned the job of carrying on research work to develop methods of controlling the various insects attacking forest trees, shade trees, and forest products of the Pacific Northwest. Their assignment also includes giving technical advice to federal, state, and private timber agencies and to the general public on all matters dealing with forest insect control; and in cooperation with the Forest Service, National Park Service, and Office of Indian Affairs, conducting an annual survey of pine-beetle conditions and need for control programs in the ponderosa pine timber stands of eastern Oregon and Washington.

The location of the major projects of the Portland forest insect laboratory is shown on the accompanying map, labeled Figure 3."

A view of Ballygate, looking up towards the bell tower which adjoins St. Michael’s Church in Beccles. The postcard dates from 1909 whilst the modern comparison below it was taken in May 2010. This end of Ballygate has remained largely unchanged in the intervening years, although some of the old shops have now become residential properties. Construction on the bell tower is believed to have begun c1500.
