A view of Ballygate, looking up towards the bell tower which adjoins St. Michael’s Church in Beccles. The postcard dates from 1909 whilst the modern comparison below it was taken in May 2010. This end of Ballygate has remained largely unchanged in the intervening years, although some of the old shops have now become residential properties. Construction on the bell tower is believed to have begun c1500.

The top postcard of Thorpe St. Andrew dates from c1960 and was taken from the River Green looking across to the boatsheds of Hearts Cruisers. This was the yard which had been established by John Hart in 1878, later taken over by his son George and, subsequently George’s son Geoffrey. By the time this photograph was taken, the yard was under the ownership of Commander Ron Ashby and had been renamed Hearts cruisers. Commander Ashby bought a major shareholding in the yard in 1948 and he and his family lived aboard the ex-admiralty vessel “Morning Flight” which was moored on the island opposite the green. The yard was later purchased by the Richardson Group who continued to operate a hire fleet from here until 2002. The modern view was taken in May 2010 and shows that, although those boatsheds still stand, the river is a much quieter place without the bustle of hire boats and eager holidaymakers.

Description :
Day 22
August 21, 1954 – near Garibaldi, British Columbia
“The engine is a bright orange diesel, this is followed by a couple of oil tankers and freight cars, then come the two passenger coaches…and the last piece of the rolling stock is a flat observation car without a roof...It was a wonderful landscape—rather more like exaggerated Victorian prints of travels in Switzerland—and here it was true to life.” /
Jour 22

I don't want to bore anyone with a never ending description of the circuit. Just to say the received 198kHz from the tuned loop antenna is amplified by the first transistor, detected by the biased diode and further amplified by the following two transistors. Audio is developed across the 64 Ohm loud speaker.

"The original temple of Hayagriva-Madhava was destroyed by the Kalapahar [or Kalapahad, a legendary Muslim general of Mughal governor Sultan Sulaiman Karrani of Bengal], who also destroyed the temple of Kamakhya. The present temple, according to an inscription..., was rebuilt by King Raghudeva Narayana, son of Sukladhwaj, in Saka 1505 (1583 A.D.). When completed, it was consecrated by the sacrifice of numerous human victims. The king also endowed the temple with grants of land. The translation of the inscription reads: -
"There was a ruler on earth named Bisva Singh. His illustrious son, the most wise king Malla Deb, was the conqueror of all enemies. In gravity and liberality and for heroism he had a great reputation, and he was purified by religious deeds. After him was born his brother Sukladhwaj, who subdued many countries. The son of this Sukladhwaj was King Raghudeb, who was like the greatest man of the Raghu race: his glories spread out in all directions; the Lord of Kamarupa, in obedience to the order of the destiny, is the slayer of the wicked, who was like water to the flames of the fire of sorrow of the vast populace. Of the seed of Sukladhwaj, a king was born of the name of Raghudeb, who consoles innumerable persons and is a worshipper of the feet of Krishna; the king coming of age has a temple built on the hillock called Mani hillock in 1505 Saka [1583 A.D.]. The most skilled and efficient artisan Sridhar himself built it."

- "According to some historians, the King of the Pala dynasty constructed the temple in the 6th century. ... [T]he presiding deity is worshipped as the Man Lion incarnation of Vishnu by the Hindus." (Wikipedia)
