Redmond Heavy Hauling (2012-08-24)

Since Kemira makes deliveries at all hours, the company relies on PacLease franchises to provide flexible maintenance schedules and arrangements. Like the Kenworth T300s they replaced, the Kenworth T270s are under 26,000 pounds GVW, so they don’t require a commercial driver’s license to operate. That makes it easier for the ranch to hire or recruit new drivers as older drivers retire or new stores open.

Overland Park, Kansas-based petroleum marketer and transportation company CarterEnergy relies on its trucks and trailers to be in peak condition in order to deliver fuel to convenience stores commercial customers, utilities and municipalities in a well-timed manner. All of CarterEnergy’s leased tractors and tank wagons are through a full-service lease program from MHC Truck Leasing in Kansas City, the local PACCAR Leasing (PacLease) franchise.

Continental Floral Greens transportation manager Denny Anderson can concentrate his time and talents on delivering quality flowers and greens. PacLease takes much of the burden of running a fleet of trucks away from Anderson.

As the leases for the original Kenworth trucks Idaho Youth Ranch leased from Kenworth Sales Co.-PacLease neared the end of their terms, IYR director of distribution Gregg Crow had a new challenge for PacLease and Kenworth Sales Co. He needed to replace many of those trucks with new units that not only offered his drivers the comfortable work environments they had come to appreciate, but also helped them be more productive while saving the organization even more money.

Mike Danenault serves as the director of wholesale for Bulkley Valley Wholesale, a division of the Overwaitea Food Group LP and Save-On Foods. To supply the 5,500 residents spread out over a 900-kilometer radius, Bulkley Valley Wholesale relies on durable Peterbilt trucks leased through Peterbilt Pacific Leasing, the PacLease franchise in Surrey.

The Kenworth T270s Idaho Youth Ranch leases from PacLease feature a 26-foot long van body, which provides two feet of additional hauling space allowing drivers to pick up more donations per trip. Kenworth Air Glide Suspension offers a smoother ride to protect fragile donated items from breakage during trips to the warehouse and the store.

PacLease operators are on-call 24/7. Remote diagnostics available through Kenworth TruckTech+ and Peterbilt SmartLinq can tell PacCentral Call Center representatives if it’s safe for a driver to continue on to a nearby service location, or if the truck needs to be shut down immediately.

The nine new Kenworth T270s, which replaced older PacLease units, make a huge difference as the new trucks get better fuel economy compared to the trucks they replaced, as well as a 2-mpg improvement from the days Idaho Youth owned and operated its trucks. The additional room in the van body allows drivers to load one extra pallet of donations per trip. The liftgate also helps them load and unload more quickly at the distribution centers and stores, saving them valuable time and reducing the strain on their backs and knees.

After 50-plus years, Continental Floral Greens remains a family affair. The 86-year old founder, Larson Everett, (center) is still active and serving as an advisor. Sons Jim, (left), and Jerome, (right), now operate the 250-plus employee company. For the first two weeks of November, the Big Idaho Potato and the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree crisscrossed Idaho before heading south to Colorado and then eastward to Washington, D.C. The Big Idaho Potato Truck continues with the tour until it reaches Paducah, Kentucky, on Nov. 22, when it leaves to take part in other various holiday events while the Capitol Christmas Tree continues on its way to D.C. The liftgate is a foot longer than the ones IYR had previously used because it can tuck under the van body instead of folding against the back of the van. This allows drivers to unload the trucks directly into the distribution centers via the docks. The lift also remains level and lays completely flat against the ground making it easier for drivers to pick up heavy items and to move pallets on and off the truck when they visit the stores.

As a company celebrating its 90th year of business in 2018, fourth generation family-owned Consolidated Supply Co. serves as a wholesale plumbing distributor in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

When the driver swipes the card, coded with a specific vehicle, at the fueling station, a proprietary prompt on the fuel screen lets the driver enter the truck’s odometer reading and trip report number. An optional RFID tag – Smart Q – can be placed in the truck to get the prompt without having to swipe the PacFuel card. For those running reefer units, the RFID tag is placed near the refrigeration unit so that fuel can be recorded for that unit.

Charles Wodetzki, fleet manager for Kemira's manufacturing division, relies on the experts at PacLease’s franchises to help him choose the right components to offer drivers a comfortable and productive work environment. Driver comfort is also a key consideration since driver retention is so important in keeping a low annual turnover rate of 1 percent, he adds.

Chief operating officer Scott Danner relies on PacLease to provide his company quality Kenworth trucks under full-service lease. The trucks Liberty leases from PacLease include the two medium-duty Kenworth T270s with 16-foot refrigerated express van bodies behind him.

The truck’s Eaton diesel-electric hybrid power system integrates a transmission-mounted 60-hp electric engine, which can start moving the unit without using the diesel engine. The electric engine assists the diesel engine when the unit needs more torque and power for acceleration. The engine works with a frame-mounted, 340-volt lithium-ion battery pack that recharges every time the unit brakes to reduce speed.

MIdwest Floor Coverings acquires its Peterbilt Model 579s through a full-service lease from local PacLease franchise Jackson Group Peterbilt.

Marty Koellner of Rush PacLease in San Antonio provides Continental Floral Greens transportation manager Denny Anderson ideas on how to specify the company's trucks with components for maximum fuel economy. The fuel-saving components are on pace to improve fuel economy from 6.3 mpg to 7.3, which will save the company a projected $180,000.

Larry Bathe, the driver of the Big Idaho Potato Truck, enjoys driving the Kenworth T680 because it offers decent power to lug smoothly up and over mountain passes. Its engine brake allows him to walk down hills using the compression from the engine’s exhaust and it’s still very quiet. When he's not on tour, he drives a Kenworth T680 hauling liquid methane for Pocatello, Idaho-based Reed Hurst Trucking.

Many PacLease franchises operate mobile service trucks to give their fleet customers the option of having their trucks serviced on-site. This can be a big time saver, particularly if the fleets must pull trucks from their delivery schedules so trucks and drivers can be shuttled to and from the dealership or franchise's maintenance shop.
