Some of Stoneway Roofing’s straight trucks use side-mounted engine power take-offs to power 26-foot Hiab knuckle boom cranes and customized Cleasby conveyors. Plus, the knuckle boom crane and conveyor trucks use PTO sensors to monitor PTO use, which keeps the engine from being overworked. These spec’s allow the trucks to deliver supplies into job sites that can be challenging in which to maneuver because of narrow, crowded streets and overhead wires that power King County Metro trolley buses. The trucks are also specified with enough power to get up and down Seattle’s hills and to navigate stop and go traffic in the Seattle-Puget Sound area with full loads.

PacLease helps the West Coast operation of Lamonica's Pizza deliver about 1 million pounds of pizza dough each week, enough to make about 800,000 medium-sized pizzas. John Lamonica, president and CEO of Lamonica's Pizza, finds that full service-leasing with PacLease works well for his company because he can count on Inland Kenworth to maintain the trucks with no interruption to his operation. If Lamonica’s trucks need to be kept for longer periods of time, Inland Kenworth arranges for a loaner or rental truck that can help the company keep to its tight delivery schedules.

William Davis, national fleet manager for the Tropicana Division's direct store delivery unit, in front of the Chicago Pepsico building in Chicago, Ill. The hybrid trucks are equipped with a unique refrigeration system called Ultra Temp, manufactured by Kidron. The system allows PepsiCo’s Tropicana division to eliminate entirely emissions and fuel consumption associated with the refrigeration engine, through the use of a hybrid refrigeration system. The system draws power from the truck’s powertrain and stores it. Using that stored energy, it maintains ambient temperature in the cargo area within set specifications throughout the delivery route.

Work continues on a new floodgate along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The floodgate is designed to protect from future storm surges the same areas of New Orleans that flooded when Hurricane Katrina’s 30-foot surge struck in 2005. Lafarge North America poured the concrete for the foundations of the two swinging gates. The work is part of the Seabrook Floodgate Complex’s construction, which was delayed by flooding on the Mississippi River earlier in 2011. When it’s completed in 2012, the floodgate will protect the Industrial Canal, a large shipping canal near the eastern side of the city that connects Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River, from storm surges from Lake Pontchartrain. It will work in tandem with the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier several miles to the east, protecting some of the most vulnerable areas of New Orleans from future storm surges from Lake Borgne and the Gulf of Mexico.
