Took this just when I was leaving the Pacifica Pier and this bird flew towards me.

during my hike up Montara Mountain, which rises 1898 feet (579 meters) from sea level. It's part of the Santa Cruz Mountains which run along the Peninsula. On clear days you can see quite far in all directions, but with our unusually warm and dry winter weather there has been a lot of haze and pollution.

Pacifica Pier is a fishing pier in Pacifica, in western San Mateo County, California. The "L" shaped pier spans out into the Pacific Ocean for a quarter mile. Great for dungeness crab fishing. Its official name is the Rev. Herschell Harkins Memorial Pacifica Pier.

If it were all about the light, this situation would warrant the expression :-). To the south and east were huge gray blue clouds in the sky, to the west it had cleared and the lowering sun was casting warm light on the scene. I thought the combination of warm and cool light was rather fascinating.

Shot from Pacifica's Pier, a great place to get close to the waves and take unusual angles.

I couldn't decide which one to post, so I'm posting both of them.

i accidentally deleted my previous post...argh! has anyone done this before? haha!

here's a repost. =)

thanks deborah, 4pizon, kinsiekins and several others that stopped by earlier and left a comment.

Trailspotting: Pier To Peak (Sweeney Ridge)

Area: San Francisco Peninsula

Distance: 8 miles

Type: Out-and-back

Difficulty: Medium

Elevation gain: 1,800ft (from 0 - 1,800ft)

There are several ways up Sweeney Ridge, but you won't find this one in a guidebook, which is a shame because in 90 minutes you can go from surfer's paradise to hill-top Nike missile base overlooking the whole of the mid-peninsula from bay to ocean.

Starting out in the large parking lot by Pacifica pier, take in the sea air and warm up your hiking muscles on the beach, before taking off past Sharp Park golf course towards Mori Point. Hang a left, stay on level ground and eventually you'll hit Route 1, which you'll have to tackle by heading north to the crosswalk.

Once over the crosswalk head into the houses and bear right, leading to a signed path which in turn leads to a junction between Route 1 and a nursery selling orchids. Though there's nothing to tell you this, head up the hill and you'll find the Sweeney Ridge trailhead.

The trail from here is known as Mori Ridge and it'll lead you directly to the summit where you can take in the views before heading back down again. The trail is a little steep in places, but really nothing to worry about.

This is a particularly good evening hike, with the sun setting over the ocean and the city lights twinkling below.

The boy is totally resisting swim lessons. But I believe swimming is a life skill especially because we live near so much water. Any parents out there with swim resistant kids? How do you encourage them to go? #instalumtrip2 #pacificapier ift.tt/1oDqsg1

how about dogs, on skates. is that allowed, pacifica?

Borrowed a Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 lens for a day. Not only is it a lens with great color and sharpness and interesting bokeh, but it focuses fast. Really liked this kind of shot.

Dawn brought with it a negative low tide so I took the opportunity to get some shots under the Pacifica Pier. The morning overcast helped to diffuse the light.

A few color adjustments.

Thanks for stopping by!

I used the Twilight feature on my camera for this shot, and basically left things alone in Photoshop, since I wasn't happy with any of the adjustments in the color or contrast.

heimconcept: Pretty nice!

A look back at Pacifica from the end of Pacifica Pier.

I still am not sure how fast a shutter speed I need to stop the wave action -- faster than I was using, but it allowed a nice artistic effect. At the low end of Beach Blvd. the waves were crashing over the seawall with regularity, but here where the pier is only the highest spray was taller than the fishing pier.

The offshore winds make great rooster tails on the waves as they begin to break. This day was an added bonus, as the sun was just at the right angle to create rainbows in the plumes. Sitting on top of Mori Point, we just sat and watched these waves keep rolling one after another.

The municipal fishing pier in Pacifica, CA. I met a few of my photography buddies to shoot the fishing pier in Pacifica. As I drove in, I thought it was going to be a bust - foggy, but the weather held and got rewarded with a very nice sunset.
