Night time photography sure is fun!
Thanks to the Flickr photographers who have done this before (you know who you are!). You have inspired me to use the bulb setting.
Digital sensors are such an improvement over film for this type of work. Thank you astronomers for figuring out how to capture images with just a few photons.

The first real rain hit the bay area today and brought with it a few clouds. Sharp Park beach here in Pacifica.

Sunset peaking through the support beams of the Pacifica Pier just before New Year's. Taken with a Sony A7 and Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. I got splashed pretty good a few times taking this one! I tried a few exposure bracketed shots and had a certain look I had in mind, but I don't yet know enough about using Photoshop (I've used pretty much exclusively Lightroom until very recently) and blend modes to properly mix each exposure to allow me to have the long exposure and smoothed motion for the waves, but still proper exposure for the rest of the photo. That's something I will try to revisit in the future.
After dropping of the kids at 5:00pm, I didn't have time to drive anywhere far since sunset was at 6:00pm, so I decided to add an obligatory Bay-Area-photographer shot of Pacifica Pier to my portfolio. There were heavy clouds in the sky and it was raining on and off, so I suspected conditions were right for a decent sunset.
I parked my car, slipped on my calf-high rubber boots, and maneuvered my way down the beach just to the right side of the pier. As the waves swelled towards my position I wondered to myself, "Should I really be doing this?".
After a few minutes of running back and forth, retreating from the bigger waves, the clouds lit up with color and I decided to stand my ground behind this particular foreground rock. In this position I needed to periodically lift up my tripod to ensure my gear didn't get soaked.
On a side note, on the way home there was lightning in the hills and also marble-sized hail pelting my car. Quite exciting.
Single exposure with Lee 0.9 grad ND filter pulled down into the surf line, angled slightly clockwise.

Chit Chat Cafe at the Pier

Pacifica, CA
Every ripple on the ocean
Every leaf on every tree
Every sand dune in the desert
Every power we never see
There is a deeper wave than this, swelling in the world
There is a deeper wave than this, listen to me girl...

Just about ready to throw in the towel on our Dungeness Crab season in California but I still enjoy the fresh air and comradery...
Lazy yellow moon comin' up tonight
Shinin' through the trees
Crickets are singin' and lightnin' bugs
Are floatin' on the breeze...

The alarm obnoxiously woke up the entire family @ 0245 so I could get on the road early and beat the commute backup at the SFOBB (Bay Bridge)...got to the bridge around 0400 only to find out that 3 of the 5 lanes had been closed since 2200, the night before due to a wacko who abandoned his vehicle in the #5 lane and was sitting on the rail threatening to jump...to make a long story longer, I got to the Pacifica pier @ 0520 and proceeded to bucket 2 keepers when the pier police came and chased everyone off...
"Over the rail and into the pail"...
I'll have a rod and reel that's made of gold
The fish will always bite
I'll have a cabin by the lake
Shade trees will grow so high
There'll be crickets and birds to sing
When I'm fishing, fishing in the sky...

When the Pacifica Pier opened in 1973, me and my buddies couldn't wait to get off work and run out there to wet the lines...The pier has taken a beating in its 52 years and gets closed frequently during heavy surf...This is about halfway to the end and is as far as they will let you go now...at times, it feels like an earthquake when the waves pound against her...

I am honored to have done an interview and be the featured photographer on TIA International Photography's Blog today. Being a night shooter, I found a lot of Tosin's work very intriguing and inspiring. Tosin is the owner and photographer of TIA. After a few exchanges over facebook I ended up doing an interview for his blog. It will be the first interview I have done on my photography, so it was interesting to talk about my photos and experiences. Tosin, who I actually met up with a month back in San Francisco to go shoot, when he visited, is one of the nicest guys and an awesome photographer. It was a pleasure, only though we got fogged in on our shoot. I am humbled about all of the nice things he has said about me in his interview.
About this photo below. One of the questions he asked was about my favorite photo. This was the one I choose and you can read about it in the interview here: blog.tia-international-photography.com/2012/07/09/feature...

It's been a while since I've posted anything with HDR.... I think. I'd have to go look through the stream to be sure. I took this at the Pacifica Pier sometime last week. I like to mix processing because it helps me look at things differently when I'm trying to photograph something.
I posted a different non-HDR look on google+
Lots of action in the hood. Streets flooded, mega wave energy, sidewalk caved to the beach below. News crews. Winter.

The Pacific Ocean was a bit feisty this morning. I've seen the waves break over the back of the pier before but this is best so far this winter.
Please please please press "L" when you view this!!
I was really happy when I saw I got the shot. Right as the picture finished I was waist deep under water. I lucky lifted my tripod up and only a slight splash hit it my camera. I was completely soaked though. Also I stupidly had my iPhone in my pocket. It wouldn't stop playing music all night, and the speaker broke, the voice control popped up every 3 seconds and it was sending FaceTime calls to random people for a bit. Its starting working today thankfully!
