Baquiano Trail, Pacifica, CA

The actual quarry is the depression on the left side of the frame, where the bare rock is visible. HDR panorama from 40 frames. Pacifica, CA.

Just for fun I used my 10 stop filter on this.

One last burst of light before the sun went behind the horizon at Pacifica Pier. The items at the bottom left are old pipe holders. I thought they were kind of cool so I included them in the composition. (6 stop ND + 2 stop reverse GD)

I like the texture here in the water. Variety is the spice of life!

Last night was so pretty. I loved seeing the crescent moon set over the pier. This is one shot.

It's a pretty good sign that whales are in the area, when you walk outside your door and see boats lining up on the horizon. I am not sure who had the better view, me or the boats? This is a full frame shot from the Pacifica pier of a Humpback Whale lunge feeding,

The last few days have been mostly grey, but the ocean has been booming. The fish are running and Humpback Whales, birds and people are all trying to get in on the action. I took this shot of a Humpback Whale and various birds from the side of the road near the Pacifica Pier.

Birds in this shot include Common Murre, Heermann's Gull, Western Gull and Western Grebe.

Standing in the rain, watching the waves on Pacifica Pier, wondering if anything has been named more inaccurately than the Pacific Ocean. The pier goes out a 1/4 mile, and gets you right into the surf.

It was awesome seeing these little petrels in Monterey. When they were reported in Pacifica, I wanted to see them again since it was half the distance to Monterey.

The shooting was easier but the angle wasn't. But from the pier you could see their behaviors better. Pretty dang cool birds and such a treat to see them where you normally would not.

This is a great year for whales in my area and today was no exception. Here is one shot of a Humpback Whale scooping up a mouthful of bait fish. If you look closely you will see some that escaped being a meal. At one point, there were up to 4 whales right next to the pier.

Bay Area had a great sunset burn after a long boring period. I decided to try this popular pier since the setting sun was dropping right at the middle during this time.

This sunset burn was predicted by Yiupai sunrise/sunset forecast service.

Took a drive up the CA coast a few weeks ago, from Santa Cruz heading towards San Francisco. We ended up in the seaside city of Pacifica, 12 miles south of San Francisco.

This, and the next 5 photos, are from the Pacifica trip.

I haven't posted anything in 2 weeks--I have been so neglectful of my flickr site and my flickr friends. I started back at work last week after a whole summer of idleness. *sigh* Yes, I am still alive--I survived my first week back at work with my new crop of first graders. Unfortunately, being back at work now means that I will have very little time to spend on my photos, but I will try to check in a few times a week to see what you all have been up to! :-)

I would kill for this view every night. lol. :-)

A large wave breaking along the Pacifica coast during the day of the Mavericks Surf Competition. I took this shot from the Pacifica Pier. It felt like seismic waves when one of these waves hit the concrete pillars supporting the pier. 40 to 50 foot waves were reported at Mavericks...

Sunset under Pacifica Pier

Panorama of Sunset over Pacifica Pier

What an amazing place to finish off our night. Got there just in time for the finale of the sunset that we witnessed while driving over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Aiming for the wave, and the pigeon was an unexpected bonus, or not. Becky says the bird looks like it arrived via photoshop. Honest, it was just a fast shutter!

I just like all the movement in this one and the deep blue. A friend was visiting from Indiana and walked out on the pier with me. He left an ice storm the day before for some amazingly nice December weather on the coast.

I took a quick trip to the local pier at lunch yesterday. The fish were running, so the ocean was busy with birds, seals, whales and other life. I was told that I just missed a great white shark by 20 minutes, maybe next time.
