The fire damaged a large section of PA route 61, several attempts to fix the road were completed but ultimately the road was closed and rerouted a little further south. Since then it has become the art grounds for many. For some reason there are hundreds of penis's drawn everywhere. Groups marked the trip by placing the year they visited and others doing the same. While I was there people managed to get cars, 4-wheelers, and bikes on the road and drove up and down. Luckily it was a nice day and wasn't bad to just walk up and down it.

This was the second post-apocalyptic stretch of road Greg and I adventured to this year.
A view of Center Street (PA 61) looking east. The white sign on the tree in the background says PIONEER TUNNEL, which I think might refer to the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine tourist trap 2 miles to the south in the town of Ashland.

This old street sign assembly at the intersection of Center Street (PA 61) and Troutwine Street is the only one I saw in town. This likely dates back to when Centralia was an actual town.

[Obituary]
Rev. Charles E. Garst
Under the appointment of the Foreign Christian Missionary Society he came to Japan in 1883, and died in Tokyo, Japan, on the 28th of December 1898. His death was caused by empyema. His translation to the other life was one of triumph and peace. He was the pioneer of the Disciples Mission to Japan.
Mr. Garst was a student. He mastered the Japanese language as few men do. He was able to read the current native literature and was thus well acquainted with Japanese thought. He was thoroughly conversant with Japanese history.
Mr. Garst was a faithful evangelist. His waking and sleeping thoughts were of righteousness. He preached the gospel in every town and village north of Sendai. He believed in the ultimate triumph of the gospel over all nations. āWe unfurl the banner of the cross for victory not for defeat.ā
Mr. Garst loved the Japanese people. His commission was to save the people and he put his whole soul and life into his work.
He was loved by the people and had influence with the leaders of thought and with the statesmen of the Empire. He was a friend of every phase of modem reform. He died among the people whom he loved and for whom labored.

Tucked away in the woods off of PA 61 near Mount Carmel is the old Shamokin & Mount Carmel Electric Railway's Green Hill Carbarn. The railway ceased operation in the 1930's, but this building has been used by descendants of the railway continuously, most recently King Coal Tours. After the recent legal action against the owner, it is for sale. Anyone want a Carbarn?

I remember climbing this hill straight up many times in all kinds of weather!! This is before all the grafitti. The grafitti was covered by rocks and fill several years ago because it was dangerous from cave ins and gases from the mine fire.
Pennsylvania Route 487 is a 63-mile (101 km) long, north-south state highway running from PA 61 in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County to PA 87 (near its intersection with US 220) in Dushore, Sullivan County.

The town of Centralia was not the only victim of the underground mine fire. Just south of the city, a section of PA 61 was closed in 1994 after the roadway received damage from the toxic gases spewing out of the ground. Today, this short section of the highway has become a local tourist attraction, and this was one of the only pictures I took devoid of people.

Of greatest interest at this point is the section of PA Route 61 that's been cordoned off due to massive irreperable damage to the surface from the underground fire.
