This framed re-activated space invader is one of the many examples of space invaders from which I have never seen the original. It was a very hot day in Paris, temperatures up to 35° C.

Burning since 1962, the Centralia mine fire followed an anthracite vein southward about a 1/2 mile from where the fire started and caused the land to heave and shift under the highway, destroying it. In 1994 this four lane section of PA 61 was abandoned and bypassed by an two lane upgraded logging road.
Up ahead the road is cracked and gouged several feet deep.
The abandoned road is covered with graffiti. Some foul, some humorous, some insightful. Very much unlike the gang inspired "tagging" you see everywhere else.

All right, here's the story behind this find...after we picked up our Mini-Lalaloopsy Oopsie 3-Pack dolls from the Lehighton, PA Wal-Mart, we made the journey up to the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre areas of Pennsylvania. We did find a few new items at Wal-Mart like the exclusive seahorses, but we missed a BIGGER jackpot when someone else found these (and the Littles Mermaids) at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Levittown, PA! We took a wrong turn on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and went NORTH instead of SOUTH...what a disaster, imagine how pissed off we were to have missed out on this...
We were determined to fix this mistake. What a great way to make up for what happened by finding the Exclusive Littles Mermaid dolls at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Exeter Township, PA (for all you Bratz fans out there, this was one of the stores where we found the infamous Bratz Passion 4 Fashion Spring 2009 Sabina and Dresden dolls a few years ago)...
Because of this Lalaloopsy release, we decided not to visit the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre areas of Pennsylvania for any Bratz, Lalaloopsy, or Novi Stars hunting/shopping for the rest of 2013. We may decide to revisit them in 2014...until that happens, we're vacating that region of Pennsylvania, we're gonna focus more on the larger markets where Lalaloopsy sells well (as Scranton and Wilkes-Barre isn't a large market for the line and the stores up there have zilch in anything new)...

This photo is well over 100 years old. It probably dates from the 1870s. [The only facts about this tavern I have found is that it was originally built by a John Teitsworth and later bought by Daniel Jacob Stambach (1742--1847--dates approximate). It was located on the Old Reading Road/Centre Turnpike/old alignment of PA 61 and served patrons of the Northern Central and Philadelphia and Reading Railroads.] Anyone with any further information is welcome to add it to the comments.
Centralia is a borough in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. As a result of a 40-year-old mine fire burning beneath the borough Centralia is now the least-populous municipality in Pennsylvania with just 9 residents remaining. The borough once had seven churches, five hotels, twenty-seven saloons, two theatres, a bank, post office, and fourteen general and grocery stores. During most of the borough's history, when coal mining activity was being conducted, the town had a population in excess of 2,000 residents.
An exposed vein of coal ignited in 1962 due to the standard policy of burning the garbage on a weekly basis in the borough landfill, located in an abandoned mine pit in the southeast portion of Centralia. Attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, and it continued to burn throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Adverse health effects were reported by several people due to the carbon monoxide produced.
State-wide attention to the fire began to increase, culminating in 1981 when 12-year-old Todd Domboski fell into a four foot wide by 150 foot deep sinkhole that suddenly opened beneath his feet. He was saved after his older cousin pulled him from the mouth of the hole before he could plunge to his probable death. The incident brought national attention to Centralia as an investigatory group (including a state representative, a state senator, and a mine safety director) were coincidentally on a walking tour of Domboski's neighborhood at the time of his near-death incident.
Route 61 has been rerouted around the abandoned portion. However, the underground fire is still burning and will continue to do so for the indefinite future. There are no current plans to extinguish the fire, which is consuming an eight-mile seam containing enough coal to fuel it for 250 years.

Verksted, Kristiansand for Fosen Aktie-Dampskibsselskab, Trondhjem. Sjøsatt 02/11.
1906 Levert i februar. I rute på ytre Trondhjemsfjord.
1928 Kolliderte i september i Kanalen i Trondhjem med motorkutter fra Stadsbygd.
Skifte av hudplater og ny innredning i november ved Trondhjems mek. Verksted, Trondhjem.
1940 Beslaglagt 14/04 av tyske myndigheter. Omdøpt til BUSSARD. Brukt som vaktbåt.
1945 Returnert til eierne. Omdøpt til FOSEN.
1955 Omdøpt til FRØYVÆR.
1956 Solgt i januar for NOK 50.000 til A/S Transport (Eilert Østbø), Hundvåg/Stavanger.
1959 Nedrigget til lekter.

As you start walking the abandoned section of PA 61 leading to Centralia you see a four lane road that appears to be in good condition, except it's covered in graffiti. A product of local youth, the graffiti is a mix of foul, humorous, and insightful images and messages. Very much unlike the gang inspired "tagging" you see everywhere else. People left personal messages here, not just tagging their territory like a cat pissing on a wall.

Members of our group take a closer look at the shattered asphalt caused by the mine fire underground.
As you round the bend however, you immediately see something is very wrong up ahead. The ground is uneven, there are huge bulges, and in the distance it looks like there are cracks.

Exploring the Graffiti Highway in Centralia, PA. Over the years, the highway (PA 61) crumbled as the coal fires passed under it and the ground subsided.
The amount of distasteful and inane graffiti was astounding. What was even worse was the amount of discarded spray paint cans littering the sides of the road. It's shameful that visitors aren't more respectful of the people that still live in the area.
While you can't really see it, there was steam escaping from the cracks in the road here on abandoned PA 61. Sure proof the fire is still down there burning.

About a half a mile down the road from Centralia you'll find a closed off section of PA 61. The underground fire moved under this section of the highway causing the ground to buckle, crack, and heave. The section was bypassed in 1994, but this abandoned 3/4 mile section is still in relatively good condition, and covered in all sorts of graffiti. if you ever go to Centralia, I highly recommend you walk the deserted section of PA 61. You'll get a good laugh from it.
There are many warnings of what you'll find up the road!

No, this doesn't have anything to do with yesterday being Valentines Day!
Stephani had a lot to say on abandoned PA 61. There were a number of her inspirational messages there. You can also see her signature on the upper edge of the photo.
