PA-61 in Centralia, PA. This section was closed due to fissures and heaving from the mine fire under the town.
Yes, 6.1 liters is less than 7.2, but 425hp net is way more than 375hp on a stand. Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals, July 12, 2014.
The fire damaged a large section of PA route 61, several attempts to fix the road were completed but ultimately the road was closed and rerouted a little further south. Since then it has become the art grounds for many. For some reason there are hundreds of penis's drawn everywhere. Groups marked the trip by placing the year they visited and others doing the same. While I was there people managed to get cars, 4-wheelers, and bikes on the road and drove up and down. Luckily it was a nice day and wasn't bad to just walk up and down it.
Abandoned PA 61 looking south. As you can see, after about 17 years of being unused, lots of overgrowth has taken place.
Pennsylvania Route 61 is an 81.14 mi (130.58 km)-long state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The route is signed on a north-south direction, from U.S. Route 222 Business in Reading to U.S. Route 11 and U.S. Route 15 in Shamokin Dam. PA 61 meets up with Pennsylvania Route 54 in Ashland and these highways split just outside of Ashland. PA 54 goes towards Mount Carmel and PA 61 heads towards Centralia.
PA 61 was assigned in 1963, comprising the section of the decommissioned U.S. Route 122 from Sunbury to Reading.

Centralia was once a coal town in East-Central Pennsylvania. In the 60s, a bonfire somehow managed to spread down to the nearby coal mine, causing the entire town to evacuate. What was once a town of thousands now only consists of about 7 or 8. The zip code has been revoked and little evidence of the town remains. The fire will continue to spread for hundreds of years and has reeked havoc on a local state highway. The road had to be diverted and a wonderful abandoned strip of PA-61 provides a hellish scene.

I stopped by Centralia, PA again. I spent much more time here in June of 2007 exploring and taking photos. I didn't stick around long since I still had 80 miles to ride before the end of the day.
I took my first vacation day from work in a very long time today. I rode from Lancaster, PA to Centralia, PA and then back home for a total of 150 miles. The weather was great, lunch was fantastic (Fabrizio's in Ashland), and the mountains were huge.

PA 225 (48.5 miles long) begins at an interchange w/ US 22/322 in Dauphin, then travels through the communities of Halifax and Elizabethville, where it intersects US 209. From there, it serves the communities of Berrysburg, Pillow, Mandata and Trevorton, before reaching its north end at PA 61 in Shamokin.
