Around half of the Golmud to Lhasa section was laid on barely permanent permafrost with temperatures fluctuation plummeted to -35ºC in winter to 30+ in summer. Four engineering solutions are used to dealt with this problem: a) elevating tracks with foundations sunk deep into the ground, b) building hollow concrete pipes beneath the tracks to keep the rail bed frozen, c) using metal sun shades d) Thermo-siphon pipe filled with ammonia to draw the heat from the bottom of tube.

I stayed in the hospital overnight and next morning raced up to the ward at 7-00 am. The cot was empty. I feared the worst until a nurse told me she had been transferred to another ward. When I got there she was standing in the cot bouncing up and down. "No one told her she's had heart surgery" the sister said to me.
