Owlet with something tickling its throat, maybe a feather from preening or a pellet it was trying to expel.

The local guide does not permit us to use flash, so I had to shoot using only the beam of my spotlight. The bird has a large insect in its beak, which may be some of the first evidence of its diet.

A Spotted Owlet sitting on a branch of tree - well camouflaged with the environment.

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. They are often found near human habitation. The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.

The spotted owlet is a small and stocky bird, barely 21 centimetres (8.3 in) in size. The upperparts are grey-brown, heavily spotted with white. The underparts are white, streaked with brown. The facial disc is pale and the iris is yellow. There is a white neckband and supercilium. Sexes are similar. The flight is deeply undulating. The nominate form is darker than the paler forms such as indica of drier regions.

This species is nocturnal but is sometimes seen in the day. When disturbed from their daytime site, they bob their head and stare at intruders. It can often be located by the small birds that mob it while it is perched in a tree. It hunts a variety of insects and small vertebrates.

The call is a harsh and loud churring and chuckling chirurr-chirurr-chirurr ending with a chirwak-chirwak and they call mainly during early dawn or just after sunset.

8 days later, owlets are bigger but not ready to leave the nest yet.

A special mama owlet made for my aunt, she has extra big wings! I love rainbow thread so much.

The front of this one is wool felt made by me (as are most of my owls), it's some new colors that felted real smooth. The color accents (cheeks and wing tips) are pastels.

The owlet must learn to use its wings just as a child must begin to walk. The down is still visible on its rump. Successful flight will bring the family life it knows to a close as it strives for proficiency and competence.

A Spotted owlet looks into the camera

A somewhat amateur video; mostly I wanted to capture the sounds these two owlet siblings were making. You can also hear the crickets and such... and Chad taking still shots!

One of the young owlets watches from its high perch. Sadly I didn't see them down low today when I was by.

Asian Barred Owlet, Glaucidium cuculoides, 斑頭鵂鶹, Long Valley, Hong Kong, 塱原, 6 Oct 2013

I get to watch the watchers watching the great horned owlets in downtown Penticton. Once a camera is set up it attracts a crowd. From Iphones to Big Glass seen them all in the last 3 weeks.

Without prior knowledge, Owlet Nightjars are harder to find than Tawny Frogmouths. This one at Campbell Park was in a hollow that has been well known for a few years that is always worth checking, particularly in spring.

They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. The species is absent from Sri Lanka, although the birds are found across the Palk Straits, just 30 kilometres away at Rameshwaram. Nests near human habitations may show higher breeding success due to increased availability of rodents for feeding young.[2] The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.
