Worth getting up early to see Tawny owlet this morning

Bubo Virginianus

Mom wasn't there this morning. I did wait around for some time and she didn't return.

Ephrata, Lancaster County, PA

This baby owl was well hidden in a stand of eucalyptus trees, and only recently has been spotted occasionally resting on this more visible branch. Seen in north Walnut Creek, California.

Map location is accurate within 1 mile of the actual location.

If you'd like to see more of my owl images, go to schockenphotography.com. I have many images of owls and their families, eagles and other raptors as well as woodpeckers and their families, hummingbirds, songbirds and mammals and I have a full section on birds in flight which is my specialty.

What do I do after I leave the nest? Seems I should be doing something.

Taken in Cape Coral, Florida.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving any comments or faves, they are very much appreciated.

A few of the many photos taken of the Barred Owlets over the last two months as the nest was alongside a lakeside walking trail.

While doing our usual early morning walk with our dog we would occasionally see an owl(s) and stop briefly for a photo or two.

The photo on the top left was May 30th, the first day the two owlets emerged from the nest and this was the actual tree the nest was in. They had climbed to the top of it and apparently soon fluttered to a nearby tree where the adults were.

The owlets are doing fine and have moved a considerable distance away from the original site.

Mama and her baby were nesting along the Cocalico Creek in the Ephrata, PA city park. Dad was perched in a pine tree a few yards down the creek. Several photographers were there-nice to meet and talk with. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

A couple of photos of these two Great Horned Owlets still in their nest high in a pine. The first photo was taken just as the rising sun hits the nest area and the front owlet hiding the other. In the second photo taken a few minutes later the sunlight was blocked by branches with the second owlet peeking out from behind.

These aren't the sharpest photos as I stood well back and only stayed for about 15 minutes using my 150-600mm lens. I am guessing they have fledged the nest by now.

Thanks so much for the visit!

I decided to drop in and say "Hi" to these cute owlets at Twin Lakes today. The light was good for seeing into the shadows for the other one.

Growing fast !

Nesting GHO's have become an annual event at Brazo Bend, but this year the birds were much lower than in the past few years. It was nice not having the lens pointed straight up. I made it to this nest only a few times, but was happy to get a few keepers and had a great time. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 3/2021.

This beauty had just fledged the nest moments before I arrived the other evening. What a joy to see it explore its new world, with Mom watching closely.

Connecticut...

The one on the right hatched first and left the nest for almost a week, venturing deep into the woods. The younger sibling, however, seemed to suffer from a bit of "failure to launch" syndrome, and ignored its parents' pleas to leave the nest tree. I was surprised to see the elder owlet return to the nest and its younger sib. Maybe with a little encouragement from big sis/bro this apprehensive youngster can find the courage to begin its journey to adulthood.

The owlets generally sleep till evening, but this one was disturbed by some parakeets. both share similar homes - holes / burrows in the trees. So the Parakeets continually made noise, even landed on the edge of the burrow to get the Owlet outside. The poor thing was dozing for much of the time.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

Three spring owlet photos taken May 14, 16 and 18th. They each fledged the same day or shortly after these early morning photos were taken. All the owlets appear fine sitting in tree tops with the now protection of leaf cover. At least one adult nearby and the other bringing in food. The photos were taken at a distance and heavily cropped. Physical distancing from the owls :) and any people nearby of course.

Thank you for viewing.

I was lucky to be ready when this Great-horned Owlet took flight.

Spotted owlet

I took this a few years ago in harsh lighting but just to see a California spotted owl was special. They're very difficult to find and in decline. The family in this area probably dispersed and then the following year was a horrible wildfire that destroyed their habitat. They have not been seen in the area since.

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs!

One of 4 owlet barn owls in a haystack. Had to get up on a ladder to get the shot. Stayed quite a distance away so as not to disturb them...they let you know if you get too close with an eerie

hissing sound!

A pair of Barred Owlets watching from the darkness of the early morning tree canopy. Shot at 1/30 sec with the help of VR and a tree for camera support.
