Just before dusk, and shortly after fledging this owlet made an appearance on our back yard wood pile. We had been observing the nest all spring so it was an exciting day indeed!

If you'd like to see more of my images, go to www.schockenphotography.com. I have many images of eagles and other raptors as well as owls, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, songbirds and mammals and I have a full section on birds in flight which is my specialty.
They are starting to look a little more grown up and getting more active in the trees practicing their flight skills.
Two great horned owlets sitting high in a tree blending into their surroundings surrounded by spanish moss on an overcast morning. I took this shot from a distance and cropped it to not disturb them. not the best light.
One of the rarer backyard visitors, these birds are often found singly, in pairs or small groups. There are two subspecies, the nominate form is found in the plains of India and Sri Lanka while malabaricum of the Western Ghats is shorter tailed and shows more brown on the head. It has been suggested that this may warrant full species status. Their diet consists of insects, small birds, reptiles, and rodents.

We all know that moment, when you have been trying to get the right perch, the right background, the right look, the right light. And then for a few seconds it looks like it has come together. This was one of those times! I'm sure people have taken much better Little Owlet shots, but for me I was very very happy.

Wikipedia: The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. They are often found near human habitation. The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.
