Barred Owlet after fledging climbed up trunk of tree, stopping at this branch to lie down and rest.

Looks as if the Owlet is expecting rain!

Many thanks to everyone that views and comments on my images - very much appreciated.

Another sad story with the owls in Pinellas County, Florida. Last year, all three owlets perished, two from eating poisoned rats and one from bee stings. This year, mom and dad also produced three owlets, Huey, Dewey and Louie. The oldest, Huey, died a week ago from ingestion of a rat poisoned with an anticoagulant rodenticide. A few days later mom also died. Dad is looking after Dewey and Louie and so far, so good. But we've got to get rid of these rodenticides and find safer alternatives for the owls and other raptors not to mention pets and young children. Please, do not use rodenticides that cause secondary poisonings to wildlife.

Pictured here is Louie. He's around 9 weeks old now. Dewey is a week older and is likely a female as she is larger than Louie. Huey was likely also a female.

The great horned owls are back and hooting every night so if we're lucky maybe another one of these little guys will drop into the yard. The parents continue to feed them for a couple weeks as they hop around and learn to get by outside of the nest. I think I was more intimidated by the parent sitting on a branch above me than this little one was of me and my camera.

This Owlet has just branched out from the nest

The reason the GGOs have been so active lately. My first time seeing juveniles though I’ve heard them shrieking for food deep in the woods before. 2 came out into the open, the 3rd stayed hidden.

One of two Barred Owl owlets at Beacon Hill Park, BC.

It was wonderful to observe them. I had no idea how animated and curious they would be. At this point, I gave up with my rickety tripod, and shot hand held.

If you'd like to see more of my owl images, go to schockenphotography.com. I have many images of owls and their families, eagles and other raptors as well as woodpeckers and their families, hummingbirds, songbirds and mammals and I have a full section on birds in flight which is my specialty.

Taken at Neil Neville's excellent hide in South Bucks.

I missed out on the owlets last year so it was great to catch up with them this time. These owls are completely wild but Neil has done all the hard work by putting in countless hours of work - helping to make these encounters possible.

Also good to meet up with Flickr contact Ken Law on what turned out to be a top evening.

You can see the remains of a bird in the nest. These two are thriving and a third owlet is in the close vicinity of the nest maybe after being pushed out of the already crowded nest but is still alive after 10 days which would suggest the parents are still bringing him food.

A very small owl which lacks ear-tuffs and feeds mainly on insects. Two dark spots surrounded by white feathers give the impression of eyes on the back of the head. One of the "eyes" can be clearly seen in this photo.

Thanks for the visits, faves and comments its greatly appreciated.

One of two owlets in the nest earlier this spring. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 3/2022

A clutch of 9 burrowing owlets here, from Spring of 2017, parent off-camera to the side. I haven't seen a clutch so large since in this area. In fact, when I went looking for adults lately, I couldn't find a one. But I saw SO many hawks hanging out - I thought the poor owls don't stand a chance. I never saw so many hawks - red-tailed and even ferruginous, which I'd never seen in that area. I hope the title isn't true and that I'll be able to enjoy my owls again, but regardless, I have memories and a couple thousand images left...

Found these two young GHO owlets looking sad with the snowy rainy weather we are getting. Edmonton River Valley

This is the last day that any pictures of these owlets will be taken. You're not supposed to post on the internet any active nesting sites. This site was posted on ebird with the exact location of the nest. Needless to say more and more people kept showing up and not following the rules. At first Fish and Game just blocked off under the tree. You could still get pictures. Apparently something happened that evening and they closed down the whole area. I'm mad because you don't get this opportunity in your back yard all the time. And again, the few ruin it for everyone. I know that ultimately the safety of the family is what matters. Have a great day.

Thanks so much for the visit!

a great horned owlet at dusk, i was so happy to get a shot like this. I've been only twice to California in 2020, hope to be there more often in 2021! Miss Point Reyes a lot!!! To all my flickr friends and followers, thanks so much for your views, likes and comments! Stay safe and all the best for 2021! Cheers...

The owlet christened Acorn by Pete Walkden on his current little owl sessions. Sadly I turned out to be a rubbish at working out which way he was going to fly/run. So I have had to console myself with some nice stationary shots.

A strong flyer who is learning to hunt, this Great Horned owlet was seen in the evening in the North Walnut Creek area.

The map location is within 1 mile of the actual location.

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings.

While on an early morning walk along a hiking trail I slowly passed by a Barred Owl nest site (they had chosen a nesting tree inches from the trail) when suddenly this owlet that had been moving along a limb high in the tree fell and fluttered softly to the ground. This happening only a few feet from where I was standing. As I quickly stepped back the owlet looked a little surprised and shook itself before making its way a couple of feet back to the base of the tree. Within minutes it climbed up and to the top of the tree, all of this happening with one adult and three other owlets closely watching.

Of course a relief to see the owlet successfully manage this fall and continue my walk.

This was taken a few weeks ago and recent reports are all four owlets are doing great.
