Trip: Calgary to Missoula

Iconic Thompson River crossing, the Overlander Bridge, Kamloops, BC.

Great Overland Station in Topeka, Kansas began as a Union Pacific railroad passenger station on January 27, 1927. Along the way, it survived floods, was remodeled for railroad offices, abandoned in 1988, and damaged by fire in 1992. Railroad Heritage, Inc. leased the building from the Union Pacific Railroad to prevent the building's demolition.

Union Pacific Corporation donated the station to Topeka Railroad Days, Inc. 6 years later, and the Great Overland Station Project Team was established to direct efforts to preserve the station and transform it into a railroad heritage museum. In June 2004, The Great Overland Station opened its doors.

The Great Overland Station is quite beautiful, and this is a spectacular special event space, but as of the beginning of 2006, Great Overland Station is still building toward its potential. When I visited the museum in 2006, there wasn't enough to make the Station a destination for anyone but serious train buffs. Other then the structure itself, the biggest attraction is the 100 or so freight trains that pass the building daily. Perhaps more can be done with Topeka's connection to the Harvey House restaurant chain.

Harvey House Luncheons and tours of the Great Overland Station are available to groups with advance reservations.

Overland a quota 2900 m.

Summer vacation adventure of 2020. From East Finland to Lapland to Arctic Ocean and back

Sandy and rocky beaches are interrupted by steep headlands every mile or so. Some require fixed ropes to navigate safely.

It's the inside of our overland truck. Oddly, there's no one inside but me. Notice the layout. It's very conducive to community. It's also very conducive to storage. The lockers are located underneath the seats and go down a good 3 feet. I have a 32" duffel that fits in the locker standing up. I share a locker with Tyler, another tourist who hails from Canada. For the storage of our day gear there is a shelf above the seats with netting to keep the day stuff from falling on your head and killing you. The windows are plastic and role up and down with a little help from a few of the passengers. In the front of the area you see is "The Beach", a flat surface with a window that has the area above it cut out so that people can get on their knees and stick their heads out above the top of the truck to look forward to see what's going on. It's called the The Beach because you can get a good sunburn or tan by sitting on The Beach for a whole sunny day with the canvas removed that covers The Beach. The whole setup is designed for maximum community and maximum viewing so that the occupants can role down the road and wave to all the thousands of children that wave at us.
