We'd made it over the toughest part of the West Highland Way. Which to be honest, wasn't that tough and slightly overhyped. However we still had quite a way to go and would now be exposed to the sun a lot more.
I used a darker background, then changed the color setting and softened the edges... and the result was absolutely stunning. (I do not say this to overhype my photo skills; I really was stunned by the finished product.)
Or is that Rhumba?
Roll up, Roll up, get your party hats here. Born to handjive, baby. You have been warned.!
It's two weeks of the greatest show on earth, transmitted not-quite-live to all four corners of the globe.
Iiiiiiiiiiiit's SNODFEST '07 !!!!!!!!
This is just a teaser of what's to come. I've got some other stuff I want to post first. It'sll give you a chance to read the tags, and feel free to add anything you'd like to see.
"My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita.” - Ernest Hemingway.
I'd expected Floridita to have gone the way of Hemingway's other favorite haunt, La Bodeguita del Medio (which he mentions above.) That other joint, cramped, overpriced and overhyped, is nowhere worth visiting. But the truth is I never even liked daiquiris all that much until I came here! Maybe the plush, air conditioned bar - a welcome respite from the oppressive heat outside - had something to do with why I liked the place, but I still can't get those tangy, frosty things out of my mind. They made me feel sorry for my drinking buddies up north who haven't had the priviledge of imbibing in these morsels of sunshine.
One of my most overhyped titles ever, but against the dark background they did remind me of a fireworks display. At the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, California.
Lighting info: The background was not good behind these flowers so I used a camera setting that let it go very dark. All of the light on the flowers came from a YN560 in an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox in front and camera left. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
Other pictures that I've taken, over the years, of succulents are in my Cactus and Succulents set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157633383093236/

Looking back, one of my proudest moments from 2022 has to be when I lost out on a speaking gig because I advised the client - a major global Swiss firm - that I couldn't quite tell the storyline they wanted to hear. They were looking for a keynote that outlined the huge, future opportunities in the world of cryptocurrencies - but I demurred because I didn't think their expectations were realistic. The lead organizer of the event seemed to be caught up in the crazy world of the hype of crypto; I wasn't and told him so. I suggested I could give a realistic overview of what was really going on, including the possibility of a crash and collapse.
I didn't get the gig and lost out on a substantial fee, but in retrospect, managed to keep my integrity and dignity intact!
Going into 2023, we've managed to turn off the engine of technology overhype for a time, and that is a good thing! The result is that I believe many organizations will be focusing much more of their strategic thinking time on the real trends that matter, and not chasing the 'shiny objects' of unrealistic trends that might never have an impact. That's why trend #22 of my "23 Trends for 2023" series is Opportunity, Not Fads. It comes in the wake of trend #1, Techno-skepticism.
With the ongoing implosion of the world of crypto and other trends during the last year, I can look back and point to the stories I told on stage where skeptical caution was well-warranted.
I've been in this weird space before - of being the contrarian in the face of relentless hype. Back in 1999, I spent a fair bit of tie in the media speaking about the ridiculous levels of hype around dot.com companies. I took a fair bit of abuse at the time for doing so but was proven right. After all, the dot.com world imploded in a cascade of failed companies with busted strategies.
The words of Warren Buffett nail the issue of hype, trends, and FOMO (fear of missing out) with his observation that the five most dangerous words in business are "everybody else is doing it". He's also made this brilliant observation: "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." No wonder he is the most impressive investment guru of all time - because he has quite successfully avoided fads and hype.
Contrast him with Kevin O'Leary, who ended up with a $15 million payday for hawking the now-failed crypto exchange FTX and his praise for the new icon of overhype, Sam Bankman-Fried,
“It was a new gold rush,” Mr. O’Leary recalled, in an interview. “Everyone wanted in.”
Everyone wanted in. No truer words were ever said by the idiots who rush in with the other idiots who are rushing in. My idea has always been that as soon as people start talking about a gold rush, you should run away - very quickly!
---
And so the predictable things happened. In a recent podcast with psychologist Steven Pinker, respected 98-year-old investor Charlie Munger says the biggest mistakes he has made in his long career were born out of wishful thinking.
Wishful thinking is the bias we succumb to when we are unable to separate what we want to be true from what actually is true and what is rational according to the evidence we have in front of us. At its core, wishful thinking is an inability to deal with reality as it is and an unwillingness to update our beliefs when new evidence emerges.
From crypto to renewables, don’t buy into the hype
4 November 2022, The Australian
--
Crowd psychology is a dangerous thing. Wishful thinking is not a strategy.
Back to my potential Swiss client. At the time of our conversation last spring, it became evident that the lead organizer was looking for something that tied into all the crazy hype of the time In essence, a keynote that would validate his idea that crypto, Web 3.0, NFTs, the metaverse, and other overhyped concepts were the next big thing - and that this glorious world of huge opportunity was emerging. In our exploratory conference call, I gave my balanced overview, based on my keynote topic outline that I had put together quite some time before. My key point? I could help them understand this complex new world - but with a talk that outlined the good, the bad, and the ugly rolled together Realism, not hype. Here's my keynote topic outline, which can still be found on my site:
---
Deciphering The Disruption: Deconstructing the Metaverse, Blockchain & Crypto, NFT’s, Web 3 and More – A Reality Check for Humans!”
In as little as ten years, the very concept of money might have been forever changed by crypto-currency and blockchain technology – and then again, it might not. And the fact is, the same might be true of all the trends that now dominate our new vocabulary – from the metaverse to NFT’s, Web3 to Bitcoin. What’s real, and what’s not? Are we about to unleash a wave of innovation that parallels and exceeds the impact of the arrival of the Internet economy? Or are we simply being held hostage to the accelerated hype machine of Silicon Valley and venture capitalists, eager to cash in on an accelerated world of faster FOMO – “fear of missing out?”
--
He didn't want the ugly. He wanted the glory! I was advised a few days later that 'they decided to go in a different direction.' And so my keynote that promised a balanced view of the future was, let's say, rejected.
Fast forward to today, as we go through the cold winter of another tech-overhype collapse. No one is talking much more about the metaverse, blockchain, crypto, NFTs, and Web3 .... the hype machine has collapsed as the cold harsh reality of reality settles in. Hype is not a trend. It's a fad. Trend #1 of this series has been the emerging world of 'Technosketpcism' - and it is well warranted.
I've long said that we should excel at seizing opportunities, not fads!
That's why I've been emphasizing that organizations that are focused on real strategy, not fads, are working hard at a strategic level to deal with what they really need to concentrate on, and that will be the big trend for 2023. Things like managing economic volatility, supply chain issues, staffing challenges, and other issues. They've got bigger concerns to worry about than the price of Bitcoin, virtual avatars, or weird monkey art.
In other words, tapping into future opportunities while managing the challenges that surround them!
And that's why this is trend #22 of my 2023 trends series!

Ambition is the fuel of progress—the stuff that pushes wide-eyed scientists and engineers to pull endless all-nighters in the lab, that motivates inventors and entrepreneurs to bounce back after each defeat. But does having too much of this special sauce lead to self-delusion? At what point does one’s fervent belief in the potential of a new technology or therapy translate into overhype? We sit down with Guardant Health CEO Helmy Eltoukhy to talk about the need for internal reality checks—and ask a question that would be unthinkable in Silicon Valley: Are we rushing our way to failure?

Well whoopdie-motherfucking-doo: this is the Lioness with one of her insanely overhyped new cubs. These cubs are the new Jesus'-Face-In-Random-Inanimate-Object, which is a huge deal in the South (and if you're a mouth-breathing fucktard, which usually goes hand-in-hand with the whole South thing).
This is my favourite 21st century architecture, no tally ho, no shitty curve and not an overhyped glassbox. Designed by Andra Martin who, decide to design against all norm of a "must be a glassbox". 9000 metre square, 19 floors, completed 2015.

Clinton Clarence Hartung (b. August 10, 1922 – d. July 8, 2010 at age 87) was a right-handed pitcher and right fielder in MLB who played with the New York Giants from 1947 to 1952. His name has become associated with promising rookies who have undistinguished careers. His pro nicknames were "The Hondo Hurricane" and "Floppy."
After 1950, he was relieved of his duties as a pitcher and was switched to the outfield—a very rare position shift in the major leagues. Hartung was the 11th player in history whose first homer in the majors was as a pitcher to later hit a home run as a position player; the previous player to do so was Babe Ruth, but the next was not until Rick Ankiel repeated the feat in the 2000s. He was at least present, though passively, as the pinch runner at third base in the 1951 play known as the Shot Heard 'Round the World.
A 1983 Texas Monthly (magazine) article commented on his career.
The baseball statistical reference by Bill James commemorates Hartung with its "Clint Hartung Award", for the most overhyped rookie of each decade (and honors him with one for the 1940s), and baseball-themed musician Terry Cashman wrote a song called "The Hondo Hurricane".

The Edsel was an automobile marque that was planned, developed, and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company for model years 1958–1960. With the Edsel, Ford had expected to make significant inroads into the market share of both General Motors and Chrysler and close the gap between itself and GM in the domestic American automotive market. Ford invested heavily in a yearlong teaser campaign leading consumers to believe that the Edsel was the car of the future – an expectation it failed to meet. After it was unveiled to the public, it was considered to be unattractive, overpriced, and overhyped. The Edsel never gained popularity with contemporary American car buyers and sold poorly. The Ford Motor Company lost $250 million on the Edsel's development, manufacturing, and marketing.

Overhyped unnecessarily on its recent debut due to it being a rather simplistic replica of the dramatic McLaren Solus GT with no particular redeeming features, it returns for 2024 Case C. I'm continuing my mission to be more select with what Hot Wheels I buy going forward and trying to keep duplicates to a minimum so you may be wondering why I've bought this when i'm not a particular fan of this Hot Wheels casting.
For me its simply because of the interesting vehicle choice and as far as i'm aware no other toy manufacturer makes a low price 1/64 McLaren Solus GT.
Found recently at The Entertainer.

This is a model I built waaaay back, almost as long ago when dinosaurs really did walk the Earth. I modified a kit extensively, purportedly a representation of the much overhyped Velociraptor, into something a little more paleontologically accurate. Feel free to disagree with my interpretation of a Utahraptor... and I dare you to prove me wrong!

Are you the kind of person that thought Tetris was overhyped and needed more style? Well I present to you Hatris. Published in arcades and for the NES and Game Boy in 1990. It's the hat matching game that never caught on from the creator of Tetris , Alexey Pazhitnov. It's one of three relatively unknown games in the "tris" series.

Elaboration on my Marine loadout. Pistol on the right inspired by Col. Quaritch's revolver from the movie Avatar (which was WAY overhyped, but I still loved it).
I was tagged by a few people so I think I could say ten things about myself at the very least.
1. As pertaining to the photograph above; That is not my real hair or beard.
2. I think the ocean and beaches are vastly overhyped and overrated as an attraction. Aside from the pretty women one might see at the beach, I would choose to visit a bad little museum over a world class beach any day.
3. I once nearly caused a small nuclear accident.
4. I have a Degree in Architectural Engineering but haven't used it in eons.
5. I have three older brothers. The eldest is a computer analyst. The next is a neurosurgeon and the other sells potato chips.
6. When I was little I once held out my hand and a bird pooped in it from the air.
7. Music is my constant companion and I have quite the large and varied collection: Rock, Jazz (Swing, Bebop, Smooth, Ragtime, etc.), Reggae (Roots and Dancehall), Classical, Blues, R&B, Soul. My favorites have always been the slow, sad and downtempo ballads.
8. I used to be very religious. No longer so.
9. I missed three days of school ever. I had an ear infection in 2nd grade. My Grandfather died when I was in 6th grade and I was too hung over to go to school one day in High School (hehe).
10. I do not like to eat fish although the crestaceans are quite acceptable.
Got around to trying some nasty cheap trashy game by Disney that came
free with my xbox. Never bothered because I assumed it'd be crap and
man did it not disappoint!
Pure is an ATV racing game, with an emphasis on showy physics defying
tricks and racing as an afterthought. It allows really nice custom
design of your ATV but that's about all this game has going for it.
Psycophantic raving over seppo riders mixed with product placement and
advertising up the whazoo it seems more of an attempt to mainstreamify
an otherwise niche sport by overhyped sales pitch voice overs.
Did I mention psychophancy? It even has a trust fund kid who lives off
daddies rock career and tinkers with ATV's, how the shamwow voiceover
hypes him up is beyond me, but man is this game rubbish.
Packed with oversteer and tracks that defy logic let alone gravity,
the physics of this game is comparable to an ice race track on the
moon. By that I mean traction is inconsequential to the game, you're
always in over or understeer at all times and common race technique is
ignored, and the gravity in the world physics is depleted in an
attempt to let you pull 'sick tricks' instead of race.
I'd give this game one bash prompt out of five.

This is my favourite 21st century architecture, no tally ho, no shitty curve and not an overhyped glassbox. Designed by Andra Martin who, decide to design against all norm of a "must be a glassbox". 9000 metre square, 19 floors, completed 2015.

IS HUBRIS HURTING SCIENCE?

Home of the famous Sacher Torte (cake). I bought a small one, smaller than the one visible here, for about 18eu. It is a *extremely* rich and heavy chocolate cake.
I might get screamed at, but i didnt particularly like it, or rather thought it is overhyped.
Here is our annual list of technological advances that we believe will make a real difference in solving important problems. How do we pick? We avoid the one-off tricks, the overhyped new gadgets. Instead we look for those breakthroughs that will truly change how we live and work.
Unhackable internet
Hyper-personalized medicine
Digital money
Anti-aging drugs
AI-discovered molecules
Satellite mega-constellations
Quantum supremacy
Tiny AI

Our other pizza at Una Pizza Napoletana on Saturday:
Margherita
San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, extra-virgin olive oil,
fresh basil, sea salt. (tomato sauce)
This one had good flavor, but it also had too much moisture in the middle. The cheese slid to one side. It was the first pizza in the oven that night, though, so it's entirely possible that the fire wasn't quite where it needed to be yet.
We decided that the place is probably a little overhyped, but it might be worth a return visit sometime.
What are your picks for best music of '09? Thoughts on my list?

The Whitest Boy Alive Rules (Bubbles)
Kings of Convenience’s Erlend Øye’s vocals feature prominently in the German-based group noted for the short and danceable songs. Catchy Synthesizers and a Rhodes piano feature prominently. My neice Fiona wiped the floor with me after challenging me to a dance-off to the infectious track “Intentions”.

Do Make Say Think The Other Truths
Rumoured to be the Toronto post-rock band’s final release, it would be a hell of a swan song, as the four sprawling instrumental tracks seem a fitting summation of the work by one of the genre’s finest torchbearers.

Lee Fields and the Expressions My World
Pure soul, and plenty of it, from Truth & Soul’s living legend, the man once know as the “little J.B.”. James Brown might be dead but funky Lee Fields proves once again that he is very much alive.

Freelance Whales Weathervane
Another Brooklyn band puts out another sublime album of indie-rock. Recorded with just about any instruments hanging around the music room floor, the songs seem effortless, as if people just fart great music in NYC. Avid street performers, this is another example of the immeasurable good that can come when art is allowed to live and breathe in the streets of the city.

Phoenix Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus
French pop-rock sensations hit the North American mainstream in 2009 after years of indie success overseas. Over-marketed, yes, but not overhyped, Phoenix has done it all with this auditory hook-fest.

Fanfarlo Reservoir
London’s Fanfarlo is Beirut’s adventurous cousin visiting from Europe. Well layered and multi-instrumental (think Sufjan) and wildly raucous in their own driving way (think Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire), Reservoir is not only among the year’s best, but also underrated, albums.

Patrick Watson Wooden Arms
Quebec’s Watson was understandably shortlisted for a Polaris award for this, his third and fullest effort to date. As lush vocals roll over chamber pop and zany-cabaret, Watson navigates similar waters as Andrew Bird and fellow-Montrealer Rufus Wainwright.

The 2010 sign where the ball drops. As a New Yorker I have never been to Times Square on New Year's Eve. We moved here when I was a teenager and at the time Times Square was still seedy. Now it's far from fun. Still I was thinking of maybe going this time after reading some people's experience written online. The streets were certainly crowded the night of December 30th and again on the day of. There are so many tourists right now in New York and a lot of them come from far away just to be here for this. I am still part of the group that thinks that it is overrated and overhyped and maybe not worth it, but I live here so maybe I take it for granted. I ended up not going. This was not the year for me to finally go. I had been walking all over for the past two days and was looking forward to a boring night at home. Besides it was cold with snow and rain(snain) and the area I wanted to be in was closed early and I didn''t feel like waiting for ten hours without restroom facilities. The rule is if you leave your spot you can't come back. OMG listen to me. Does cheese come with that whine? It just wasn't the right time. maybe next year.
I would've been the last person to think I'd ever own a pair of Crocks. They represented everything wrong with overhyped, herd mentality trends to me.
Well imagine my suprise when I opened up these beauties on Christmas (I like to think of them as he illegitimate love child of Crocks Crocs and Uggs, due to the fur lining).
I am hesitant to admit it, but these ugly shoes are really, really comfortable.
With the overrated and overhyped swine flu/mexican flu/H1N1/ohlawdwegonnadie, our Security manager in the office has secured availability of a bunch of these masks to be worn by whomever feels like being a bit of clown, as I do :P
Decided it would be a nice, timely, subject to be photographed as well!

One of the most popular things to do in Hanoi is attending a show at the water puppet theater. The puppets, made of wood, dance on the water following traditional Vietnamese music. The traditional water puppets are world famous.
(Btw, my friend Bee is gonna kill me for mentioning this overhyped tourist attraction lol.)
Overhyped web description
Steep Hill in Lincoln has an average gradient of 16.12°, making it one of the steepest streets in England. This translates to a 14% gradient, with the steepest sections reaching up to 20%. The hill's challenging ascent is part of its charm, attracting visitors who enjoy its historic atmosphere and independent shops along the way.
20% translates to 1 in 5 old money.
Steep Hill connects Lincoln Uphill to the town centre and retail centre which are on the level plain. It was formerly known as Ermine Street and is currently being maintained by the Lincolnshire County Council. It was built by the Romans to connect the different growing parts of Lincoln.
Not sure what's the deal with me and this Fate/Grand Order character. I am not a fan of this franchise at all. In fact, I rather dislike it. I tried the game out for a few months many years ago, and quit - it just wasn't for me. And it was (and still is?) so overhyped it bombarded me in all directions. It reminds me of how I feel about Harry Potter *rolls eyes*. Ahem - anyway! Despite those, likely unpopular, sentiments - I do really admire this character's design. He's super pretty, and I love the incorporation of pink and white. He translates beautifully to nendoroid form, and I remember staring at his pictures on my facebook feeds two years ago, trying extremely hard to scrounge up reasons to purchase him. I didn't in the end, and was filled with immense regret that I instantly bought him the moment I realised he was still available online 18 months later. I'm just thrilled he's a part of my nendo collection ^^

It didn't seem that super. Maybe it was overhyped.
Either way, this is my best photo of Supermoon on Saturday 19th March 2011.
Recently I took a trip to the US, and per usual, I look for unloved toys to adopt along the way.. but generally I fail miserably because of the exchange rate. This time, on the way back to Canada, I passed through Buffalo, and along the way I picked up a straggler - the Union Creative HDGE Technical Statue No. 6 - Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost In The Shell S.A.C.
The character needs no introduction. She's not even the first one of this character that has graced my page. Having said all that, this statue is considered by most to be the one that truly captures the character design from this particular series of the show It's hard to disagree when artists generally took some artistic liberties when they worked on other statues, in particular the face followed by her curves, with this one adhering much closer to the source material.
I imagine this is why the aftermarket price on this statue is absurdly high, especially if you get the versions with the translucent legs.
Statue comes with the main statue and the base, a simple triangular base. Her pistol comes permanently attached
Now, because the aftermarket price is absurd, and I'm cheap, I ended up rescuing this one despite it not being in the best shape. Of course, i didn't pay anywhere close to current market prices.
The various photos show off not only the overall beautiful sculpt which also includes some nice detailing on the jacket and musculature, but also, the battle damage this poor statue endured, which included scuffs and general damage. Some of it, to my surprise, kind of cleaned off but took off some of the base paint, which is unfortunate but at least it's relatively the same colour. But there's no coming back from broken bits.
At least the face itself survived in tact.
So this statue retailed for about 11,000 Yen back in 2018 or so, and is somewhere between 1/6 and 1/7 in scale. So effectively modern pricing, which isn't exactly outrageous. I just expected that for all the price that it would have at least Bishoujo level of finishes. As mentioned, the overall sculpt isn't bad at all. But there are some some rough finishes in terms of sanding, most notable on her exposed shoulder and the right thigh. Fit is acceptable but I've definitely seen better Some people have pointed out the shading on the skin is a bit odd looking, but it's not as odd as having the exposed back being a different skin tone. The seam on the hair isn't particularly well hidden (or at all) but at least the colouring there is right. Paint work is competent, about what I'd expect from something in this price point.
So overall, this statue pretty much is what I'd expect from this price point, given the license and all that. But its certainly not flawless, and it's times like that I'm glad that I just opted for a damaged one. If I had dropped the current asking price of like $300 USD on this piece, I'd be pissed, even if was pristine.
I guess it's safe to say that even anime statue collectors can get sucked up into the hype.
