This historic buiding from around 1610 at the town's grain market served as an inn - "Englischer Hof" - and accomodated Heinrich Heine during his Harz journey in 1824.
The Harz is the highest mountain range in northern Germany and its rugged terrain extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The name Harz derives from the Middle High German word Hardt or Hart (mountain forest), Latinized as Hercynia. The legendary Brocken is the highest summit in the Harz with a height of 1,141.1 metres (3,744 ft) above sea level.
We spent a wonderful winter day amongst the firs and spruces, discovered frozen ponds and enjoyed the fresh mountain air...
Der Harz, bis ins Mittelalter Hart (‚Bergwald‘) genannt, ist ein Mittelgebirge in Deutschland. Er stellt das höchste Gebirge Norddeutschlands dar und liegt am Schnittpunkt von Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen. Anteil am Harz haben im Westen die Landkreise Goslar und Osterode am Harz, im Norden und Osten die Landkreise Harz und Mansfeld-Südharz und im Süden der Landkreis Nordhausen. Der Brocken ist mit 1141,1 m ü. NN der höchste Berg des Harzes.
Wir verbrachten dort heute einen wundervollen Wintertag inmitten all der Tannen und Fichten, entdeckten zugefrorene Teiche und genossen die frische Bergluft...

You could think this is in Europe around 1950, but no: it is an historical train (Brockenbahn) in the Harz mountains / Germany in 2005. It was very cold and stormy and we fought our way through the heavy snow to the Brocken. It was no option to go by train, hard as we are :-) And by the way, I used my first digital camera for this, my Minolta Dimage F100. That were rough times compared to my DSLR today, but at that time I didn't notice that it was so slow and it was okay
